What I have discovered with my ID.3 1st Max and its Matrix headlights is that if you a middle fence/ lane divider the in coming detection works very poorly as the fence blocked the camera view somewhat. Also, when it is snowing or raining in certain way it doesn’t work as well. But those are expected. Still it was embarrassing when I just plain forgot the high beams on and the weather conditions changed rapidly and I ended blinding some other driver thinking “why are they flashing their lights?” 😂
Once you get used to matrix headlights and auto high beams it’s very difficult to go back and VW has implemented those so well that it makes changing a brand very difficult as well.

1: Fog lights and side light during turning at low speed:
They are made of the exact same lights named as cornering light as per European Regulation No 119.
Here the "Fog lights" is actually replaced by the All Weather light, which turns on the low beam as well as both the cornering light, actually you see similar behavior when you select gear to Reverse.
2: About the range issue with the low beam of Id.7:
The initial inclination angle of the cut-off line at factory is too high:
A correctly adjusted low beam installed at 70 centimeters above the ground should be able to illuminate distance up to 70 meters for the major cur-off line, however it is about 30~40 meters in the case of Id.7.
The root cause of this issue is the change of headlight supplier(from Marelli to Valeo) and the Valeo implements a new optic design for Id.7.
Other than the high inclination angle, the low beam of Id.7 has high, narrow and dim left/right shoulder compared to other Id models with IQ light, and this drastically reduces illuminated area of the low beam of Id.7.
To solve the problem, adjust the inclination angle to around 1.5~1.0 degree using a hexagon key, but do not reduce it too much, it will make the low beam dazzling to other road users.
3: About the automatic matrix beam (ADB light):
The high beam seems not as bright as Id.4/Id.5 even with the supplementary high beam enabled, however you could find the area it illuminates gets much larger.
When you take both(brightness and illumination area) into consideration, you will find this high beam very powerful, it is only 20% less than the HD-Matrix high beam in Porsche's newest Cayenne in terms of Luminous flux(2000 lumens of high beam at each side headlight unit for Id.7, 2500 lumen for Cayenne).

very useful info, where did you get all this info? been trying to look at how bright these headlights are but havent found any measurements

    • @oijhhytdirhrbru

@@viccao8431 I can give you a reference figure: the brightest point of direction(maximum luminous intensity point) is measured at around 160,000 cd when the high beam(both the matrix beam and the spotlight beam) is on.
The 160,000 cd means it will be 1 lux at 400 meters away.
This maximum brightness is pretty decent at 40% of the legal upper limit of driving beam. Only a few are designed to be close to the limit(eg. EQS, A8 with laser spotlight variant).
so what does it mean along with the decent luminous flux output(2000 lumens)?
The answer is very excellent illumination area: this high beam illuminates a very large angle. The effective angle is even larger as the beam turns horizontally when steering.
The high beam of id4 is actually brighter, with the brightest point at 200,000 cd, however its illuminating area is somewhat smaller.
There are several drawbacks on id7's low beam, making it illuminates quite near:
1,weird shape of cut-off line especially at the "kink"(at the center of view, where the cut-off line suddenly turns higher).
The kink is dim, short in horizontal direction.
Those who equips the pixel headlight(eqs, tiguan gen3, passat B9) also have similar short kink issues, but none of them are dim.
2, Suboptimal initial adjust of inclination (of the cut-off line).
3, The low beam itself is not as bright as other premium headlights of Volkswagen, due to the flat shape(optical efficiency reduced) of the lens for id.7's low beam.
You can refer to Bjorn's review:
id4: It's high beam is significantly brighter than its better-than-id7 low beam
      ruclips.net/video/jQ2N1rij6JM/видео.html
EQS: keep an eye to the spotlight high beam in the center, which helps the brightness in that direction reach almost the legal limit.

@@oijhhytdirhrbru wow that’s amazing information. Where did you get all these measurements? I’m really into lighting and would love to learn more. I currently have a 2020 Q7 with matrix lights (not laser), do you have any info on the brightness of it? I think they are pretty bright and very useful with the matrix feature. I’m curious if Porsches hd matrix is better than Audis matrix with laser.

