What a creative design, use a flex washer to offer some 'give' to the system, so applied torque reaches a plateau. That would also reduce the chance of early bearing failure when the assembly robots ovetorque to align cotter pin holes. Cool.
All european cars have used this design for decades now....You americans are behind the times with car tech chum lol

@@NLJ1953 No actually..... The bellville washer was invented by a French man over a hundred years ago... but as it goes with automotive applications was used on Peugeot and citroen cars before Korean cars were even on the market in Europe!!!
The absolute best auto repair channel on youtube. Real world examples. Cars rust and you have to deal with it. Much more useful than the channels that work on new cars or on cars that were taken apart, put back together and then filmed. Love it.

I'm an ex army mechanic who went into teaching and that is one of the issues with the lockdown and parents.Kids lie easily and often because everything is immediate to them with very little thought of the future.We spend years getting used to the ways they use to get out of work. Keep the faith, do the best you can, dont let it get you down..

If there is a problem with a kid, I look at the parent....My daughter is married , 24 and she still asks permission if she visits, to use our things or eat our food.

Thanks for takin the time to bring us along Eric, it is appreciated. Living in a remote-ish part of the Scottish Borders I see a fair bit of rust, but that is another level, think I’d be pissed working on that crud everyday.
Great video series so far with the Santa Fe, it brings back some memories from when I was a parts guy at a Hyundai dealership. That body style of Santa Fe starting in 2007 had known issues with rear hub & bearings. There's a dust shield that supposed to cover and protect the side of the bearing, but the ones that were put on in the factory had a gap that allowed dirt, grit and crud to get in and destroy the bearing. They were also prone to front sway bar links wearing out, fuel level sending units failing (they have two) and rear differential coupling units seizing. Very popular vehicles though!

Yes, experiencing those exact issues on my rusty/crusty 220K 2007 Santa Fe, I have two of them , one I purchased new and am the original owner, and both have fuel level sending unit go bad plus the rust issues. however, one of them is a manual 5 speed !
Hi European Santa fe 2007 4WD owner here, at 200.000+ Miles I have changed sway bar bushes and rear hubs at 250.000 miles..No major issues if you wash and take care of your car.
just a returned free tip friday, if you remove the 4 differential mounting bolts and let it down the whole way no suspension removal is needed to gain access to the wheel bearing bolts. much faster and easier. as always keep up the great videos.
I was told years ago that the clips/screws on the rotors and drums are installed to prevent them from falling off while the vehicle was moving down the assembly line
Thank you for being awesome that short cut was perfect! I took off the lower A frame ,shock and trailing arm and I got the axle out of the way to get to the 4 bolts holding on the bearings in and tapped it out with hammer. Thank you for being awesome. I use PB blaster too spray on the bolts
Not sure how many of these comments you read, but I want to sincerely thank you for these videos. I've gone from knowing absolutely nothing to knowing a little about maintenance and repair :). I even went out and bought some tools! Who knows? Maybe one day I will even use them. Thanks again. You've got a friend on Long Island.
That convex washer for the castle nut is like a crush washer on a muzzle device. Pretty smart design, I think.
I love that you take the adage that anything is a hammer depending on how hard you want to swing it to heart. Pliers, airtools, screwdrivers, sockets, ratchets; I think I've seen you use everything.
Yeah I think it was "Every tool has a hammer side, even a hammer". Sort of related to "Don't know which end of screwdriver to hit a nail with".
Working on my Santa Fe that back rotor getting off was a nightmare on mind too!!!!also working on cars with a lift compared to from the ground,like a lot more satisfying!!
I've done brakes a bunch myself over the years, but I always enjoy your videos. I live in upstate South Carolina and I am fascinated by all the crusty rust in your vehicles! Cars don't rust very much around here.

That is an old saying, every mechanic whether auto, truck, or heavy equipment, everywhere can appreciate and uses.
Always a pleasure to see the special rust wrench being put to good use.
That domed washer is called a Belleville washer or spring. They can be used stacked to give higher or lower spring rates depending on how they're stacked - alternating way round gives lower, same way gives higher.

I went through half my life not knowing how to use a "ball-peen" hammer. When using an expanding fastener, you put the ball on the fastener, then hit the face of the "ball-peen" hammer with a second hammer. I don't doubt there are many occasions when this little bit of knowledge would be useful.
Losing a car to get Mrs "O" sounds like a win to me...I'll bet she will last a lot longer.

Always good to see another video where Mr O is kicking the crust buckets tail!!!!! Always good to see big NASTY!! I been wanting one for a while. At 20:20 on them actuators we use muriatic acid. Just dunk them for 15 min and wash off with water to neutralize the acid. Gloves mandatory. Frees em up like a charm. Cleans all rusty parts fast!

