My uncle spent his entire life after high school working at a Chevy dealership (50 plus years). I know you're not a Chevy fan but I'll never forget his words. A 4 cylinders life expectancy is 90k. A 6 cylinders life expectancy is 120k. an 8 cylinders life expectancy can be 300k plus if you take care of it. I've also witnessed identical blocks with equivalent mileage and maintained except different oil was used. So the moral of the story is not all oils are the same and that a well maintained Chevy V8 can in fact have a long and healthy life. Love your videos thanks for doing them!

For 247k that Chevy looks and actually runs pretty good! Definitely worth fixing the weird stuff T.C. and diff stuff. Can't wait to see what the mystery is with the switch.
My local mechanic calls that torque reaction from the engine the engine dance. Based on the video, that engine was certainly dancing for gold. Always nice to see Mrs O as well! She secretly probably does better burnouts than most pro racing drivers and she is just being humble for the camera haha.
I had a friend who had a '68 Mustang with a bad motor mount. When it popped up it would bind the solid linkage from the pedal to the Carb. With drum brakes at all 4 corners that's the only time I've ever experienced true "unintended acceleration". Henry Ford famously hated hydraulic brakes at first and touted "All metal from pedal to wheel". Just a fun fact from a guy who loves classic Mustangs but dailies a 4Runner approaching 500K miles. ;)
I AM NOT A CAR GUY. Meaning, I am glad I am not a mechanic, however, I pick up quite a of info just watching you go thru all your steps. I would certainly bring my vehicles to you to fix something. Thank you for the great video.
That TCCM switch gets feedback from the ECU reporting the position of the transfer case, dumping it (output) to the LED outputs which are independent of the switch position, which is an input. The majority of manufacturers of this junk use this system or something similar.
At 10:55 you can hear something try to actuate when turning to 4L, so my guess is the switch is fine. I bet some actuator or other moving part isn't going into the correct position (or a position/limit switch has failed) and the control module isn't happy with what it's seeing.
Yep, defiantly a possibility that the transfer case is shot too, piece if something broke inside and won’t allow it to mechanically move into 4L and satisfy the computer
I've had a similar condition with a GM 2-speed transfer case not going into 4WD, turned out the diff fluid was low. So in your Tahoe case I'd first replace the unit and then see if 4WD fully functions before replacing any switch or module.
My first thought is that the “Off” is the scan tool not knowing what 4L is. The voltage is correct, so the switch looks like it is doing its thing. To prove it, I would disconnect the switch and inject 1.5V into the connector and see if the live data shows anything different.
@@Sicktrickintuner If it doesn't have the current it won't hit the correct voltage. It does have the correct voltage so it HAS to have the necessary current assuming the load end of the circuit is not disconnected. Since different voltages are used to signal to the transfer case computer the desired mode and all the different voltages are on the same wire to the transfer case computer and the transfer case works in all modes except 4-Lo I am inclined to think that the switch is OK and the control wiring between the switch and the transfer case control computer is OK. One question is WHERE is that voltage being measured and the scan tool does not tell you that. I am thinking the issue might be that the 4-Lo light/LED is burned out or has a bad connection back to the transfer case computer. If I was doing the diag on this I would try to determine if the transfer case is actually going into 4-Lo. Now that the front half shafts have been knocked back in take it out on the road and see if there is a difference in road speed VS engine RPM between 4-Hi and 4-Lo. If there is, then the transfer case is going into 4-LO and is probably OK and the lack of indication on the switch is a problem in the light circuit either in the transfer case control computer, the wiring, or the switch. Eric is damn good at this stuff but I think this may be a rare case where I think more tests are required and I sort of disagree with his diagnostic conclusions at this time. It will be interesting to see if part 2 has me eating crow on this!
Yes @widgy is correct. However, a bad ground on the receiving end could also cause odd problems like this, where the 1.5V looks good on the sender, but the receiver won’t see it properly without a good ground reference. My main point was not to trust the scan tool too fast, because “off” is not a possible position, and either means the scan tool really means 4L, but the programmer was lazy and used a cut-and-paste from a previous line and forgot to fix it, OR “off” means something very special, such as a mode from the TCM saying it cannot be commanded to 4L because _________. I would check the scan tool response as I noted, and if it still says “off” pull out my other scan tool and see what it says before replacing anything.
Is it possible that someone swapped the transfer case? Fresh oil, crossmember bolts, etc show signs that someone's been in there. Are there similar units that simply don't have 4L?

