      Hi Jan! They are fantastic dogs. We are used to raising high energy dogs as we’ve always had Dalmatians. These Mals are prob the best breed we’ve ever owned. We’re moving to Alaska in just over a month where they will have 15 acres & a pond for their back yard! Looking fwd to life with the new pups (we went back & bought his brother also). ♥️♥️

      I was thinking oh boy, do they know what they got into. Alaska, he's going to freeze his missing balls off. Belgian Tervuren for Alaska maybe. Smart high energy dogs are great for the right owners, really rewarding compared to your average house dog. Ferrari vs Honda Civic.

    Your Puppy shows very promising. I had a similar dog in the Special Forces. I trained him with my own System. 80 Commands with voice and signs in 4 Languages and a secret Language. We got shot, stabbed, kicked and all. We did it all. There is no greater Bond and joy as a dog who has a real reason to exist and has an important role to play. No deeper Love and Friendship as well. Your Dog may be such an Asset in Alaska, for fun but security reasons too.

    Congratulations on the new Mal baby! Please remember that mental stimulation is almost more important than physical exercise. Dogs aren't truly protective naturally, it's actually reactivity. These dogs can be amazing protectors with the proper training. I hope you have lots of fun raising your new baby! They're honestly my favorite breed hands down. Maybe I'll get to see you guys eventually as i also have 2 Malinois's and live in Alaska!

    Seeing this makes me miss my Belgian... I got her as an outdoor dog, but the first night she scratched at the backdoor because she was cold and lonely. The next today, i put a dog door on a brand new insulated screen door. And she could come and go at will... She lived a highly active and long life. That was over 30 years ago, and today, I have a German Shepard simply because Belgians are so active and high energy. An example is while my Shepard will play ball for 30 minutes. My Belgian would never stop playing. So much to the point she always had a ball in her mouth. And now, at my age, I wouldn't be able to keep up with her... A truly remarkable and wonderful animal. I have been a dog lover all of my life and had a lot of different types. All dogs are great, and their is no such thing as a bad dog. Just bad owners. Dogs are truly mankind's best friend.

    I love these dogs I have had two both have passed....best dog ever and super loyal to family. You must train them as they need jobs to do and make sure they know commands in order to control them as they are super smart, and they need major exercise to keep them out of trouble. Do not leave anything on the floor you do want the puppy to chew up I used to do long walks, and major play catch and ball. The longer they are with their mom healthier the dog, most dogs are taken away from their mom too early. Great he loves the water not all dogs do.

    I had a Dutch Shepherd that was four months old too when I first got him. I remember my first reaction when I picked him up, and it was like yours. I expected a puppy but got a DOG! Being a Dutchy, he was dark-brindle, almost black and his whole demeanor was intimidating, to say the least. At four months! He turned into a massive animal and the most exciting dog I've ever encountered. Dutch Shepherds and Malinois aren't the "same", but both have that aura of "don't mess with me" and my Dutchy was scarily intelligent. He died at nearly 16 and I've never had another dog like him. I did consider a Malinois, hoping he might be a little less intense, but ended up with two Staffordshire Bull Terriers in a row. Can't say I ever regretted that. Staffies are a lot of dog in a small(er) package!

      @primalcritters 2 года назад +1

      @@user-cd5up9ph3y same here. As a matter of fact, most of the contracted canines police and military are X malinois X herders. The Dutch don't really admit it, they keep their secrets to themselves, but people in the know know that the working dogs for Patrol specifically are a combination of dutch, belgian, and working line German shepherd. Sometimes they will even outcross with apbt and other Mastiff breeds. Then they will breed back. Fawn is dominant so the dog can look like a Malinois, unless breeding Sable to sable, but they will have more muscle tone, larger heads and larger chest cavities, and a little more stability not as nervy. That's from the working line German shepherd. But they still retain the agility of the Dutch or Mal. Recent stud dog in the Netherlands was outcross to a Presa Canario and then they will breed back. Them people think they'll have a purebred Malinois one day when they come to the states with puppies and it's far from it. Doesn't mean they're mutts, they're very selectively bred working dogs primarily from the shepherd breeds and sometimes extra. For SAR yes, they can use purebreds because they don't need the added size and seriousness that they need for Patrol. Detection is a tossip it can be anything between a purebred working line German shepherd, malinois, or the X herders like I just described. I like them because purebred Malinois are wonderful but they're just a little bit too nervy hyper and too fine boned for my taste, too narrow of muzzles. I think the working line German Shepherd brings great stability, off switch, size and incredible looks. No show lines though! I just wish they would be more specific because lots of people think that the Malinois the only dog used and it's really a Shepherd mix that is used

    • @HomeFreeAlaska
      @HomeFreeAlaska  2 года назад

      Actually these are no different than the Dalmatians we’ve owned. In fact, this breed is better. Way more focused. They have a job and that’s to be our family pet. It’s completely inaccurate to think these dogs can only be used for working dogs. They’re a great family pet. As long as they’re given the attention they need & plenty of exercise, they’re wonderful.

I have searched and searched and can't seemed to find the video that would clear that up for me. Will you please just fill me in so I can stop searching. I love the way the two dogs interact. Gunner was BIG at 4 months. Mals can vary a lot in size and coloration. They can be rangy or stocky. Gunner is the classic rangy-framed Mal. One thing you may want to get your Mals is a classic or bone-shaped Kong dog toy. They are basically indestructible, even for the most aggressive chewers. Police use them for their K9s (especially Mals) because most K9s work for their reward toy(s). If a dog has a strong "play drive" he will be a good working/protection dog and easily trained. My Mal also liked the hard plastic Nylabones. Once he chewed the ends off, of course, I would discard them, but they last a long time.Good for keeping teeth clean.

    • @primalcritters
      @primalcritters 2 года назад

      Remember that the reason why Mals range so much in size is because a lot of the ones you're seeing that are big, more muscled are outcrossed with Dutch Shepherd and working line German Shepherd. Sometimes they're even outcrossed with American Pitbull Terrier and even other Mastiff breeds. The Dutch don't talk about.. almost all of the contracted Patrol canines come from Holland or Eastern europe. They regularly outcross with working line German Shepherd and then breed back to add a little bit more stability, seriousness, bigger heads, size but retain the agility. Recent stud dog and home was out crossed with a Presa Canario and then they will breed back. You can easily see it in a lot of the dogs by looking at the head and then the body type. Bigger chest cavities, wider heads, don't have the narrow snipey muzzles of the classic Malinois.. also, the Dutch Shepherd when it almost went extinct utilized both Malinois and working German Shepherds to bring the breed back. Anyways, my point is simply that the actual contracted canines are not FCI dogs. Very few of them are. Most of them are X herders or X Malinois for a reason as purebred Malinois bred to Malinois can create dogs that are a little too nervy and too fine boned. For patrol they need a little more muscle.. fun is dominant unless you're breeding stable to sable so they can look like a Malinois but basically a Malinois that's much bigger and has a much nicer head

I have a weakness for orphaned fur babies of all kinds. Needless to say I brought her home. I didn't know at the time what breed she was. She's about 5 months old now. She is about a year; I house trained her (tough work), and she is a handful. I adopted her for my other 8 year old Chug and the two play with each other everyday.
