O maintenance tech here, (30 yrs.). Industry has been using stainless fasteners (bolts) on aluminum for years. The reason is, stainless is an alloy lacking iron which is the part that oxidizes (rust). Your boat will be just fine with stainless. Also my wife works at Excel boat mfg. I've kinda got the inside scoop. 😏
My boat is a 1986 15ft grunman. Needed a ton of work. Been an awesome build though. Finishing up the inside and electrical now. Your videos are hilarious and have helped a ton. Thank you.
My friend has an old 20’ Starcraft I made a transom out of 1/2” plate aluminum on our plasma table. Just an idea for next time you don’t see those everyday
@@SendItJonBoats essentially, they gall something fierce. The alum will smear into the ss and never separate. Likely, one reason anti seize was invented lol...cuz some engineer insisted on the two metals in some bizarre application. Great vids, BTW 👍
@@SendItJonBoats just remember the 3 Bs. If you didn’t break it bend it or blow it up when you sent it, well you didn’t really send it !!! Nice boat build BTW
So, a year has passed............ How did the Transom Brace anchorage to the floor hold up? Did the phillips head screws create a drag on the bottom of the boat? ( 6:02) and most importantly, did it stay water tight?,,,,, I held off waiting till this winter to address my bad rivets at those particuar anchor points.
They actually came with my boat. They appeared to be original to the boat from 1979.... but they still worked great! if you need some custom ones made reach out to Nates Custom Boats, he is a channel sponsor and makes awesome custom boat stuff. Tell him I sent you.
There’s about $150 worth of stainless bolts in my aluminum boat. My 35 year old boat was used in saltwater before I bought it, and if my stainless bolts do any worse than the saltwater did around the old floatation foam, I’ll eat my words, but I highly doubt they ever could.
I would use a nylon board. For sure to last a couple lifetimes (depending on the bolt material lol) I'm a fan of your channel, not a Stacey, a Rodney, or a Scooter lol. SEND IT!!!
Did you build the support system you installed at 3:30? If so, is it steel or aluminum? I really need to add that system to the back of my 1966 Monark. EDIT: I just saw your transom support build video. That's a very strong looking transom. I think I'll try to build a similar support system out of aluminum stock. Thanks for your videos!
I’ve been trying to come up with a plan to make a ultra light transom with 1/8th or 1/4 plate aluminum and aluminum “studs” 4” on center except for where motor mounts would go probably 2” centers. Not sure if it would work or not
when mounting the new transom do you really need to use washers on the outside of the hull . Would a bead 4200/5200 on the end of the bolt not be enough
Love the videos! I'm in Bay City MI where its only above 80 about 2 months a year, If you could send some warm weather it would be much appreciated. I have a 1648 jon and boat thanks to all your videos and TB nation I plan on rebuilding my boat and make an awesome duck boat. A build I'd like to see you tackle. My question is in regards to the transom. My transom is a prefab 45' piece of folded aluminum that is rivited to the floor and transom. I will need to cut it out and replace it with two knee braces. I plan on duplicating your design to strengthen the entire back end. Do you know where I can find the knee braces? I have scoured the interwebs with no luck. Thanks again for all the videos and info.
I have a DC mig/tig machine with spool gun for aluminum also. I just dont have it set up right now and I need to go get bottles filled. Been a while since I was serious into welding so I am working on getting back into it again.
When you go to Home depot, lowes etc, underneath the stainless bolts/screws/nuts/washers it actually says "for marine use"...idk what everyone's Flippin out about
Yes I used plywood, did you even watch the video where I showed what plywood I used and the entire video was literally me making the transom out of ply! I am not aware of any laws that require a boat transom to be made of wood at all.
@@SendItJonBoats just curious because that's what I was told by a Iowa DNR officer. Maybe it was just his requirement for signing off on the boat idk. Thanks though
Use aluminum flat stock and and 1/4 inch aluminum plates weld the the bar's tested fit your angle before having welded you can get materials at Lowes or home depot
Yup, There is no finished product yet... everything is in the works, plus these videos were from over a year ago on my other channel and I had no idea I would be eventually making a jon boat channel. Newer videos will be much better now that I know what direction we are going.
I must’ve missed something I thought you said you were in Louisiana not that it matters. You keep saying pollen season in Georgia. Oh my God you can’t mix stainless steel with aluminum ha ha ha ha I want to be special

Nice 👍👍. Do you sell stickers or decals with your logo on them?
Awesome videos. I am just finishing up my transom. Thanks for the inspiration 👍🏻👊🏻
Awesome! Good luck on your build!

