Purchased it for all the same reasons that you mentioned! I wanted a 4 cilinder, shaft drive adventure bike with around 130hp. Purchased the DCT new in 2016 with all standard Honda options and like it better than all the K-series that I’ve owned (I don’t like R-series because of these huge cilinders sticking out the sides). What really sold me is the massive torque of this beast. Many many bikes cannot keep up with you until about 180kph...🤣 Love the DCT and love the smooth v4. Definitely underrated as an adventure tourer. Don’t want any other bike anymore and hope to keep this machine going for many years to come... The only thing I would like to change on it is the seat and get a bit more comfort...
Yes the seat is a little firm.... I'll be looking for a gel or air seat... The engine to me is perfect... All the character of a V twin and the smoothness of an in line four.... Bags of torque as you say
@@thebingleywheeler One dealer actually ask "are you sure you aren't here to look at the African Twin " to which I replied "is that what I ask to see ?" I didn't buy from this dealer LOL
I ride a used 2017 DCT since may 2024 allready 4000 km (ODO 19000 km) on Michelin Road 6 tires and with Akrapovic. Best bike for all my needs. 😊 Regards from Hungary!
Totally agree with everything you say regards the Crosstourer. I’m on my second, first was a manual and now run a 2015 DCT Highlander. Absolutely love it and as you say a vastly underrated motorcycle. The only thing that I’d say goes against it is the weight, coupled with a high centre of gravity make it a weighty beast to move around. 👍
Picked up my one last Wednesday. It's 2019 manual with Highlander Pack for less than 10 grand. Traded in my Vfr800x. Should go for Crosstourer straight away, rather than buying little brother first. Changed H7 headbulb for HID and installed 30 mm handlebars risers. Awesome bike.
Thats a hell of a deal. Ive had the dct a year looked down on by most GS owners for no good reason . I paid £10000 dct not highlander spec due to all the wieght addition
I've just bought one and thoroughly enjoyed your comparison , as I'd previously owned a gsa too. I notice you have fitted a gs type of guard over your rear wheel, can you tell me where you got this as I've looked for one with no joy
Loved the vlog. A rider who knows bikes is a rider worth listening to. Still happy with my 1999 VFR800 (it's my third in a row) and can't think of any reason to chop it in for a modern 'computer on two wheels'.
Dealer support is a factor as well. I had a Aprilia Caponard 1200...loved it but had to drive 5 hours to closest dealer. When touring the USA having confidence in bike is one thing but i also like to know whatever town i find myself in, i can get parts and service if needed. This is why i run a Honda Transalp now...also for lighter weight. I love and utilize Givi Canyon soft bags, but off road folks here prefer Mosko Moto soft bags
Buying an outgoing model is the way ahead. I purchased a new last years model moto guzzi tt 850 travel. I saved myself almost 3 grand over the current model...
Good review with helpful information. 1. Any issues with the suspensions? Heard that the front tend to rattle a lot when going over compacted dirt roads. 2. Would you buy this bike if your inseam is 30" (76 cm) ?
I and my pals have been riding forever and they own the Honda crosstourer, the reports back are similar to yours they love the machine. The problem I and others are having is that bike is not available in Canada , friends who are owners are Americans the bike is for sale in every country in the world except here. making contact with Honda corporate is impossible. Nice review!!
I'm planning on taking my bike licence this year (I'm 41) and fancy a vfr800x for touring Europe. Much to my dismay it is being discontinued because it won't meet Euro5 emissions. I hope there's one left on the lot when I pass :) They seem to be a diamond in the ruff. Ride safe.
Wonderful review thankyou, I cannot figure out Honda's decision making regards this bike. What can we do to change their mind? I am 3 years away from a new bike. But this one is at the top of the list if I can still find one.
It would be great to be able to influence Honda but I'm guessing it's all about margin and sales. Fingers crossed for an updated Pan European or Crosstourer though there ain't much wrong with the current one 😁
I just bought a 2017 CT DCT, and am very very happy with it. I miss cruise control though and want to change the windshield fo a better protection. What cruise control do you recommand ?
A bit late, but if you want "proper" cruise control (not throttle lock), your main option is the MCCruise unit. They're not cheap at 800 dollarydoos and installation is probably not easy, but once they're in I've heard they are great.
I love straight John Bull people and reviews. As an honorary Yorkshireman (30 yrs and counting) I think you are correct. I have an 1150GS and will most likely replace it with a 1200X. Thanks, good review.
