DoorDash's No Tip Message: A SLAP IN THE FACE to Drivers...

  • In this doordash driver video, I discuss DoorDash's message to customers that don't tip.
    On the surface, this seems like a good change for DoorDash drivers, but is it enough?
    This video talks about how this message is a start, but how customers are being forced to cover even more of the dashers pay because doordash is keeping more of the drivers hard earned money due to lowering base pay.

      They want to keep as much info from being dispersed between the customer and the driver, Because we all know that when the info is traded and both parties work together and stop arguing amongst on another, these piece of sh!t companies lose. So its literally a MUST that neither side has too much info about one another, as it would shoot a hole right through their scheme. THEY get to see ALL of the data though. EVEN THOUGH, they arent the sole party in the transaction. ALL parties should have ALL info.

    I did a pay per hour trip the other night for the first time to try it out. My first trip of the night had a 20 minute wait at the restaurant, and then an 11 mile, 20 minute trip to the customer. I had well over $200 worth of food for the customer, and figured i was going to make out very well at the end. I delivered it, got back in the car and looked at the pay out. 54 minutes total, 13.50 from dd......ZERO tip from the customer. I was fuming. Later on for my last trip of the night, 15 miles to the customer, ZERO tip, $11 from dd for 48 minutes. Can't do this anymore. I'm getting paid less than a teenager would make, and running my car into the ground to boot

      Couldn't agree more. I've got to quit for the same reasons. My 17 year old son and his friends make more than I do. I'm 51 with a college degree but a lot of health problems. This work has been very convenient for my health. Been doing it full time since April 2016. It used to be great. It's horrible now. Ridiculous offers and tons of miles. Plus far fewer offers than used to be, far and few between. It's not just DD. All the delivery apps have gone to crap, especially Grubhub and Uber Eats. I made more when I was 19. This work is a joke anymore. Tired of the stress. Not sure yet what I'm going to do but got to figure it out and soon.

It’s a flat out lie and they’re taking advantage of the new drivers who don’t know any better just so they can pay us less. I’m not saying that I want the government to make them pay us more but the government needs to step in and make them stop with all the lies. We need full transparency laws.

    I feel so overwhelmed by the sheer number of offers sent my way that have no tips or maybe a dollar (maybe, because what I'm seeing could be DD's base pay only). Or a higher amount (let's say $4.50) that wants us to go 10+ miles to deliver. These are easily 90% of my offers. I sit and hit decline after decline and maybe limp away with $30 after a 2 hour shift. Those shifts used to be $45+ not all that long ago. If I'm getting so many of these kinds of crap offers, so too are a lot of other drivers. It's really more than absurd.

And the media also jumps gleefully onto the driver-bashing bandwagon. Customers see all this crap. Add on the exorbitant fees that Door Dash charges for delivery, it's no wonder a lot of customers don't tip.

  • @preciousunderwood1512

    When people were getting paid well with these apps, I didnt really hear that much complaining about tips. Now that they want to pay $0 for the work, the customer is expected to supplement the drivers income. If they didn't steal so much, there would be enough for the driver without the tip, but since we dont tip as much because of the high fees, it makes us look cheap. The money is there, they're just taking it out of the drivers pocket, and the customer is expected to pick up the peices. Can't wait for this house of cards to collapse.

    • @ZachDrivesFast
      @ZachDrivesFast  10 месяцев назад

      I think the proper solution to this is a 50/50 split between what DD pays and what the customer makes up in tips. Most orders have fees high enough to get the driver to start the car and drive to the restaurant. The problem is DD is keeping upwards of 80-90% of those fees. If you paid $10 in fees and the driver got half of it and you tipped a couple of dollars, assuming your order was going a few miles or less, I think that would be reasonable. But no...DD is forcing your hand as a customer to pay even more to ensure you actually get the service you paid for. It's a lose/lose for the drivers and customers.

And they do this at the onset of the holidays, which are a traffic nightmare everywhere so when someone actually does tip as a result of the pop up, they will likely get their food late and also likely take it out on the driver in the form of a bad review.

    Part of the problem is Doordash, itself, calling this a "tip." It's not a tip. Tips are given after service. If the customer gets their food, they've received the service already and it really has nothing to do with the food quality/speed of the restaurant, etc. The dasher spent their money to deliver - most likely eating up that base pay and then some.
    It's more like a bid at an auction. I think they should just do away with it, charge more, and add 1.75/mile and .50 to every $5 spent in food, to the base pay as a direct fee to the customer. Boom. Now you can tip for good service if you want and it won't matter.
    Doordash already doesn't break even. It costs money to develop and update an app and they do pay (probably very little lol) all the call center people in India and Pakistan or wherever it is. That's where the fee part of the order goes. The markup on the food goes to the restaurant. So you can get mad at them, but there is no more money to give dashers. Now, as far as what their board makes, I don't know. Maybe those are the people we should be upset with.

