Hey Mr. O. I’m a 69 year old retired guy from Wisconsin and live about 25 miles from where they produce WD-40. I worked at a trucking company that transported that product daily. I wasn’t there that long before moving on in life but we moved millions of those cases on to there destination. That was 41 years ago, glad to see it still has a great reputation. Can’t be without it. Love the videos!
Lol... I so wish everyone had a camera in their pocket when I went to auto school... It would be internet gold, watching an instructor of mine, have a vehicle fall off lift at FULL HEIGHT!
I'm glad that You put these videos on here. You and Mrs O are Funny. But also Serious. You take care of folks in your area. And We are Blessed to watch You!! GOD Bless You Folks!!!
It's great to see a true professional at work. I feel for you working in the North with so much salt and therefore rusty car parts. I just spent most of today replacing the front coil springs and drop links on the wife's 14 year old Ford Fiesta. I live in Scotland, where we can have severe winters. Heat no good, quality impact gun no good, cutting wheel helps. Even with the bolt heads cut off on the drop links , I STILL needed to drill the remains of the drop links studs out due to rust. I suppose a garage would just say cheaper for labour, just to replace the whole strut. Keep up the good work, I have learned so much from your channel.
Alrighty then. I admire you skill, knowledge and confidence. Not all RUclipsrs have all that. I've seen too many just blunder through it. Not fun! Good day sir and thanks.
I love watching the videos of an excellent mechanic at work. I miss working on my own cars do to age. What would used to take me maybe 3 hours is now 6 or 8 hours, no more.
I thoroughly enjoy watching you repair the autos at your shop. I miss being able to turn the wrenches myself due to my disability. Another very informative video with step by step instruction. Keep em coming.
It's just great watching a master at his craft. You make it look so easy. If it's not to late please make a video of the car all torn apart from the dealer. That would be be interesting. You're the best !!
Definition of my getting older? Trying to watch this video after 11pm *twice* and convincing myself I won't doze off. I failed both times. Third time is a charm LOL. Thanks as always, Eric.
Hi, Mr. O. If you can do it, I can watch you do it, That's for sure. It is good to see Honda design work to your advantage, unlike many other designs that do the opposite. Thanks for sharing! Stay healthy!
I dont know why i enjoy your videos but i do. Not have a chance to work in the field very much i appreciate honesty and integrity you bring to the industry. I have a strong interest in mechanical operations.
I've had my employer's Subaru in for dealer oil changes. The first 4 were disasters, 3 different dealers, all fails. I finally asked employer if I could do my own oil changes. Got the ok, saves them money and it's done right.
Springs are always fun. My S-Class Mercedes almost cost me a finger when the spring compressor let go while setting the spring in place. It took quite a few stitches to put my finger back together.
When everything you have can be used as a hammer, everything looks like something that can be loosened with a hammer. And you're right. Love the channel. I've learned so much about general mechanicalnessness, beyond the vehicle maintenance. And you're a fellow upstater, so we gotta stick together like rusty sheet metal.
Eric, this was an excellent video! You know I saw the easy buttton, and I heard it in my mind, "That was easy!" You always make it look easy! Thank you!
2010 Honda Odyssey is five (5) years past it’s Life up in the Rust Belt of New York. Customer’s Money pays for Mrs. O’s Shopping trips and Other Bills. 😬👍🙏
Another great video. I'm glad that I'm not the only one who has turned a nut in the wrong direction! It gives me hope that I'm not alone when making mistakes.
Hey Eric, near the end of the video, when the job is almost done you should hit the easy button that's on your tool cart. I see it beside your computer screen. Because you make it look easy. When you do a diagnostic video I don't have a clue on what to look for, but I can do most other repairs and replacements on the vehicle.
Yes, please put that pin back in that grenade 😆 Two things gave me the heebie jeebies while i was working in the motor pool: compressed springs and airing up split ring tires! Thx for letting us see you work and with awesome commentary👍
Thanks Eric another great adventure video and I totally enjoyed it. As you mentioned Honda do think ahead sometimes with those strut access holes. Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘💖💖💖💖
good way to relax on a Sunday night with a quality SMA video and working on a Hondu, Thank you Mr. O for another good video.Oh yeah and the barke kleen intro just the icing on the cake!
Replacing the struts on my '03 Forester, I had issues with the spring compressors riding around the spring and slipping to one side! Totally unnerving! I found take a strip of emery cloth folded in half so the abrasive side faces the spring and cup of the tool. No more slipping! Yes, it would be nice to have a wall mount unit. Not gonna happen for this DIY guy!
Thank you Mr O. For the antidrag clip part. You know Honda told me my 09 Honda Odyssey is not equipped with them. So thay won't put them on. So I told them nether will you be putting on my breaks. I was only having them do them because I was down with a Hernia. Still got it done myself 👍
Nice to see the fronts done and the hints - like if you havent done spring compressors, take them somewhere. Hey a quick note, the silicone grease works really well for the pins in squeaky door hinges too.
My first car had clackety CV joints. My father specifically forbid me to attempt axel repair/replacement. You disassemble one engine in a frenzy, and they never trust you again...I put *most* of the parts back in the right places!
I could have used someone like you when I was younger I had to do it all by myself the only person in the family that could take machines apart and put them back together and I had to figure it out all by myself transmissions engines everything wow I could have really use someone like you back in the 70s and the 80s everybody wanted me to fix their world I did the best I could boy what a pain then I severed my spinal cord oh what fun that is you know what on Earth I love watching you because I see The challenge and the knowledge in your eyes God bless you sir
Thanks for another awesome video. It doesn't matter what the task of the day is, there's always something to learn. We appreciate all that you do. And a huge thanks for doing work where the customer supplied the parts! The local shops that I have been using will no longer install ANY customer supplied parts. And they always have a lame lie as to why they don't.
I had Centric Premium rotors for my 2010 Odyssey. They started pulsing after not too long. It would get worse as they heated up. I inspected and found they were not split cast as advertised. I called Centric, and all they said was simply: "oh yeah... they're not all split cast even though we advertise them as such." I don't know if that contributed to the premature failure or not. I do know that I replaced them with Bosch QuietCast, they are split cast, and they have been fine for a couple of years. The advantage of split casting, BTW, is that the vanes are symmetric hence dissipate heat more evenly. The OEM rotors are symmetric vane, split cast.
Yeah those anti drag pins are a pain I always put the top bolt in first also, guess both our me-maws knew the same tricks. I usually just hook a bungy cord on the top and strap the other end around the lift arm to hold the caliper. Anyway always appreciate your content and always looking for better (easier/faster) ways of doing jobs and you’ve shown me a lot. Thanks bud, look forward to the next one!
Speaking of cv axles, the pink haired attendant at my local parts stores gave a trans cv axle, when it was time to install nothing worked. 🤣🤣🤣 Excellent video as always.
Another great job done at SMA! Thank you for the tips and of course the entire video! This ole Hondoo's gonna do great for another 10 t0 12 years or until the salt/rust claims it as on of its victims. The salt on that inner splash shield was stuck like glue. Reminds me of the late 1950's though the 60's till Sept 68. Then came 4 years of the USAF. The shields in the late 50's through the 70's were sheet metal and not long lasting. "Come on, you got 3 kids!" LMAO!
I have used the exact same spring compressor at work and those springs aren't too bad - the real big ones with only a few turns are real nail biters! I use vice grips on one of the lower holders for extra safety - I have seen one wind its way out
you should try wd-40 specialist penetrating oil in the sprey can with adjustible straw nozzle, works even better than standard wd-40. nice work as always.
Thanks Honda, I really like working down in those holes, rather than removing the cowl and having it in the open. At least you get to use your claw and magnets.
Job I did just before Christmas on a hyundai tucson top bearings had gone on near side so changed both with screwed up back after car accident 2018 dam near killed me holding the spring unit while trying to get a nut located up top. Great video as always Buddy
I replaced springs on car once, the struts were bad bought as a unit, pretty hard job for me a diy guy. I’d probably bring it to my independent shop next time 👍
Eric, Great video and repair - thank you! Perhaps you could explain what the deal was with the drive axle and how you determined it to be the source of the vibration. Paul (in MA)
Those drop links can be such a PITA that if they are OEM with no flats I just change them anyway. The last ones I bought were £8 ($10) for the pair delivered so it was a no-brainer. If I was paying for my own time the labour cost involved in messing about trying to save them would have far exceeded the cost of the parts.
Instead of a broken spring a rusted lower spring perch allowing it to push down the strut tube onto the tire. (Happened to a friend of my son fortunately on a pleasant warm day near the house.) Otherwise, the same general repair. Enjoy watching your videos.
yikes, did the tire go boom? I have seen broken springs kick out and go right through a tire sidewall, luckily that often happened at slow/crawling speeds/reverse while turning wheels. my buddies uncle had it happen when backing out the driveway, BOOM went the tire and we ran out of the garage to see what happened! it turned out the spring was broken for quite some time and he kept driving it anyway, very lucky it occurred backing out a driveway and not on highway/roads.
@@throttlebottle5906 Tire was OK just unable to rotate. Since the spring extended it lost much of its tension so didn't cause damage. Had to go find a new strut assembly though.
Miss the first video on replacing the rear springs?