Owned a 2012 crosstourer, loved it. Next week gonna get a 2020 wit 700miles on it. Love it. But only got one question about the screen. I find it kinda wiggly. Yours too? Grreeting from belgium and new follower of your channel 👍
Considering to buy a 2012 old Crosstourer (Good price with few miles) I had a ktm 1290 when it came out 2017 Great bike, but so expensive in maintenance After few month it was already several time for repair because some electronic didn’t work properly, didn’t start once during a tour… would not dare to make big journeys with it anymore Thus, I sold it again Hope the crosstourer will make me happy
Some great information embedded in this review video, thanks. I would have preferred more detail on this bike - mpg? range? - rather than the background and the demise of tourers etc. Weakest point of the 1200R is the mpg/range and this is the biggest issue (after reliability) for touring in Scotland.
I have a 2017 gsa , finish is coming off the back end,, under warranty bmw refused to do anything. Needed new front electronic suspension 4 days after warranty ran out , over a grand to repair. Just had a new throttle sensor fitted after it went into limp mode ..£450. And cam shaft parts needed replaced ..£900. So I'm looking at one of these. Gsa"s are great bikes but very expensive once they break.
Hi yes my GSA is a 2009 and the electronic suspension packed in at 24k....currently have it stripped down to address surface corrosion on parts of frame and screen brackets...a brilliant bike when working but gets fragile with age...having both bikes I would observe that the Honda is a bigger and heavier bike than the GS Adventure....30Kg heavier but just as agile...suspension is fully adjustable but all manual...a much better built, much more reliable workhorse...3 years warranty from new...the CT will be your faithful friend...the GSA your fickle mistress! 😊
What is the rear mudguard and is it worth having? I just picked one up for under £3.5k used, getting delivered next week. A 2013 with almost 64k miles but tidy enough. Givi crash bars, auxiliary lights and a Trekker 47 top box, SW Motech sump guard, MRA XCT screen and a rear hugger. I have Kappa K-Venture 37 cases and a huge matching 58L Givi Outback Trekker top box so just need to order a rack to suit. I've bought it to replace my 99 ST1100Ax 50th Pan European which is on its second fuel tank, alternator, rear ABS modulator and third swing arm, it has also just had a complete clutch assembly and housing and a fresh timing belt. I was looking at ST1300's and BMW R11-1200RTs as I was looking for something a bit newer and with the issues I've had during ownership I was looking for something different. Although whatever I was going to buy had to be shaft drive, I can't be bothered with chains or belts on a tourer/commuter. V4 is a bonus, come to think of it almost every bike I've owned has been a V. I already have an '88 XRV650 Africa Twin if I want to go off road which is much more suitable for that kind of riding, I also have a '93 NTV650 as a winter hack. Shame the new NT1100 is chain drive. I know it is based on the CRF Africa Twin engine, but the Revere/NTV/Deauville were shaft drive and were based on the Bros/Hawk/Shadow/Transalp/XRV Africa Twin engine, just with a different left crankcase and bevel box instead of a sprocket on the countershaft. Are Touring bikes coming back? Having learnt to ride on my XL125v Varadero, I like the riding position of an "adventure" bike, having spent a couple of years and many, many miles on it.
The vfr1200x in USA you can not turn off the abs :( You should try it with DCT, dual clutch transmission makes riding stress free when you hit the slower traffic and makes riding more enjoyable. I like your analysis on motorbikes and things, you have a lot of character :)
I would imagine they discontinued it as they weren't getting the sales to justify getting it through euro 5. Its a shame a lot of great bikes got the chop thanks to euro 5 bullshit.
Looks a great bike, not sure how it sneaked under my radar, i bought the DL1000, but its a great bike. Although very difficult to get on and off with the full aluminium adventure luggage.
im revisiting this option again, im extremely undecided, there are many of these bikes New still at dealers heavily discounted, $9500 as we speak, that is less than half of the GS. I want the GS, but this Honda is HALF! but the biggest issue, is i need cruise and the whole reason for looking at this or the GS is the ability to go in the dirt. I could put maybe a 50/50 tires but the weight is a big issue to me too. I am 5'6" 150 lbs. Maybe add the MC cruise aftermarket? is this a tall bike?
Hi and thank you for your comments. Yes you can fit the MC Cruise after market electronic cruise control or the much cheaper mechanical Kaoko....both will work. With the correct tires this bike will go off road easily just be aware that it is heavier than a GS Adventure....I have a GS Adventure with standard seat and both bikes are about the same height
Hello 👋. I know you just got a gold wing and I think you got rid of the honda 1200x .can you please tell me how you put the bike on it centre stand is there a knack I just got the bike and my wife keeps saying it too big for you please 🙏 tell me. Best regards ivor
It's a bike that never really caught on for whatever reasons, poor sales figures for Honda. I test rode one about 5 years ago, I agree the build quality was superb and shaft drive. But I do think if Honda had made some changes it would of sold better? The luggage I think is ugly and not very good quality, poor mpg, if my memory serves correct when I rode one no cruise control and these things do matter on a touring bike. It was a bike that was on my radar for a few years, but I now ride a Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sport 1100 DCT. Well done on the video, you raised some good points.
