- The AEC Routemaster is a model of double-decker bus that was built by Associated Equipment Company (AEC) in 1954 (in production from 1958) and produced until 1968. Primarily front-engined, rear open-platform buses, a small number of variants were produced with doors and/or front entrances. Introduced by London Transport in 1956, the Routemaster saw continuous service in London until 2005, and currently remains on two heritage routes in central London.
Best memories from my younger years. Born in London in 64'. Beautiful days..... Sadly gone now 😔
Yeah, we were lucky to have seen Britain at it's best (I was born the same year)
All gone and never to return :(
The Routemaster was the best bus ever built - I should know having worked on them as a conductor in London as well as with a private hire Routemaster company up in North Wales. Originally built with a life span of 17 years and here we are 60 years later so it proves that the RM was a bus ahead of its time in terms of design and engineering, the same being with the Bristol Lodekka.
There’s a good argument for Routemasters even today. Very comfortable in their day and still a decent ride by today’s standards and incredibly practical on busy town and city routes with heavy loadings. When there’s a tube strike and RM’s are rolled out they move people far more efficiently than the modern stuff. They were ahead of their time and are a lovely thing to drive.
Love the routemaster buses a classic how dare people knock them they are a stumble of london
I remember taping this off BBC2 back in 1992/93, not all of it though I missed the first 3 minutes.. Thank you for sharing.
Love the RM, and everything that was London Transport!
I love the rm too I’m lucky to have a model of rm2 the prototype their a gorgeous big bus
Those days the thing is you could not get buggies or wheel chairs on then but now they have made room which is a very good idea thanks you all for the idea
That is what you call a bus
"Unbridled competition was frowned upon." How did that work out? Good video though.
Is there a reason there is a second audio track accompanying this in the background which I believe is an Episode of EastEnders.
Transferred from an old VHS tape.
Both the RT & RM were wonderful to ride
I am going to be a bud driver.tThe london buses are well built
I love buses because buses are very careful and drivers are good
I am glad that they have brought this masterpiece back even if it is on a short running tourist route.
A lot of weird background noise, but great doc.
Transferred from an old VHS tape.
Great Video, looking back into history of London 2 deck buses.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
omg its bulgy
THE 362 TFL BUS ROUTE IS THE BEST AND SAFE ALL THE DRIVERS ARE GOOD ON IT
Interesting how the drivetrain bits are distributed though the whole length of the bus. New buses with lower floors of course are a lot better, allowing better and faster handicapped access and faster entry and exit, the thing that slows buses down. But I get the Routemaster nostalgia.
