Footage from one of 2011's NFTS Steadicam Training Short Courses following the course members master the art of big rig Steadicam! It was shot mainly by Steadicam Operator and instructor John E Fry with a Panasonic AF101 on a Steadicam Pilot as a little test of that combination.

Sorry about the odd pixel doubling issue - converting the AF101s files swapped the fields I think & I didn't spot it till the final render due to FCP & progressive monitors helpful way of combining fields in preview.

Internal video cable takes the signal from the 'video out' connector on the camera down the post to the monitor.
Wonderful equipment and skill.
No, the focus puller focusses using a wireless remote follow focus, or leave a mid-distance focus point on a wide lens so everything will be in focus & no pulling is necessary. Another reason Steadicam shots are often wide.
Well, you have to insurable! So I guess that means at least 18.

I really love the video, and i'm looking forward to i get mine here in Brazil, and start the training.
But what i miss from your video is the point of view from the steadicam also, like picture in picture sometimes. I would like to see how it act, with different operators, so i can get "in" to the tension of your course. I feel it would be great for your video, promoting the course.. and for me... more to learn and enjoy.

Hi, so when on steadycam do you leave the focus on auto? will auto focus do the job right ? can you have it on manual and focus yourself the operator?

Ah yes, I think that's over control rather than a balance issue, although the rig had been out all afternoon & may not have been checked since the last run. That's what the course is for though, & all part of the learning process, allowing the new Operators to identify what they need to practice & what to check before shooting.

Even if the rig were not perfectly dynamically balanced it would't make a difference to what he's doing in that shot because the camera is not rotating fast enough for dynamic balance to have any effect. What do ou mean about the monitor & battery?

Got a Steadicam similar to this at my university, still trying to get the hang of using it properly, haven't had a lot of practice with it yet, the camera tends to spin around for me when I use it, but that's because I'm not using/gripping it correctly

How much tightness or damping should the iso-elastic arm's 'elbow' joint have? When I (try to) operate, the joint rocks fore and aft quite a bit, and the motion is transmitted directly to the sled (leading me to wonder why I don't just shoot handheld!) Of course I'm just starting out and probably need lots more practice...
What rig are you using?
SteadicamOperatorUK *Varizoom Aviator MX*. (Price competitive with the Steadicam Pilot.) I suspected that I could treat the issue by trimming the balance of the post where the arm meets the vest, and since I posted here, I've been experimenting with that to some success. FWIW, Steadicam-brand arms seem a lot more refined... (I'm wondering now if it was worth saving $500 over the Pilot. Live and learn I guess.)
+Matthew Ward i have an mx and a pilot. avaitor isnt bad at all just takes a little more time to get good with it. hell the mx takes 15lbs pilot is 7lbs
tennismediadynamics My problem (I guess) is that I'm not working with quite enough weight, with my D800 rig and the included 10lb weight. Do you find that the Aviator works more smoothly when the arm is loaded closer to its capacity rating?
Man that huge camera seems like it will hurt your back flying it. Good thing that dslr's, Red's, and Cinema Camera's are alot smaller.
Steadicam should never 'hurt' you if the vest is setup for you correctly and you maintain good posture. Proper training teaches you all this and a lot more: nfts.co.uk/our-courses/short-courses/camera-sound
Also, a Cinema Camera isnt really that "smaller" then the camera you see in this video. WIth all the equipment on, it could be even heavier!

Well, you won't be able to hire a full Steadicam without any training, and even then it'd be very difficult to get usable results in that environment without A LOT of practice - it took me six months practice before I felt happy enough with my own ability to do my first broadcast Steadicam job. Workshops & our course teach you to minimise the physical strain.
If the wedding want Steadicam, then hire a Steadicam AND a professional Operator. You wouldn't hire a plane without a pilot!

What kind of strain does it have on you physically. One or 2 of the guys on film looked like they were struggling with the weight. Poor Kieran looked exhausted. I have a wedding to film in a few months (the complete works with reception included) and was looking at hiring a complete steadicam kit. Its the prolonged filming with that kind of weight that is worrying me as I am small guy.

Depends which rig you buy, for what camera, what accessories you need, etc. etc. etc.

Because all broadcast cameras (& most digital cinema cameras) have their controls on the viewfinder side, which is facing the operator when set up googfy.