    • @esau93631
      @esau93631 10 месяцев назад +1

      That is why I hate the phrase no tip no trip. It makes a lot of drivers who give shitty service feel entitled to something before they even perform the service. Quite frankly, DD needs to stop offering customers unrealistic expectations, or pay the driver a fair price for the distance and percentage of the cost of the food. Any normal person would be pissed paying high fees knowing they ordered food from 10 miles away knowing the driver is only being offered $2. Also a lot of customers are ignorant to how the whole operation works. I think bashing all customers is a bad thing too, because not all of them are cheap asses, some may honestly think we are getting honest offers for our services.

    • @icestationzebraassociates2460
      @icestationzebraassociates2460 10 месяцев назад

      @@esau93631 Totally true, but dashers can't perform that service if they know they might not be paid for it. It costs money to deliver food and I lost money when I counted on the good graces of non tippers. Expenses and taxes are going to eat up that two bucks and then some. So the whole "dashers shouldn't expect a tip" when a "tip" is really what is needed to compensate them and not just cover expenses, is kind of wrong. If I get you your food, I HAVE to make more than two dollars or I can't do it. It's not a charity. Reimbursement for expenses isn't really "base pay" and the customers bid for service is really not a "tip." 3x2=6. Less than minimum wage and that's before tax and expenses.
      Definitely, people have no clue how it works. Regardless, though, the customer is going to pay more. That's just how it is. Either they can tip, or door dash can start charging more. All of the money comes from customers. They're just going to be less likely to order at all if it costs more upfront.

This message is to benefit DD so they don't have to keep refunding late food.#2 it's too late, all of the apps have catered to the no tip/low tip customer for years. They've been rewarded for not tipping. There aren't enough good tippers to cover all of the terrible tippers.#3 the reason DD has to charge such ridiculous fees is because they have to keep covering the losses of the no tip customers and fraudsters.#4 DD created their own problems by adding fast food and Starbucks. 20% of $10? No thanks.

    What a lot of customers don’t seem to understand when they say something like, “I’ll tip after delivery,” is that we do pay for everything ourselves to get them their food. You’ve already said that, but there is more. A server at a restaurant puts in their customer’s order and will then see the order before taking it to the customer and will be able to say that it’s not right. That right there, along with being friendly while interacting with the customer can increase the tip they receive. DoorDash orders see a sealed bag, or box in some cases, and have no control whatsoever over what is inside. Then the customer, even if they were honest about tipping after delivery (some are, but most aren’t), they want to use things like “missing items” or “food isn’t cooked the way the customer wants” as a reason to not tip or to tip less. Plus, the dashers that are doing what they should be doing will never see the part about a tip after delivery because they shouldn’t be accepting those orders to begin with and as we all know, we can’t see that until we accept an order.

    too much expectation in USA for tips. You already get paid commission for doing delivery. You work for yourself. Someone may be on budget for a month. No need to be rude, or leave nasty notes. Single mothers and fathers and families whether with kids or without kids out there that are struggling, it’s free to be nice and understanding. If they had extra they would have tipped if it is the culture in USA. But if they don’t then it is what it is. Sometimes home cooking is not cheaper, or going out with your own car can cost more with petrol. It is not always what you think. Do your work and make your earning and be thankful that. you just gained another commission for a delivery.

    I have one issue with the whole system. I always tip like 8-12 dollars but that driver always heads to the other dropoff first. Is it just shit luck that both orders tipped well so I’m always last delivery? Or do they make you drop them off in a certain order? Or do you get a violation for not getting the shitty tipper their food first, so the good tippers just have to wait drowning in sympathy.

      The route is always going to just be the most mile efficient. Usually. I've had the app literally drive me past a customer only to bring me back a mile from the store. If your driver is paying attention to this they have the ability to deliver in whatever order they want under the time constraints given. I wouldn't use the app if you don't have to though. They're fleecing you customer dry. And abusing it's drivers.

      The app guides the driver step by step which orders get picked up first and dropped off first . Doesn’t matter if the first drop off was a no tip order and the second order that someone tipped $10.00 for gets cold . It only depends on which drop off location is closest to the driver after he picks up the second order . Not really fair imo

      Dd will stack your good order with someone else's order. The driver is given the destinations and expected delivery times. There is a way to change it, on the driver menu it has a 'jump to task' option kinda hidden that would allow the driver to switch to your order first. Of course they do risk a contract violation for delivering the other order 'late'. Sorry you keep getting the short end of the stick, you sound like a good customer who tips well.