Hey Eric, a small tip for you. I always use some lock wire to pull the cable clamp fully back and time it below the parking cable mount. Install the cable end then remove the lock wire. Occasionally a piece of lock wire gets stuck under the arm, its a small piece and it will fall out on its own.
Greetings from Europe, I live in France and I have a 2007 Sante Fe wonderful SUV if you take care of it. No salty roads and wash car underneath, no rust ! Tires and disks may last easily 100.000 miles. I have seen Santa fe make up to 500 000 Kms (400 000 miles) with no major issues. My rear hubs are OEM mounted and now I have to change them both at nearly 300 000Kms. I have only changed disks and pads so far :D

I Just did the same on my 2009 Sonata. Those dust shields, backing plates are expensive (130.00ea) but necessary and a dealer item only. Nice job with the videos too. I always check to see if there’s a time saver video prior to starting a pain in the A job. Thanks again
I just went through all of this, knowing my '11 SF GLS needed backing plates and the complete parking brake assemblies on both sides. I originally sent it in last week and had to rebook it a week later because the axles were seized in both hubs. The shop wanted to have new hubs and axles on hand in case they destroyed the originals, plus he is one of the busier and well known to be trusted shops in our small area (Windsor, Nova Scotia, higher up in the rust belt). Over the summer, I ordered two complete backing plates (OEM Hyundai parts) that included everything including the actuator. My AC also died in the spring, so I ordered a compressor and condenser from Rockauto. I should have added two wheel bearings/hubs and two rear axles, because in the end, they had to be pulled from the differential as one assembly, they were seized that bad, and I had to pay for the overpriced local parts from the shop that did the work. This was after I had the drivers side apart about a month ago, trying to replace the parts myself. I failed miserably, mind you, I don't have a hoist, and most of the work was done on my 44 year old, construction-abused knees, and I didn't have nearly enough leverage, even with a breaker bar, to get some of the fasteners loose. It ended up costing me alot more than I had planned on spending, but at least now it has a new 2 year MVI sticker on it and working AC, and the parts they bought are lifetime warrantied. What frustrates me is given the right shop to work out of, I have the ability and tools to complete the work, which typically saves me a lot of money. However, all I have is an attached garage, which, granted I can do basic stuff like oil changes, brake work, and tire/wheel swap-overs. 2 years out of high school, I had completed a basic MVR mechanical course at the local community college and started working at a small Ford dealership in our local town. However, I was only 18 when I started that job, and the shop foreman was a prick, who clearly had a dislike for me. I only worked there for 9 months, and I did learn quite a bit. But I ended up going back to construction work with my father after being laid off in the winter.
All this rust makes me so glad I moved south. So many years spent working on the family's rusted cars. So much money needlessly lost having to replace said cars that ran great yet were so rusted they were dangerous.
Wish you'd done this video about three weeks ago, so I could've watched it before I did this same exact job on my Elantra. At least it was gratifying to see that I'm not the only one who struggles with getting parking brake shoes on, or to get the hub lined up with its bolts.

You do good work Eric. Thanks for giving me the confidence to finally tackle my moms old car. Rusty grand am up here in Canada. Two seized sliders, two ground down caliper bracket bolts, two piston rebuilds, two wheel cylinders, and all new hardware, and 1 new line, and that thing stops like a dime :) Nice safe ride for my mom to finish the summer with, until the rust finishes eating it alive.

i have a 03 Santa fe i had to do a front axle and had to take everything off and use a 20ton press to remove the hub and i had to get creative to get the other end of the axle off. the splines had all kids of rust in there the 20ton press had a work out. i still have to replace something like the spindle and do a new wheel bring and hub. the rust for the up of Michigan and the northern part of the lower part of Michigan. and doing all four breaks on it was a joy, but one going thing all the slide pins moved free. i was surprised of that

Thank God 🙏 for fluid film. I coat all my cars undercarriage twice a year and not even my winter daily which is a 1995 Toyota Camry looks nothing close to that rust bucket.

On an information sharing note - that axle washer can be referred to as a spring washer - unless Hyundai calls it something else which is always possible.... LOL Eric great video as always !!!

Proof that leaving all the issues on a car until the last minute means one big repair bill instead of smaller ones :) - personally I couldn't drive something that rough for that long - bet that Hyundai drives so smooth now! Turning the key on my Subaru has become an act of faith. As the engine grumbles to life on this fine New York morning, the yellow check engine comes on , as it has everyday for the past three years, and the same questions swirl in my mine. Is this the day that tiny head gasket leak turns into a gusher? Is this the day that the catalytic converter chokes closed for good? Is this the day that one speck of sand too many works it's way into the cracked CV joint boot, causing it to seize up at some bend in the road and send me spinning into a ravine, not to be discovered until spring?
I intimately know everything wrong with this car, I feel the squishy brakes and the engine straining to get up a hill, and I hear the ominous grinding sounds coming from under the right front wheel well. But I can't afford to do anything about it to ward off those looming disasters.
And I am not the only one, there are a lot of folks in this predicament.
Page 60 of the June 2020 edition of Car and Driver would like a word.

Living in New Mexico I buy old cars that are rust free all the time. Have too many of them. I usually pay $1200 for a mechanically clean example that just needs some tlc and minor items addressed.
Getting that first caliper off ....just like back in high school....Hehehehe.

Man, if an inspector at the "Dept of main roads" here in Aus sees a bit of surface rust ANYWHERE on a vehicle they have kittens for days.
We call it the "roadworthy kit". 4 tins of Degreaser, silicon spray, and 3 tins of gloss black spray paint.
Is only a problem east of the Rocky Mountains. I was a mechanic in California and never had to deal with rust like that, except on a few cars that came from the east. If I grew up east of the Rockies, I would have become an electrician.

@Samuel Lim999 Oh, I'm well aware of why it is so. It's just amazing to see the differences in organisations.
Same goes with your police, you get pulled up on a bike or car over there, often just have a chat with the officer, get a verbal warning and you're on your way. Over here, you get pulled up by a pig, you're getting a ticket, period. The only question is how many ticket's you're gonna get.
There are areas west of the mountains that have bad rust problems, anywhere near the
coast of Washington state, onshore flow of salt air and you have serious rust, I've had
to fix all manufacturers frames with fish plates and channel, so it's not just in the east,
I grew up in Toronto, and watched my first car dissolve...
