    These old workhorses had such great character. Each one ran slightly differently from the next. I have many happy memories of riding them.

      @matthewbrown3420 3 года назад

      In what way did each one ride differently? Them and the A stock and the 38 stock were the best. Same family of trains.

      @@matthewbrown3420 Some had louder motors and compressors than others, doors would clatter shut on some and on others they'd almost stick half way. Some seemed to have louder creaks and groans as they got older. A few seemed to have that extra oomph on the outer sections. There were even small details such the guard to driver communication bell sounding clearer on some. I guess some of the above could be down to driving style but not all of it. My favourite was one particular unit where the guard had to thump the control panel at each station to get the pilot light to illuminate!

      @@tome8677 Come to think of it the traction motors were louder on some carriages than others. The louder ones sounded a lot like a Metropolitan line A stock don't you think? I think the A stock traction motors were just a more powerful version of the 59/62 traction motors with different gearing.

    notice the lack of hustle alarm, and the fact the doors would never quite close in sync due to the amount of times they were held open by the punters!!!

    2:13 is a sight you just cant forget. The wood surrounds of the windows. The guards equipment at one end. That moquette. The wooden slatted flooring. The hanging balls to hold to lol. And all the while outside the train, a London thats lost to memory.
    Thank goodness there's people with foresight like you, that video'd all this stuff when it was still in service. The heritage trains are lovely but don't have the grit and grime of the reality that was.

    Yes, quite a few have been preserved. I bought driving car 1304 and had her in my garden for a few years and did some restoration before selling her on. I find the video wonderfully nostalgic, obviously made 1998 or 9 as you can see the new trains.
    1304 is I believe alive and well, let`s hope she runs again one day.

    Most of the mk1 1972 stock was chopped off the Northern line. A few were kept and reformed as half units with the mk2s on the Bakerloo line as one train as well as complete trains refurbished and converted to driver only operation.
    Some mk1 cars were tweaked and incorporated into the 1967 stock but placed in the middle as they did not have automatic driving equipment.

    Just to let you know the Redbirds were built with thinner steel compared to the cars retired in the 1980s, which is why they started rusting by the early 2000s. As a matter of fact someone who works for the MTA told me that one of the work cars he helped scrapped had not one bit of rust on it and it was already 50+ years old. These 1959 Stock cars are cool especially in that silver colored paint scheme.

      I am a native Londoner of 49 years, but I also love the old NYC Subway Redbirds. The Underground trains in this video were made of Aluminium of about 4mm thickness. For the first 15+ years they were aluminium coloured, but due to oxidation they turned a very light shade of grey which looked more white.