I think the transfer case control module is detecting that the transfer case is not shifting into 4 low, so it's physically just shutting 4lo off. I would actually go down to the transfer case and physically apply voltage to the control motor, to see if it will actuate into 4 Low at all. I have seen that failure, and 2010 is new enough where it should detect High Resistance or other issues with the speed sensors and not allow it to go into 4 low, so the default would be off. That said, I would also pull the rear diff cover, and check the oil back there. If the front diff is shot, you can bet the rear diff is probably just about as bad. For reference, that should be the same axle that is in my 2002 Avalanche, or very similar, and that made it to about 250,000 before the pinion bearing committed suicide. My cargo vans 10-bolt made it to 350,000, and I have a new one rebuilt and ready to go in.
When I was young, back before electricity, when my friends dad brought home a " new to him" used 1954 Plymouth with the 6 cylinder L head engine. It had 345,000 miles on it, and it still ran like a swiss watch. So Eric being amazed at 247k does not amaze me, it reinforces how far the USA has fallen. Of course back then, people just looked at the tires to see if they needed air. I guess folks were just smarter back then.

Thanks for watching" and I sit back and think "I don't know about that one." LOL. I am not trolling him I am respecting him and every one that even tries to do what he does. They don't make it easy to work on cars anymore. God bless
@@GS-lh2nx I firmly believe that it's not that they /can't/ do it, but that they won't take the time and effort to think about how to do it. Just speaking from personal experience, though, working with guys (yeah, only guys, never met any mechanics of other genders like this) who just wanted to load up the parts canon and hurry through to the next job. They knew how to do the hard things. They just didn't want to.
Coffee and SMA first thing in the morning makes for a good day!
I do troubleshooting on new vehicles, I do occasionally tell customers to take it the a dealer. Usually that’s because the factory screwed something up and they shouldn’t have to fix it, but sometimes it’s is there’s something wrong, I cannot figure it out in reasonable time and they shouldn’t have to deal with that on a new vehicle.
"Take it to the dealer" You are 100% right on that!
I DEMAND a "The car dirty Sanchez...." SMA T-Shirt be put into production immediately!!
We finally see the day that Eric O pulls the parts cannon out of the back room!! And absolutely, what else do you do there. Interesting video, you got a good one there. Thanks for bringing us along.
The Lego movie reference was funny as hell. Glad the hood kept that broncing buck under control...
Can’t wait for part 2 and maybe 3 - 4 - 5

What is this @pinehollowautodiagnostics ?
Always like to see you and Mrs O. You two are a pair meant for each other. Looking forward to part 2, want to see the axle replacement.
Good move pulling back on to the blacktop, it's jiggly bits will be easier to sweep up and reinstall.
Might be a bit hard to sweep up powdered metal in sludge form 😂

@@jumpinjojo Thanks for stopping by with your extremely busy schedule.
@@kboomarangfinch167 I have plenty of time to watch SMA videos.
@@jumpinjojo Seems like you have more then just watching time, again thanks for stopping by.
At least you have a supply of Never Seize to put it back together with. 😂
My first thought is the mode switch as well, unless the truck doesn't have 4 low, then you have the wrong switch. That TPMS relearner looks like a smart phone. You have a very lovely assistant and I love watching you repair cars. Wish I lived closer to you. I'd bring all my stuff to you to be fixed.
Although if you lived closer you’d be forced to take your stuff to him. I wish there was an Eric in every state and country.
Just be thankful you don't get the rust from living closer
I remember several years ago my dad worked on this ladies 1966 Chevrolet Impala. I noticed it had little cables attached to the engine. My dad told me when a motor mount breaks on those if the cables weren't attached the accelerator linkage would reverse and hang the throttle wide open. Glad to see GM has come a long way. Great video!
Auction car vs Mr O! This will be epic!
Did Wilbert’s drop some swag on Eric? He surely didn’t spring some bucks for that Tee shirt. These “Used car guy” videos are some of my favorites. Right up there with a road trip to Wilbert’s You Pull It. Thanks Eric.
"The car dirty Sanchez...." I laughed hysterically when I heard that.
I am almost 70, I thought I knew a lot but I am still learning from Eric who knows more than Ruth Westheimer.
Breathlessly waiting....No dealer needed!Mr O is on the trail!!!
Turn up the radio loud enough & you'll never know there's a problem. Tape over the code lights works wonders too
Or, do what my old supervisor did, pull dash out, yank out bulbs that light up for everything other then high beams and turn signals, and replace dash, can’t have a light if there’s no light bulb 🤣😂🤣😂
That's what I tell people just jamm to music and you'll never hear the noise again.

That Crank Relearn is a pain and goes back as far as the 1996 Vortec days. You made that look easy. And it made a huge difference on the smoothness and performance on the Vortec engines.
I replaced the crank sensor on my 01 silhouette, and drove it for a year before having access to a scan tool to do the relearn. Never set a code.
As much as I enjoy watching (and learning) your videos, I further enjoy the interactions between you and Mrs. O.