It certainly would've sold better with cruise notwithstanding the availability of after market solutions. It would have been better had Honda developed something more powerful than the AT for the adventure bike market thus offering more serious competition for the GSA.... Particularly with shaft drive 👍
@@thebingleywheeler Yes I agree, something like the Africa Twin Adventure Sport with shaft drive and the option of DCT would of made a great touring bike.
Cant agree with 90% of comments .Had one, dct , hated the dct !! Hated the brakes, hated the weight and its an alco on the fuel .Pegs are in your way as you stop .Near let it drop over 3-4 times taking it in and out of shed . Finish on the wheels is crap n fades . Alll bolts rust like fk!! Nope sold it and sooooo happy "I" did . Not for me .👍
@@thebingleywheeler Noo , I had a state of the ART pile of cow dung, Honda Crosstourer 🤣🤣🤣👍, wasnt for me , it was my 17th bike since 16yrs old now 50yrs young , for me , I hated it !! 🤣👍
Hi.... Well it is better built than the GS that's for sure....everything feels more solid. The finish is way better and the Honda V4 engine is much stronger than the GS boxer twin. The GSA has the advantage of electronic suspension but that's what went wrong on mine and cost a fortune. No worries there with the Honda 😊
Yeah, that's it. Thanks bro. On a side note, I caught the second vid just after I wrote you. You know, I'm not a Honda guy and got my vfrx1200 because I needed a commuter NOW and, it was the cheapest thing with shaft drive on a multi brand showroom floor. I was looking at a fjr1300 but they wanted more for used with miles on it. After riding this bitch like I stole her through Tijuana Mexico every day for a year, I'm convinced that 1, it's a road bike. I put the Michelin road 5's on 1000 miles ago and, it's a different machine. 2, what the hell am I gonna do with electric suspension? I do like the rear-front brake combo and the traction control has kept the bike under me plenty of times. Other than that, all these add-ons are fluff. I even turned off the abs. Next I gotta figure out the shock and dampener settings. I've changed a few things like installing real brush guards. I do think the rev limiter kicks in a tad early..
Thanks for this. Hard to fault your logic, and. I agree that it is a shame to be seeing the demise of the traditional tourer, especially for the short of leg. I’m the opposite shape, with a 35” inside leg, so I need as tall a bike as possible, yet I don’t want superfluous ride modes or flimsy electronics. If only the RE Himalayan had a top speed that could keep up with motorway traffic I would go for cheap and simple. Currently running a VFR800 fe, and I probably should have gone for the VFR800 Crossrunner for more comfort. It is a great shame that there is no Pan European now, as the GoldWing is ridiculously expensive. I don’t see why BMW don’t sell more RT models, unless it is just the sheep mentality forcing them to produce more GS models.
Many thanks for your kind comments Mark ....if there was a new Pan I'd be in there swapping it for my old GSA in a breath...Africa Twin and Goldwing with nothing in between...madness!! 👍
Hi....at the time there were several brand new Highlanders in this price band...one was less than 10k....you can still get them if you shop around www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254528663572
@@thebingleywheeler Well it seems they have all gone. The pool is shrinking. Anyhow, it's the price to change that matters really and I have just bought a new DCT Highlander so really looking forward to getting it in a week or so. Your vlog did play a big part in pointing me this way, I've had a few 1100pan's in the past and loved them, think this is going to be very similar but even better. I hope!
@@thebingleywheeler just re-visiting some video's I enjoyed. Had it a little while now & have been really impressed with my CT, cannot see me ever getting rid TBH. It has everything I want and nothing I don't.

Ii am a honda fan i have a 97 vfr750. I could pick up a mint tdm 900 which can do most of the thing these so called pretend adventure bikes do for £2500 HAPPY DAYS.
I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on the crosstourer and also your opinion on the adventure bike market in general. I completely agree that a big adventure bikes ability off road is completely irrelevant to the vast majority of riders. Fact of the matter is they are all way too heavy and way too expensive to be used seriously off road and their smaller lighter counterparts are far superior off road. I reckon though it was a little unfair to dismiss the v strom because it isn't shaft driven. There's pros and cons to both shaft and chains and its totally down to preference. By your parameters that the croastourer is the best because its does everything for less money than its rivals and it more reliable then the suzuki has the crosstourer beat. I would say the honda definitely has superior build quality, the quality of finish on the suzuki is average at best. But one thing you can't take away from the suzuki is its reliability. That big v twin has been around since the mid 90s and its proved itself damn near unkillable. The vstrom also handles like no adventure bike I've ever seen. If you ever come to replace your crosstourer I would highly recommend you try a v strom on demo, you never know you might be converted.
if i can beg honda to redo this bike, please redo it, it already has the good dna we want, but it needs to lose weight, a 1000cc is enough, put the disp;lay of the africatwin. absolutely needs cruise control. i love the style, i love shaft drive, i love the single side arm, wire wheels. it just needs to lose weight, this can be a mild adventure bike but not at 600 lbs
Hi..mostly agreed but does need to be 1200-1300cc mark or it won't compete with BMW, KTM, Ducati, Triumph...maybe loose a bit of weight and update some tech including TFT display but the awesome 1237 V4 needs to be the platform imho 😁👍
I have no problem calling any motorcycle you can toss a leg over an “adventure” bike - after all, most riding is usually an adventure, right? But genre nonsense and marketing nomenclature aside, why bother with categories at all?
