    I agree with your point on true sustainability when it comes to our attitude towards consumption. However, it’s more complicated when it comes to producing products, for example garments. They could be made in the most ‘sustainable’ way but if the garment workers aren’t treated and paid fairly, it’s not true sustainability IMO. Most fashion brands exploit garment workers and not enough influencers speak out and turn down brand deals on account of it.

      As someone’s who’s been dairy free since long before oat milk was a thing you could buy in supermarkets: This is 100% the reason why I got into drinking lattes cause it was the only way I could drink almond milk in coffee, otherwise I’d have it black !
      Also I know Lucy has almond because she’s gluten-free, but if that’s not a requirement for you then oat milk doesn’t curdle and is creamier so also froths better when you steam it (hence why it’s become so popular over last few years)

    My mum is very savvy when it comes to minimising wastage and reusing materials. Part of it is because she came from a poor background, so she really appreciates the value of things. I have learnt so many tips from her! Now in the current age, things are so easily accessible and can be ordered in one click. I'm definitely thinking twice about my shopping habits these days, like buying a book full price from the local shop, rather then discounted on Amazon. Yeh I could have saved some money, but it's less packaging, delivery miles etc. and also supporting a local business.

Not sure that holding on to cardboard boxes vs reducing the amount of flying (on holidays) is a more sustainable choice. I totally agree with your sustainability comment! I lived with my grandma throughout university, and I learned SO MUCH just from seeing how she never wasted anything and truly took care of everything she owned (maintaining and repairing.) She was never satisfied with any products or appliances that didn’t last her AT LEAST 10 years. Recycling isn’t something she started doing recently, but is a habit she’s had her whole life. She’s also super responsible with disposing of chemical waste or old furniture/electric appliances (things no one warned me of or taught me how to take care of.)

  • @duck6100
    @duck6100 3 года назад +20

    Idk I don't think many of us have lost that sustainable behaviour you were talking about. Maybe it just depends on how you were brought up but I save all the packaging I get and reuse it/repair clothes instead of throwing out because my mum always did that. Our parents didn't live in such a consumerist world though. Ordering online wasn't really a popular thing accessible to many people and even with cars and stuff not as many people owned one. So I think it's only natural that we have to do more than our parents did i.e. avoiding fast fashion (especially the big brands that ship from abroad like shein or romwe bc they're so low quality the clothes aren't likely to last very long) and reducing our meat consumption. Ofc only doing what's within your means financially.

    Loved this vlog so much Lucy, you're such a joy to watch! Here in Canada we are still in a hardcore lockdown in my area, so I am living through you a bit in this video, I feel you so hard with the missing of friends and family.
    Thoughts on sustainability...I think it all comes down to just thinking more critically about things. My parents save and reuse quite a bit more than me, but they are also constantly buying things that they don't need just because they are discounted, rather than living more minimally like I do. I suppose it's a give and take. My partner's parents immigrated here, and we've often encouraged them to let go of all the "things" they've hoarded over the years, but I recently had to take a step back and realize what a privilege it is to declutter, to feel comfortable knowing that if I need something again in the future, I will be able to easily access it. We take so much for granted!
    Aaaaaanyways. I don't think it's a straightforward answer and I think it's important to keep in mind that individualism is a bit of a distraction technique when it comes to environmentalism. But I love all the thoughts you are having and the small changes you are making in your life!
    Love the content as always.

    I've been thinking about the sustainability thing too. Anytime I want to buy something I imagine my mums face when I show it to her. on our end, it's very hard to find affordable brands, that are actually doing their bit to be sustainable. A lot of my favourite items that I have had for years have come from cheaper brands or fast fashion companies, if fast fashion companies won't slow down, we can slow down by thinking more clearly about what we are buying. i don't know if that makes sense but my mum is very good at knowing what is a good purchase and what isn't, her generation didn't consume like we do and i think we should get that back.

    Hello from Finland. I have never bought cardboard boxes for moving. I have done most of my moves mainly using boxes that alcohol stores gets their vine in. 12 bottle boxes. (Also book stores might have good boxes. Some people ask banana boxes from grosery stores.) Even if I would pack up vine boxes full of books, they are not too heavy for me - the not so strong woman. Those shops are happy to give them away if they have not yet trashed them or given them to somebody else. They have been nice enough to even apologise (!) if they don't have any and asked me to call them before hand if I want to be sure to have some specific amount saved for me. ❤️ Got to love those people. They save money with smaller litter expences and other people can reuse their boxes, which saves them money and saves nature sources. ❤️

    • @dace8828
      @dace8828 3 года назад

      Same in Latvia. You can ask at a grocery store and they'll let you get whatever boxes they have near the bins. My mom needed somewhere to store apples do we got her sturdy fruit boxes from a shop in my area. Alcohol shops here even leave nice boxes near the till and anyone can take them. The reason i check with the security guard if it is ok is just common courtesy to make sure they know i am not trespassing or loitering

    P.S. Coffee is actually best not kept in the fridge! I work for a coffee roaster, and we advise our customers not to keep their coffee in the fridge - it's likely to pick up the flavors of the foods around it and muddle its taste. You could keep it in the freezer until you're ready to use it (and then not refreeze again), but best storage for coffee that you are using consistently is actually just on the counter!(:

    Especially in London, where apartments are small it's really hard to save things you might need in the future rather than throwing things out and just buying back when you need it. I try and save things, and have a lot of tools and materials for repairing things, but I'll be the first to admit our apartment is cluttered... Organised clutter, but it's definitely not a clean minimalist aesthetic, and I do feel uncomfortable inviting people over (when it was allowed :P).
    All this to say, when space is at a premium, it practically, financially and socially makes sense to do some of these less sustainable practices.

    If housing wasn't so expensive, if we were able to live off one income, there would be space to save all the crap that is useful once every 10 years. However, a small apartment you simply cannot save everything just in case.

    LUCY TAKE THAT COFFEE OUT OF THE FRIDGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Coffee should be stored at room temperature, the fridge is too cold, it will lose taste, it will get condensation in it from the temperature change going in and out of the fridge, it will absorb all the smells in it, just no no no 😬

    Lucy, don’t think you have thyroid of an elderly lady 😉 so many women are diagnosed with thyroid-related conditions these days...
    I actually was diagnosed with Hashimoto last year, unfortunately together with thyroid cancer and had to have half of my thyroid removed..
    In the end it teaches you to treat yourself well, right?

    not to sound like a barista lol but you shouldn’t keep your coffee in the fridge!! cool, dark places are best to store your coffee, the fridge is a common misconception :)

    Woah, I’m just getting tested for thyroid! My mum has it and I’ve been having/going to doc for all the symptoms for years and years and finally broke down to the dr how I was feeling physically fuzzy and it made me scared to even go on a walk so I’m getting tested now.(at 27) I didn’t even know what symptoms were just that my mum took drugs for it 😂
    But anyway what i was actually going to comment was that I drink cheap soya milk and what I do is put the coffee in the mug then a splash of hot water to mix it - then put the spoon in the sink and don’t touch it - then put the milk in the the rest of the hot water. Unless you have a fancy coffee machine then I don’t know how to help you.

    If you fine almond milk curdling a lot, you should try oat milk!! It’s a lot better for the environment than any nut milks or real milk as well

      @@Nicole-zy4vb, at least in Finland they grind gluten containing grains at the same mills or at least same facility as oats. So any product with Finnish oats is not totally gluten free. :'( They might be able to say that they are "gluten free" but not get ok mark from celiac disease association, since even the tinyest amount of gluten can f**k up stomac and intestine of a person with celiac disease. :'(
