- The Nine Road is the busman's name for one of London's oldest and most used bus routes, running between Mortlake and Liverpool Street. The film takes us along the route on a summer's day, and shows the operation and control of the Number Nines from early morning until past midnight.

Happy memories from 1967 when I drove the No 9 Bus out of Dalston Garage
cheers to memories of bygone days
The year I was born.... Safe Journey my friend!
I worked on the 11 bus route the no9 rival for the most popular route in London.
Mortlake’s buses were the best kept buses in London transport fleet , they weren’t clean
they absolutely gleamed , a credit to one of the smallest garages in the fleet .
Superb. That was my era. Wonderful old London.
Love these old films.. Many thanks for sharing.
Love this video, I'll be driving RM875 tomorrow morning and watching this always gets me champing at the bit to get behind the wheel of these wonderful icons, I've driven fifty five Routemasters in almost twenty nine years including an e-Northern General RMF.
The number 9 was THE route up into town for me, and I would have gone up there at least 3 or 4 times a month back in the 70s and 80s. Getting on at Mortlake Garage and nabbing the upstairs back seat first was always fun! Such a shame when they curtailed the route due to Hammersmith Bridge.
Great Video thanks .. my Dad was a bus driver at New Cross and drove the RM/RMLs
0:46 nice view of Hammersmith bridge before the paint peeled off. Double decker buses are now too heavy to cross
In the last shots we see the lady conductor walking home to Hammersmith, to close the film. Nice touch, but no cigar. When all other buses had stopped running, staff would go home on a staff bus, dropping off all over the place as required. I did a few when I worked at Stockwell in the 80s, it paid an hour or two in overtime.I then went home to Tooting on the N87 night bus. I enjoyed working on the RMs...Routemasters, on 7 different routes. When forced to go OPO, one person operated, I stood it for a few months, and left back in 86. The job was finished.
Wow wow learned something new the Bessie system amazing
So much of this is still familiar to those of us in the industry. Now where is my lost mileage form?
Immaculately turned out, reliable vehicles owned by the people of London and crewed by proud Union members.
Owned by London Transport, not the people of London.
@@CA-ee1et Not now, perhaps.
I drove the 9 when I was at S in 96to99 the bud mr tearney gets on after the concert is I think RM2023 I drove her we got 2extra standard RMs to boost the peak vehicle requirement on the 94/9 road the rest at S were RMLs glad I had a chance to drive them 😊
Lovely film!
Absolutely brilliant video. Never heard of the Bessie system. I was a driver in the 1960s, and I don’t they were about then. Just loved watching it all the way through.
Fantastic documentary
Excellent. Wow. Thanks.
Great song
That was delightful. Thanks for this! :o)
I did have a copy of this from London Transport headquarters with the music cassette on some sort of 70’s briefcase showfilm. I took the case apart as I was young but I lost the film and music 😢
Do you know the name of the symphony that starts playing at the 11:37 mark ?
@@sebastianvisconti2423 I don’t know.
My Dad Robin Goddard is driving the bus at 52 seconds in, best bus route in London!
From an era when it was far more civilised.
London has fallen unfortunately
What year was this made? Going by the cars and the people and the fact the white roundels started being applied in 1974 and there were plenty of buses with the gold lettering, I'd say late 1974 or very early 75.
Wow the RMs were uniformly well kept back then!
The advert briefly seen for 'A little Night Music' at 1.40 would also suggest around 1975
A time when the London buses looked perfectly turned out, and perfectly matching each other in uniform, like soldiers in a regiment. Compare that to the 1990s London bus fleet, with private operators running a mixed rag bag of bus types in their own livery, and often two or three different versions of that.
i worked with him on the 19 back in the mid 1990's if i remember right he lived in fulham
Who?
At 2:15 is an add for the July 1975 Royal Tournament.
The Route 9 now goes between Hammersmith Bus Station and Aldwych Operated by London United RATP Group from Stamford Brook Garage Using Wrightbus NBFL New Routemaster
I know hallam Ramsey very well, remember him as a gold badge
Where do you live now matey?
Brilliant show. Does anyone know when if was recorded. Loved the No. 9 bus from Mortlake. Great memories
1974 I believe

I know he's acting for the camera but the driver forgot to press the mike button when speaking lol
What year was this? I am assuming some time in the mid 70s?
This was filmed during the summer of 1976
TfL still do this today. Turning buses to fit them into the peak gaps. LT did this without batting an eyelid but it wasn’t perfect so the conservaties chopped it up and made it worse
Karn is labour and he runs London
Sad iq runs London and he's la bour , any mess and its down to him
Anna is very pretty.

Wonder if Miss Yardwood still alive
36 journeys, 4 off them cried off sick, a boiled engine somewhere. Then ask, why do passengers get angry?