Yee Yee! We need to get a big ol unicorn float to tow around

Thats a good idea. Maybe by the time my next build is ready I will have my aluminum welding stuff set up and try that out.
I found a inner braced 1/2” piece of aluminum. Stronger than plywood yet much lighter
Thank you
Glad I could help
Send it !! Love it..
Heck Yeah YEE YEE! Send It!
I was really hoping to see how the brace was made.
They came on the boat, I did not make them
Shout out to ya from a Georgia boy.
YEE YEE!!!! What up Georgia boy! Glad to have you, thanks for checking out the video.
Just a suggestion use nylon lock nuts just added protection
Good idea, I didnt even think of that.
Amazing!!!
stainless coupled with alum fasteners is bad. they rust weld each other. but for these applications? PERFECT!!
I have never seen stainless or aluminum rust and I don't even know what rust welding is but I will google that!

I've worked on super yachts and if he's sealing with 5200 , there won't be any problem. It's insulated between the dissimilar metals.
Have you ever tried aluminum bolts? I'm curious on how strong they are
If that transom isn’t flexing your motor isn’t big enough!
LOL, we working on it... need to flex it soon!

Exactly. glad you have firsthand experience to tell the keyboard warriors how it really is
where can I get those supports
You would have to make them. No body sells those. They came with the boat.
Where's your merch link ... need one of those tshirts
Don't have one yet... guess I need to get on that asap!
Sorry to bother you quick question on your video. what sizes bolts did you use to go through the floor to hold the brace for the transom?
I believe they were 1/4 20 if I remember correctly.
Why did you not paint the wood first?
I would use a nylon board. For sure to last a couple lifetimes (depending on the bolt material lol) I'm a fan of your channel, not a Stacey, a Rodney, or a Scooter lol. SEND IT!!!
LOL, wood was cheap and easy. it will last long enough for me to use it for a while till I upgrade to a bigger boat.

I’ve been trying to come up with a plan to make a ultra light transom with 1/8th or 1/4 plate aluminum and aluminum “studs” 4” on center except for where motor mounts would go probably 2” centers. Not sure if it would work or not
Yes sir it can be done and I have seen it quite a few times. My next transom will be all aluminum once I get my new welder set up.
@@SendItJonBoats say , I'm preparing to replace the transom on my 17 foot aluminum craft boat , what should be the total thickness of the plywood 🤔
My transom weighs a ton lol. Big ol 1/2” aluminum plate on the outside with the new wood transom inside the hull.
when mounting the new transom do you really need to use washers on the outside of the hull . Would a bead 4200/5200 on the end of the bolt not be enough
Washers are just extra protection from the bolt pulling through.
Where did you get those mounts from the floor to the transon?
Came with the boat.
Where can I buy those two brackets...transom to floor. Thank you.
They came with the boat. I do not think anyone makes them anymore.
Where did you get those knee braces ?
They came with the boat.
How thick of a piece of wood did you use there for the transom?
to 3/4 inch pieces, that makes about an inch and a half.
Where did you get the braces
came with the boat.

What’d you coat that plywood with?
Did a video on it, fiberglass resin
Can I use zinc screws with the rubber to screw in my wood on the transom ?
No, only use stainless. Zinc will corrode and rust over time, trust me I have made that mistake before.
Did you use plywood for the transom? I thought it had to be solid hard wood like oak. At least that's what a DNR officer told me when I redid a boat
