I FIXED The $300 Buick LeSabre For ONLY $4 *And Found The Ant Colony*

  • A few months ago I bought this 1996 Buick LeSabre for $300, but wasn't able to go pick it up. It had been parked after replacing the starter because it broke again immediately after. I assumed the new starter failed and it would just need a new part, but a quick test proved the starter was fine. It will take some more troubleshooting but the fix may be much easier and cheaper than replacing the starter. At least it's powered by the most reliable engine EVER built!

To the buyer, beware of the guaranteed coolant leak at the lower intake manifold. The gaskets that they put in the 3.3 and 3.8 v6 engines were plastic/nylon and always leaked. It's not too bad of a repair to exchange it out with the Felpro aluminum gasket and then you should get another hundred thousand miles out of that engine.

I picked up a 96 Buick Riviera Coupe (Supercharged Series 2 3800 is kicking strong at 180k miles) for 800 bucks a few weeks ago, no big problems with it at all aside from the paint having near zero clear coat left and the leather seats are pretty warn but not destroyed so it needs a respray and some seat covers for the time being. I was going to flip it but I took it on a mini road trip to pick up a friend and some wheels for my Eclipse build and I'm really close to just doing a complete refresh fixing every little thing and doing a respray in the booth. Friends laughed at a 28 year old driving around in a 90's Buick until they rode in it, same thing happened with my 89 Camry Wagon lol.

Also, a good MAF and EGR cleaning seems to free up some horses on those engines IMHO. Those center armrests were badly designed and 99% of them that I've seen in junkyards are badly broken, that's probably why it was removed.

I bought one just like this, a 98 white with a blue interior, from Carmax four years ago for $700 with exactly 80,000 miles on it. Aside from doing the basic stuff when I got it like hoses, belt, filters, tires and tune-up because they were old. The car now has 70k more on it and not one single issue, even the a/c still works 100%. I of course did the intake gaskets because they are known for issues but used the good metal ones and don't ever expect to go there again. Can't complain for a $700 car that only gets oil changes when it asks for one and tire rotations. I wouldn't hesitate to fill it up and drive cross country right now.

First car I bought was a '95, same color, except the roof, trunk, and hood had more primer showing. Slightly less mileage for $1500, but a bit of rust - eventually needed brake lines and a transmission line. A few years ago, nearly a decade after selling the original, I found another, identical car, with slightly better paint and only 68k miles. Paid more for that than my original, but it's nearly rust free. Not my daily driver, so it sat for a while and needs a fuel pump now, which I just have not been motivated enough to do...
Still love driving that car. Decent power, AMAZINGLY smooth ride, and couch-on-wheels comfort inside. Making me want to get that fuel pump done... Before I stash her away for the winter.

The electrical systems in GM cars have always been strong. Every old Cadillac I have ever bought, and I am talking about '60's cars, have worked great.

Nope...they have been the primary issue on our 3800 vehicles between 1991 and 2005. Well, that and the awful 4T60E.

Michael Krenzer can confirm the 4l6*e transmission is junk. Volvo (they used the 4L65e) made the poor choice of using it in their straight 6 cylinder s80 models and they would die so fast. Especially on t6 models that were twin turbo and made 270+hp factory.

A quick google search yields that although it does work, it doesn't work as effectively and cleanup is a bit more of a hassle due to the petroleum inside.

If you're spraying the panel with soapy water like you are supposed to, there is little or no oily film from the putty.

I would love a $300 car like this to call my own. I'm still a teenager and I am able to use my parent's cars but I want a car that I can learn how to fix and this would be awesome! 4 years a go my friend's car just like this started overheating so they just got rid of it and I wish I would have asked about that. It may have been a head gasket though but I just want to learn so badly so I'll take anything. And I can never find a car this cheap. lol Your videos are great!

This was pretty awesome! I really like my LeSabre too, and it’s decently fast (even with a Series I 3800). You definitely don’t want to mess with the center arm rest unless you’re willing to ram a threaded rod thru it haha. They always broke, and I remember a salesman saying “put a book or something underneath it, that way it won’t break”. Mine’s going strong at 212.000ish kilometers and recently had everything fixed that was wrong with this 3800

Great video man! It's worth noting you have your quickjacks on the wrong side of the car. The locking bar should be on the outside of the vehicle so you don't have to reach under anything to release the lock bar.

I bought on in 2002 for 400 bucks. Drove it for years and then gave it to my son who drove it for a couple more years. He broke an axle and got rid of it but it could have been fixed for about 75 bucks. One of the best cars I ever owned.