@@viccao8431 I measured it myself with the methods from UN R149(of course much simplified). It seems Q7 MY2020 is the facelift Q7 gen3, thus I believe it is a very excellent headlight, just like its E-segment sisters Q8, A7, A6, with their top tier headlights.
Porsche has released some figures about its microLED based pixel headlight with newest Cayenne, 2500 lumen for high beam as mentioned before(1400 lumen from the two microLED pixel lights, and 1100 lumen from the additional conventional LED high beam). Porsche claims "The 65,536 LEDs of the two Cayenne headlights illuminate the darkness for a distance of up to 600 meters". If the statement was technically precise, it could then guess it was saying "(1 lux at) 600 meters", then the brightest spot of that headlight would be around 600 meter * 600 meter * 1lux = 360,000 cd, which would be pretty close to the legal limit of 430,000 cd, when all four high beam modules of both sides were turned on.
Review of similar HD matrix headlight from Q8:
You can find that visually the laser spotlight module does almost nothing, though it does add a lot of luminous intensity in the center of view(remember the equation of meter * meter * illuminance = Luminous intensity above, where the illuminance is proportional to how much brightness an item is illuminated. And we human beings are visually logarithmic, that it does not make much sense to double the brightness):

Note that exposure of the second footage is quite low.

@@viccao8431 I would like to suggest watch headlight reviews from @bjornnyland, @motoreport_, @roadblogcz and others, illustration video from headlight manufacturers/car makers, and compare your impression with the illuminating modes/figures from regulations. If possible, academic journals about designing headlight modules would be.
I measured it myself using methods from R149(of course much simplified).
Porsche's headlight on latest Cayenne has Four high beam modules, half of them are microLED based(32, 768 light segments each), providing 1,400 lumen, and the other half are conventional LED high beam with 1,100 lumen.
Porsche claims "The 65,536 LEDs of the two Cayenne headlights illuminate the darkness for a distance of up to 600 meters and provide a pleasantly wide field of light.", if the figure 600 meter was technically precise, then the sentence would actually be meaning "when all the high beam modules are turned or, the illuminance at 600 meters away would be as much as 1 lux", which means the Luminous intensity of the brightest direction of the high beam would be 600 meters * 600 meters * 1 lux = 360,000 cd, which would be pretty close to the legal limit of 430,000 cd.
Note that the legal limit at north America is about a third of European's.
Matrix headlight from Tiguan Gen2 facelift by Marelli AL

the 3-row matrix headlight from Mercedes S class W222 facelift:
      ruclips.net/video/x3cmLmS_KMs/видео.html
Note at 2:26, if you ever read the AFS chapter of UN R149, you can find it actually shows how a W-class passing beam is made of, and you can understand why seldom car models implement the W-class passing beam, and instead everyone approaches for other lighting solutions(mostly by turning on the cornering lights) for adverse weather

VWs IQ lights pretty much always blind me at highway, especially if they are 150m behind me in same direction. Constantly flickering into my mirrors. They are slow to responce and cut window is is where the car was nor where the car is. This video also prove they are slow to response. At timestamp 15:41, at playback speed 0.25x you can clearly sea that lights go back on when first car past by and second car passanger were blast with full beam, third car even worst. In my opinion VW lights are very agressive and they are slow and anoing for other cars on the roads.

That is one of the reasons why US gov hesitated to adopt ADB headlight into their vehicle regulations. Maybe the 3rd generation, which is to say pixel headlight with more advanced cameras(with more pixels, higher sensitivity) and other kind of sensors(Lidar, 4D-mmWave Radar), can solve this issue once for all.

    • @Dmaoa
      @Dmaoa 18 дней назад

@@oijhhytdirhrbruthats not the reason. Thats just what they say. If they really cared about blinding, they wouldnt allow retrofit LEDs in the u s., they woukdnt allow lifted trucks, they wouldnt allow a lot of things. But they dont care. They just have an ancient regulation code which they dont change. They allow combined brake + turn light, but use the ancient turn signal LAMP AREA regulation, which doesnt allow e.g. bmw 3 series orange turn signals which doesnt have enough surface area. Well surface area might have been relevant with old bulbs, but with new taillight they can have a bright strip and exceed light output minimum requirement. Which they do. But doesnt meet surface area req. Go figure...

So. Many. Freakin'. Settings. No wonder that they have had so many problems with software when you see how overworked it is. Why not just keep it simple? 99% of those adjustment will be made in the first month of ownership never to be touched again after that. Also, all those capacitive buttons are so annoying and seeing you use them just confirms how impractical they are. Those Matrix headlights looks sweet though and seems to work really well.
