  • A video taken in September 1994 in the last week of operation of Underground trains to Ongar. 1962 stock is also seen at Epping, Debden and Loughton. After the Cravens 1960 stock finished its peak hour workings on the Ongar line it ran in service back to Loughton to stable in the sidings there which is also seen here. If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

      I used to like riding them as a kid back in the 1970s. Had a run out to Ongar with my mate (with only a ticket for a few stops from our home station!) and at Ongar the train failed. Ths staff put us on a green Routemaster bus on London Country route 339 back o Epping, then we had to get back on the platform with a ticket that was no valid there! But the collector was reading his paper as we whizzed through quick and we got back home ok.....happy days!

    9:01 I love how the driver creeped forward, for then the doors actually having to be re-opened...
    Also, seems like the driver (or the driver terminating it at White City before this one took it back to Epping) forgot to turn off the headlights (and turn on the tail-lights) at White City...

    • @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
      @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus  6 лет назад +3

      The rolling forward is the driver expecting to get the bell from the guard but he re-opened the doors, maybe a passenger ran for them or they were a bit 'sticky' and wouldn't close the first attempt. As to the head/tail lights, it was common practice for the guard to nip into the back cab as the train approached the terminus and change them over ready for the return journey although strictly speaking LT did not approve of this until the train had arrived and you had opened the doors.

    Two of the 1962 stock trains still operate on the Central line today as Sandite rail trains.
    As they have ATO equipment installed, they are free to use the the Central line manually anytime without restrictions.
    The ATP tells the driver what speed to drive the trains and when the train must stop and can proceed.
    One 1960 tube stock which now as a 1973 stock trailer car instead of a 1938 car in the middle, presently works as the track recording train can also use the Central line in operational hours as it also has ATO equipment installed.

      @@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus when the 1992 stock took passenger services on the Central line, some of the best conditioned 62 trains went to the Northern line to be combined with the 1959 stock as one inter worked train. They made up half the train in 3 cars.
      I'm guessing the 1972mk1s were a nightmare to work on the Northern line, unreliable and slow in performance.

  • @vicsams4431
    @vicsams4431 Год назад +1

    I seem to recall the Ongar line was originally built by the Eastern Counties Railway / Great Eastern Railway, and the Central Line was still owned by British Rail from Stratford to Ongar until as recently as 1971, because a friend of mine who worked for BR had a BR Residential [Staff] Pass from Loughton to Liverpool Street as he joined prior to 1971. Indeed the BR civil engineer sidings at Temple Mills, was originally named Loughton Branch Junction [South ?] prior to being renamed Temple Mills Junction. I have done the Epping - Ongar shuttle with Cravens 1960 stock while in LT operation. But I also recall an unpainted white Cravens 1960 stock on the Woodford - Hainault shuttle. I love LT stock painted in red. It reminds me of the red CO/CP stock on the District Line in my youth, prior to the unpainted white R Stock. (Makes you feel old when you can remember the D78, R and CO/CP ! I had a similar recent experience doing the Class 484s (D78s) on the Ryde - Shanklin, when one basher reminisced about the Class 483 (1938 stock), when I told him I remembered the Class 485 (1922 Standard Stock) he looked at me like I was a Martian !) Also, wasn't there supposed to be an escaped load of scorpions scurrying about Ongar station at one stage, but I expect a cold winter killed them off. I agree with Soi that the Epping Ongar Railway is well worth a trip. You can park in the Kings Head Pub in North Weald on the understanding you are having lunch there. They serve some superb McMullen ales there. Originally Platform 2 at Epping was almost exclusively reserved for the Ongar shuttle, but once the Ongar line was sold, LT liked the operational flexibility of using both platforms at Epping, thereby scuppering any attempt to physically link the preserved railway and the LT network. Of course, Blake Hall station is now owned by a well-deserved local enthusiast who saved the EOR. Yes, the line was originally supposed to connect with Chelmsford (not Dunmow). I think the comments about nuclear bunkers is an urban myth. I have been inside four nuclear bunkers, one preserved (at Kelvedon Hatch) and three active bunkers, but I am not permitted to disclose their locations.

    If only Epping to Ongar was fully integrated into the Central Line, who knows, maybe the line would have been doubled all the way to Ongar and received the full electrification it would have needed (rather than what actually happened, where it was fed current from Epping, leaving it drastically underpowered for more than just a single four car train between Epping and Ongar, leading to the lifting of the passing loop at North Weald in 1976). Certainly, judging by the location of the red lamps, located short of the zero marker point, more of yhe platform at Ongar could have been utilised if full integration occurred

      It used to be a shuttle with 1960 stock Hainault-Woodford with a few 62 stocks running to Grange Hill via Woodford (for Hainault depot). It was in later years that they extended the Hainault trains to Woodford and stopped using the ATO Victoria Line system (it was the test line for the Vic line signalling & stock)

      @@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus You could be onto something there Soi, in those days it was all about the central area, hence the Marble Arch - Liverpool Street reversers which later became the White City - Liverpool Street trips. A lot more trains used to reverse at Loughton then as well, so probably a lot of Ealing/Ruislip trains at this moment in time started from there. Great footage, I think your films of Malcolm Barber give the best representation of the guards job in existence!

      @@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus It’s not very happy now I can tell you. Going back to the time of the video, there was a mass exodus from the Central when the 92s came in, many older drivers I know (some since retired) came from there just to avoid the new trains. Everyone I know who worked 59/62s says it was the best time of their career, and a lot of ex-guards have told me they would have stayed doing that even now if they hadn’t got rid of the role. Not sure how being a guard in 2021 (in the last car with passengers) would fare, there’s some right idiots about. London is a very antisocial place these days, glad Malcolm retired in better times…..

    The notice at 5:00 shows that the Ongar branch was to close in the summer of 1993. However it got a stay of execution due to those who regularly used it saying the replacement bus service would not be adequate, even with extra buses. The following year the branch did close, but only on the condition that London Underground would let someone else take it over to provide a service & they could use Epping station. The promised replacement service did not immediately happen, staying under LU ownership until 1998. Up to that point the tracks remained though the two third rails were removed after the line finally changed hands, which was to (& eventually become) 'The Epping-Ongar Railway Ltd', run by volunteers. Opening in 2004, a full ten years after the initial closure. It only provided a Sunday (& Monday bank holiday weekend) service between Ongar & North Weald, by then LU decided not to let the company use Epping station. That lasted for three years, before track improvements took place & reopened in 2012, when it became a weekend & holiday period service, again run by volunteers & is still running to this day. The line does continue from North Weald to Coopersale but stops just short of Epping. There are ongoing plans to build a new station to connect with the existing LU Epping station making interchange possible, meaning the old branch in it's entirety can have a revival at least of sorts. Hopefully before the 30th anniversary of the ending of proper services.

      Yes, it's fortunes improved after it's full ownership came under the former owner of Blue Triangle Buses. He invested a fair bit of Go-Ahead's money into the railway to get it up to the standard it is today.......a place i encourage people to visit, i've always enjoyed my days out there!