    • @ZachDrivesFast
      @ZachDrivesFast  10 месяцев назад

      First of all I'd like to thank you for the question and how you put it across. About a year ago DD made is so that we couldn't tell which customer tipped which amount. We can change the order of the delivery although many drivers probably don't realize that. But unfortunately, because DD took away the ability to check it would a pure guess on which order was paying more. I'm sure I speak for all drivers when I say an 8-12 dollar tip is very generous and we greatly appreciate you! Furthermore I can guarantee almost every driver out there would rather get you your meal first.

  • @esau93631
    @esau93631 10 месяцев назад +2

    I agree, there are the cheap customers, then there are a group of customers who actually think we are getting paid well from all the fees they paid, and then there is a third set of customers that will tip after delivery. I have noticed more of these lately with no tip in the app orders. I think these are customers who have tipped and got bad experiences. And they do not want to tip until the dust settles. There are a group of drivers who feel they are entitled to a tip, and they are not. However I think more states need to make transparency laws forcing Doordash to show what the driver will be paid to deliver their order. It is doordash making the deal with the customer and the separate deal with the driver. I think some of these customers who order from restaurants 10 miles away would be furious to see what the drivers are being offered, then there would be others who simply would not give a crap.

    • @icestationzebraassociates2460
      @icestationzebraassociates2460 10 месяцев назад +1

      It isn't really a tip though. Am I entitled to be reimbursed for my expenses? (which, lets be frank, $2 isn't going to cut it) I'm not? Then why would I do it at all? You're really arguing that? It's not a tip, it's a bid for service that, if I get in my car and drive and pick up your order, and then drive to your house (all successfully) I have performed and have to be paid for. If I finish three orders an hour I should expect exactly six dollars and be satisfied with that? With miles of probably 20 or more? Absolutely not. Would you? I can't because it costs money to deliver orders. It costs ME money. More than 2/delivery. It is absolutely not a tip and shouldn't be called one.

    • @ZachDrivesFast
      @ZachDrivesFast  10 месяцев назад +2

      I would urge every driver to decline every non-tip order 100% of the time. While the occasional customer may actually tip after, the fact of the matter is the overwhelming majority don't. It's a gamble and almost always a losing bet for the driver. If we weren't paying for our own gas, using our own cars and if we got an hourly rate, it would be a different story, but we're 100% out of pocket for our expenses. And yes, the driver is entitled to a tip. No driver should ever have to take a loss because a customer didn't want to do something for themselves. This is not meals on wheels.

    All drivers should start printing advertisement flyers showing that base pay is only $2 and $1 on multiple orders. It should state that their tip is the only thing that makes deliveries worthwhile, not what the company pays.
    It should also have a link to a website advocating through petitions for higher driver pay so that the pressure to leave tips is entirely removed on the customers end. These should be left in all the mailboxes of all the deliveries houses/buildings.
    This could be a revolutionary move and could possibly put the power back in the driver and customers hands.

      Hear me out - the customer always pays 100%. That's where the money comes from. That's true in every business, worldwide. Whoever the customer is - government, private, corporate, whatever. Doordash doesn't even break even every year. Ie. they spend more than they take in. Think about it - it costs money to develop and update an app. It costs money to store data. It costs money to background check and approve drivers. It costs money to run facilities in India and staff them with mediocre-at-best customer and driver service reps
      Really, doordash shouldn't exist because it's not economically viable, which is why they keep decreasing base pay and charging more. I stopped doing it because expenses were just too much to make it profitable. Not over a job where I'm not burning gas and tracking expenses and figuring out taxes and wearing out my car and worrying whether this eight dollar order has been sitting and I'll get a bad review and oh crap the app just froze on the way to deliver it....

Most people using DD are LARPing a lifestyle they cannot actually afford but now believe they are entitled to. Additionally, DD is exploiting both, the customer and the driver! All this tipping for every little thing needs to stop. The price that's advertised should be the price that the customer pays. There should be no expectation to receive a tip. I do agree that the driver should be compensated for their time and costs, but this should be an agreed upon amount before the customers order is submitted for payment.
    The big issue I have with companies like doordash is they markup the cost of the food, charge fees, and after you finally make it to the payment page, you find out your order of wings and fries are going to cost $50 and than they ask for a tip on top of that. There's been many times I get to that final page and decide it's not worth it and just eat at home or take the drive myself. I could spend the same amount and have "hot" food with a couple beers and some fun.
    With our current technology food deliveries should be done with drones with a very small delivery fee.