The paper towel trick is brilliant
I love the dramatic music when the brake cleaner comes out.
Thank you for being a man of integrity and excellence.
Wow man, that is really generous! Thank you! ☺
Wow! 😍
That was really nice of you, buddy! I've been following Eric since around 2014 and he indeed is a good dude!
I just love how you pull off the Astro and hammer the socket on with it! Every tool has a hammer side!

This is a guy that takes care of his car---I like to see that
Another outstanding class at South Main Auto University. The instructor's style is something to behold. All RUclipsr mechanics take note!

You sure can manage the rusty stuff. Well played old timer - well played
MOTHER of pearl... boy they're snug... Love it.
I also used Centric disk brake parts, front and rear, for my '12 Chrysler 200 Touring convertible when I did that job a year or so ago.

You can buy pre-assembled "speedy-struts" from Monroe, kyb, and others.
yeah, generally if a spring is broken, the strut is toast or ready to fail and the dust boot bellows bad anyway. just replace the whole thing as unit.

Easier to find tissue than electrician tape. I always find electrician tape when I'm looking for Christmas decorations or something
Or grease
I usually use painters masking tape or electricians tape, have for decades. 🤷♂️👍🏻👌🏻
My wife enjoyed the Austin Powers impression
YEahhhh Baby!
Wish I would have known that trick with the brake pad clips this weekend😂 will keep that in mind next time!
I am jealous of your torque wrenches.
Got torque wrench envy.
Best of the best! You always make everything look so easy while entertaining. Thanks!!
Nice work Eric O. Thank you for the video.👍
