Im 48 years old and i always loved to watch my dad work as he was a mechanic til he retired and i remember when his 1970 MONTE CARLO was running a little rough he would just take a pack of matches and set the points with them and like magic it was running smooth as silk again. Amazing how much has changed since then and how many different things need to be done on modern vehicles to acheive the same results. My dad is retired so now i spend time enjoying watching you now.

      @@thevinceberry
I'm pretty sure that RockAuto is only a warehouse and shipping entity. If you've gotten fake parts from them it could be that whoever is supplying pulled one over on them or actually took over the aftermarket. There's been a lot of super cheap crap replacing what used to be good brand named stuff as Eric mentioned. Moog and a few others used to be incredibly good quality but today are actually worse than some of the other alternatives. That's a damn shame. On incredibly critical components or on parts that require a lot of Labor to get replaced I'm leaning more towards going to the dealer and getting OEM. And sometimes the OEM price isn't that much more.
I've got a 2013 Toyota that has drum brakes on the rear. And all of the aftermarket drums I found at O'Reilly we're not manufactured correctly. They are hubcentric not lug Centric. And the center hub diameter was machined too large enough that it made the drum off-centered and this particular car does not have the small retaining bolts to hold the drum in place while you're assembling it. So I ended up having a pulsation while breaking and took me a while to figure out why. And that ended up being the cause. Took them back tried a different set had the same problem. Went to the Toyota dealer to the dial Caliper with me and measured the new ones from Toyota versus the factory ones that were on the car and they were spot on. They were also double the price. But it doesn't matter if it's a good price if they don't work.
Was the second gen Prius 2004 to 2009 so if you know anybody with one of those that wants drums replaced on the rear don't screw with the aftermarket you'll end up chasing a brake pulsation that you can't figure out the cause of

Thanks for the tip Mr. O, I almost re-used a strut bearing to replace a muffler bearing with a cracked race. It was a near-perfect fit, too. You're right though, that plastic would be a problem because of the heat. I'm talking about the main bearing of course, right behind the manifold injector. Those will get over 900F under sustained load.
P.S. Thank you also for the shout-out on the alignments and breaking bolts loose! If I put a set of tires on and I know I'm gonna align it, I soak the adjusters after I take the wheels off, then break everything loose when I come back with the fresh rubber. If I don't take ten minutes breaking one bolt loose under the car, I have more time to get camber/caster right, grease fittings, etc.
38:50 Shoot, that's a John Bean aligner from Snap-On... I hope Mr. O's is more consistent than mine! I work in a corporate shop, and our district got to be the guinea pig for some of these. V3300/V3400, what a piece. (facepalm emoji)

I'm trying to get out of working on my own cars (having Toyotas in an environment where the roads are not salted helps.) The strut compressor reminded of my very early days of DIY, when I had to replace a strut. I couldn't get ahold of a hand-held strut compressor so I bought a dozen muffler clamps and placed the along the spring all around. I was all gansta until I held it just a _bit_ wrong and all the clamps zinged around to one side.

Beautiful town you live in Eric. Great houses, love the U.S. flags everywhere. One question - why are U.S. roads in such poor condition? America is great at so much, but the condition of your roads is horrendous.

When you turned the top of the strut to release the plunger it reminded me of a buddy of mine I worked with. He was putting struts in car and couldn’t get the strut to expand. He had it in a vice and was tugging and pulling and tugging on it and couldn’t get it to expand. I told him to feed it taters and after fighting it for a few minutes I felt sorry for the guy and walked over and turned the shaft a quarter turn and it released and expanded by itself. We got a good laugh that day.

I've always wondered if strut bearings and muffler bearings were interchangeable. Today I learned. I still wonder, though, since a strut bearing has plastic in it, you obviously can't use it as a muffler bearing - it would melt - but in a pinch, could you use an all-metal muffler bearing as a strut bearing?

You took the safest route. I always purchase the quick strut (full assembly). Compressing springs with janky spring compressors is not worth the risk for a DIY, shade tree mechanic. Just spend the little extra and buy the whole setup. Go search on RUclips for videos of spring compressors letting go. Gives you a really good idea of how badly you can get injured.

im just clearing my backlog but 34:10 YES, ERIC YOU GET ME, IM HAPPY!
for the common denominator tho, i mean yes it kinda is my job to deal with that, but by things loosened you actually speed my work by A LOT.... you have no idea how many times i had to actually use to torch at the allignment machine or adjust tensioning bars because the casters are off and i have to use a wrench and the largest metal pipe that will fit under the lift... praying i wont be busting my knuckles swearing all over the place... specially control arms that you have to torque till your wrist cant handle it and i have to loosen them again to have the thing go straight...
so yes ill love you and ill go the extra mile to do the "perfectionist" allignment on your car for actually giving me the time savings to do that....