It amazes me they're selling so well, with the prices of gasoline we have now. Especially since most of the people buying these could definitely get by with somthing smaller/cheaper/more efficient. Their money, their sorrow though.
@@BigWheel. I was at a car auction a month ago, and watched a 2021 Escalade with 1400 mi go through for $120,000.
Perfectly timed as I sit down with my tea!

i got 300k plus out of my Gm Suburban and Pickups 2001-2006. Still going .
My 4wd went out and it was mice ate wires under fuse box in engine compartment .
I also converted my older pickup to manual cable for front axel and transfer case. They sell a kit for this.
Excellent Show funny sense of humor.

Funny how the used car specials are always the cleanest on the inside and out ;) I used to do some used car dealer trade in work at the body shop I used to work at. It was amazing some of the repairs they wanted us to do for trade in. Beware used car buyers.
Friend of mine was unfortunate enough to spend time in a shop that got some used dealer work. His favorite "fix" was being instructed to fit a four speed shift knob onto a vehicle that had a whine in fifth.
My washing machine started draining the second you started draining the tin man's main vein, the sound and timing made me laugh out loud 😛 Great to learn things from ya, exceptional videos!
Eric, because of u, watch Wes work, and pine hollow diagnostics I have taken a real interest in auto mechanics as a hobby. I am a tour bus driver now but grew up on a farm so I am mechanically inclined but have always hated vehicle repair due to my lack of knowledge of the technology behind the newer vehicles. Wish we could go back to vehicles without computers and emissions junk. Give me a vehicle with a motor, battery, starter, solenoid , distributor and plugs. Let’s go back to basics. Thank you for taking the time to video your work so we can all benefit from your knowledge, skill, wisdom and work ethic. Please don’t stop making videos. You are inspiring those of us with different career paths. I appreciate you and your family!!
This will be a good vehicle for someone once it is fixed, since it also looks to be pretty clean and straight, so I hope you get the nod to finish the job. And looking at your official Wilbert's U-Pull It, of Bath, NY, shirt, I hope it's Wilbert's for the win - that they will have a lower mileage front diff and a selector switch (maybe from the same vehicle) that you can use.
Depending on the transmission. They go fast.

you got a squirrel under the hood somewhere as well....Ive watched this episode at least 3 times and your appeal is your sense of humor and your level headedness, I think most guys would be ready to kill someone over that switch isssue.
Definitely no problem with the drive belt. 👌
Just a fun fact from a guy who loves classic Mustangs but dailies a 4Runner approaching 500K miles. ;)
Mine is a Silverado 2003 4.3 with 251,000 mile . Still rocking . When I got it in 2003 used it had 11,000 miles.
Looking forward to 'part 2' of this.
I AM NOT A CAR GUY. Meaning, I am glad I am not a mechanic, however, I pick up quite a of info just watching you go thru all your steps. I would certainly bring my vehicles to you to fix something. Thank you for the great video.
Lots of admiration for you Eric. Some of this is beyond me, but I learn a bit with each video.
Great lego movie reference. These are the things that keep me coming back.
Oh boy ... I can't wait for part 2 now, because all of this stuff is cool stuff to see!
the question is ...watta we do till part 2?? wow new song lyrics for S.M.A"s new album lol...
That TCCM switch gets feedback from the ECU reporting the position of the transfer case, dumping it (output) to the LED outputs which are independent of the switch position, which is an input. The majority of manufacturers of this junk use this system or something similar.
And THAT'S why I prefer a mechanical linkage, a.k.a., a shift lever through the floor!
Bingo!!!
So much fun watching you. My mechanic said “ Go to the dealer you need a valve job on your 2008 Jeep Liberty.”
I've had a similar condition with a GM 2-speed transfer case not going into 4WD, turned out the diff fluid was low. So in your Tahoe case I'd first replace the unit and then see if 4WD fully functions before replacing any switch or module.
test the switch after you take it out
"247,000 miles...holy shhhugar!" I may have to borrow that one, brother!
My first thought is that the “Off” is the scan tool not knowing what 4L is. The voltage is correct, so the switch looks like it is doing its thing. To prove it, I would disconnect the switch and inject 1.5V into the connector and see if the live data shows anything different.
Yep, my thoughts exactly, it has voltage, but does it have the current to drive it…..
@@Sicktrickintuner if it didn't have the current to drive the input, it wouldn't have the right voltage at the input.
I work in a machine shop and we use Gibbs too. We love it. We call it "the employee of the month" because it's the hardest worker in the shop. 👍

That was, as always, an excellent video. I'm not worthy. I watch your noodle at work and it is smooth!
Yeah, that's what I'd do; apply voltage directly to the motor and see if it'll shift.
