Winter Wild Camp in the Peak District

  • After the last 'Wet Wildcamp' I'm heading to higher and drier grounds in the Peak Districts.
Camping at Bull Clough Head over looking Howden Reservoir. The night time temperature was around -3C, but as the snow came down around 2am temperatures rose a little.
Watching the only UK native Hare, the Mountain Hare, now in winter colour and the Red Grouse which inhabit that area.
    Thanks for watching.
    Steve.

Crafty Veggie maybe so. Back in the day I helped deal with several finds in the area.
There was a wartime gunnery range at Upper Midhope so stuff frequently turns up around Pike Low, Margery Hill and on Outer Edge. I also know of an 18lb live shrapnel shell turning up on Dukes Drive. The entire area was used heavily during both wars and the history is fascinating.

No, just the basic tent. I try and push the porch out as much as I can to get my bag and boots in. As for wildlife, there isn't as much as should be, anything which may affect the grouse gets taken out! Cheers, Steve.

I do believe grouse shooting should be banned and the red grouse given protected status however there is no disputing the benefit heather burning has on a grouse population, another truly enjoyable film

A lot of the land around there is National Trust land, and as there is still illegal shooting of birds of prey, I'm surprised grouse shooting is still going? I does make great habitat for grouse, but nothing else is allowed. There are traps everywhere. The hare are even shot? That area should be full of wildlife in the summer, it's all grouse and sheep. I guess it all comes down to money? Thanks for watching. Steve.

What do you call that funny little bird toward the end with the red cap?

The funny one with the red cap was a Red Grouse, the even funnier looking one with the blue cap was me! Haha, Steve.

Very nice, can I ask what camera did you use to capture in the photo stills night shots? Thanks for sharing ATB Yorkie

It's a Sony DSC-HX400. I like it for video, not too good for still though. Any camera with fully manual controls work. Steve.

I just can't afford all the cameras and drones required.

Can’t you get the local shoplifter to get you anything. It’s usually half price.

I've been going up there for years. First day hiking and then wild camping. Its a great place to be on your own, nothing man made to be seen when you are in that high valley, very remote for the that part of the UK. Cheers, Steve.

Great video Steve , I camped up there back in September. It was warm but really really windy. I didn't find the spring. Is it just down from the stones? Thanks Dave

It's a nice quiet place. The spring is just down a little to the left. Great fresh clear water. Steve.