    DD keeps scheming to keep more of our pay while keeping the lion's share for themselves and the shareholders. We're the ones doing the actual work but their main concern is to pay the bare minimum while charging the customers the max. I can see how customers would be mad being charged a delivery fee and then being asked to pay another 'delivery' fee: the tip. Customers feel ripped off and that leads to animosity. Of course they resent the tip guilt trip! DD is paying less and less and I don't know who is taking all these super crappy orders.

    Doordash is only shooting themselves in the foot, by lowering base pay for drivers. If they let the base pay drop to a dollar, they should expect fewer drivers on the road.
    This video should be shared all across the internet, so that customers of Doordash can really know what's going on within the system.
    Drivers of Doordash are anything but greedy. It cost time and money for drivers to deliver those orders. Fair compensation is what drivers want.

From the customer's perspective they have alreayd paid for the delivery service. And as employees DD should take care of them better. Tipping should be seen as a bonus, not base pay.

    0:35 DD needs to make them choose a 15% minimum tip amount or else not be allowed to place their order. And DD obviously needs to raise the base pay up to at least $3. Refusing to pay us and how about we start advocating for laws to get past? Because it's clear they're never gonna pay better until the law forces them. And they're gonna go kicking and screaming. But for the love of God, please don't blame the customer. It's not their fault, they should not have to tip us. We should be paid enough that we don't need a tip. If you basically wanna force it, then just then then stop calling it a tip. And it's called automatic Gratituity like some businesses. They sre gonna charge more if they want tk charge more regardless of paying the drivers better. And again if that's a thing just put a cap on because that's all the law has to do is legally put a cap on it. They are simply gonna be greedy if we let them be. There only getting away with it because the law hasn't caught up and bet set in stone for this kind of work. Have the fees in california increase due to prop twenty two. And again their nothing stopping law being passed to prevent it or just have x % of fees going to the drivers. Regardless of the type of whether it's a regular job or gig job, they don't wanna. They will pay as little as they legally possibly have to if they can get away with largely. Sure you find some examples Here in there that may not be the Case, but by enlarged. Most companies wanna have it cheap of labor cost is possible. Hence why there's minimum wage laws in other stuff. Because I guarantee you now. Paying half as well without these laws and place Since companies like doordash and and whatever they get company are getting this work done at the cheap labor cost that they are. And they're just simply trying to offload the cost to the customer.

    I love the argument, from foreigners, that "no tipping is required in my country". Well, you're not there... you're here, and this is OUR culture whether you agree or not. You would want us to absorb and not disrespect your culture when we're there would you. The argument I can't stand, is people saying, "it's not my responsibility to subsidize your pay, it's the company". I don't argue the base pay should be better, but you're wrong in saying that. When you order online and want "priority" mailing...you pay more, right? Think of that extra you pay as a guarantee to get your package faster. You're tip is EXACTLY that. Now, people will still want to argue about the company needs to pay us more, but the same can be said for the UPS, FedEx, Amazon drivers. Trouble is, if they do increase the driver pay, where do you think that cost difference is going to come from? It's going to come from you anyway, in the form of higher prices for services. If you tip food guys properly, there would be no need for that, PLUS AN ADDED BONUS, you'll get your food hot and fast. And remember, drivers get paid less than servers, yet you tip them appropriately, right? Yes, we're not running around from table to table, but we are running around from house to house, restaurant to restaurant, bad drivers to bad drivers because YOU YOURSELF don't want to deal with the headache of traffic and pick up... otherwise you would've just went out to eat and got served on instead at a restaurant.

    Customers think drivers get paid well .
    Those companies listed below have a totally different pay structures then an independent contractor who is contracted by the gig company to do their delivery for their companiy.
    They think, independent contractor get a guaranteed hourly wage or guaranteed yearly salary like the companies listed below:
    DHL , UPS, USPS, FEDEX, and AMAZON and don't understand what the big fuss is about over tipping. .
    Why they should tip more since they paid more in fees then they want to.
    Some customers are getting upset because they feel the pressure on them to either tip more or don't tip at all.
    They are right, they already pay the necessary fees and it's the gig companies duty to make sure their delivery drivers get paid well for their service, not shift that responsibility to the customers when they already paid for their share of the fees for the service.

    • @motleyassortment5512
      @motleyassortment5512 9 месяцев назад

      The way things are structured, the driver suffer and the customer also feel the pressure.
      The more you nag the less likely they will tip.
      Best thing to do is to find another more reliable stream of income , 2 , 3, or 4 then you don't have to rely on gig to make extra income and you don't have to play their games.
      Sooner or later, drivers will get fed up with the pay structure and start leaving .
      Without drivers to complete customer's order, they will have to raise the base pay.
      It will result in too much demand and not enough drivers.