@@szoe139 Sure. If budget is not a problem, then you can buy several bikes to fulfil your biking requirements and styles. No bike is perfect for biking requirements. So budget is an important consideration you go with a bike that ticks most boxes within your budget. Cost-benefit analysis always applies for rational decisions.
I'm torn between the tiger 1200 and the crosstourer. The tiger is the best looking adventure bike in my opinion and its much better spec'd than the crosstourer, but iys considerably more expensive. And triumph have a chequered history with reliability.

Hello 👋. I know you just got a gold wing and I think you got rid of the honda 1200x .can you please tell me how you put the bike on it centre stand is there a knack I just got the bike and my wife keeps saying it too big for you please 🙏 tell me. Best regards ivor
The goldwing or the VFR?
@@thebingleywheeler thank you
It's a bike that never really caught on for whatever reasons, poor sales figures for Honda.
Fantastic review, thanks.
Thank you sir 👍
I like the looks of the crosstourer, i wish Honda would offer allloy wheels , i think they would improve the looks even more.
Hi mate where did you get that hugger that is attached to the shaft drive.
Hi on ebay from a company called "GP"
Smart Bike...Smart Choice...Smart Ride. Nothing beats HONDA Motorcycle ever... It's a GS , Multistrada KiLLer!!!
Always fancied one of these but Im not sure if I could get my feet down at 5ft 7.
Try one you might be surprised.... Nothing like as tall as the Africa Twin 👍
@@thebingleywheeler thanks..I will definitely try one out... might swap the AT for one of these 🏍👍
@@allanmcwilliam551 there will be a lowering kit out there for it. Usually they are dead simple to fit and drop the height 20-30mm
Not for me .👍
You obviously had an extra rare spoof one…..are you sure it wasn’t a Harley in drag 😂😂😂
@@thebingleywheeler Noo , I had a state of the ART pile of cow dung, Honda Crosstourer 🤣🤣🤣👍, wasnt for me , it was my 17th bike since 16yrs old now 50yrs young , for me , I hated it !! 🤣👍
@@declanmcguirk9199 each to their own….mine was a superb bike
How does it compare to the GS 1200?
I saw on the chanel You owned one.
Nice review
Cheers!
@@thebingleywheeler thx for the reply
Ride safe
you have a link for those aftermarket side plates? I want em after watching the vid!
Hi which plates do you mean?
Do you mean the Hepco and Becker filler plate?
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/153515081213
Is there a left side?
Hiya, wish I could find a Highlander for between £10k and £11k! You can get the basic bike but not the panniers etc.
I hope!
@@jfro5867 great news....I had the ST1100 Pan for many years and loved it....you will feel instantly at home with the CT 😊👍
@@thebingleywheeler just re-visiting some video's I enjoyed. Had it a little while now & have been really impressed with my CT, cannot see me ever getting rid TBH. It has everything I want and nothing I don't.

I want to mount a car screen on my bike with a window wiper, I mean why put a little adaptor on just go whole hog , windscreen, roof, maybe even doors, oh and a seatbelt .
Fantastic idea!
BMW made one with a screen, wiper and roof and seatbelts but was only a 125/200cc.
@@anotherhonda9402 they did too!!!!
great bike my Ktm 1290 was junk to, kept burning my bum, my gs was also not that reliable, the Honda is bullet proof, juhaptergee
Probably because that's how manufacturers tend to market their wares....as you can see on most of their websites....
No cruise control, unforgivable on a touring bike.
You can get aftermarket cruise... either electronic or mechanical 😊👍
the honda goldwing will be finishing 2027 last model out know
You missed out the Triumph Tiger 1200, which is in fact the best adventure bike
I did indeed.... But like the others it's big money.... too big 😁
The question is how much of a bike you can get with the same money as the Crosstourer.
No full dressers...Harley,Indian, V Star.
I do like the Star venture...can't get it here
Yes, all very interesting I’m sure, but what about the CT!!!
Got bored and tuned out after 10 minutes of nonsense. . .

you forgot Triumph Tiger 1200 . You are British how come you forget Triumph tiger 1200 when you mention about whole lot of other bikes?
I forgot 👍😊
