- These lovely old trains remained in service on the Isle of Wight (as class 483 stock) until the beginning of 2021. Featuring Michael Aspel and Patrick Macnee.
They went on another 34 years after this. A remarkable achievement.
If was only last year that they retired on the Isle of Wight 80 years old
Only driving motor cars (end carriages containing drivers' cabs) went to the island, but they enjoyed another30+ years' service!
A great upload, just a shame that the vid had degraded so much over time. I am so pleased i transfered all mine to DVD in the early 2000s. I even recognise three of the desperardos filmed on here, Blake, Parkin and the Motorman featured.....
Damn I miss those 59s, 62s and 72mk1s on the Northern line. They were a part of my childhood.
I thought the 72mk1s were a few 67s modified for crew operation but I discovered they were the 67 stock's identical looking cousin.
Yes, the 72 Mk 1 stock had giards' compartments and were equipped for manual operation, but the seating areas were identical to the 1967 Stock on the Victoria Line.
Great video. A proper train.
It seems like the 38TS seemed from a much further back time than they were, considering the 72TS are even older now but aren't so dated. 1972 simply doesn't seem that long ago!
and the 1973 is as old now too!
The 72s have had a major refurb, new vestibule screens, removal of the hangers, the end bulkheads have been opened up had glass fitted, the cabs seem to have had quite a makeover too from what I could see from the platform on my last visit to London. It looks a totally different animal to the ones I worked. The 38s were given a quick spit n polish and chucked back down the hole, warts (and dodgy doors) and all. Glad I was there for it tho. Lovely old machines to drive imho x others may disagree tho
London Transport Museum Depot in Acton Town has a 1938 Stock Tube Train as part of their heritage Collection
just one word to say - WOW
One still kept and some class 483’s saved
During the interior filming shot you can clearly hear that that car has flats , also the M/M should of kept the handle in series when leaving the shed ,
As an ex M/M on the Northern Line who used to drive those 38 stock you are correct series only in the depot ....
I Was taught that you never have it in Shunt for more than a few seconds, David Rowe.... almost certain I remember him from the District, coulda closed the cab door after him! Lovely old trains to drive tho, I did a few turns on them.. happy days.
@@warweezil2802 , indeed , inch or shunt for more than 30 secs would get the grids underneath red hot ! A friend of mine on the central had a fault on his train at Holborn sidings where the RPA’s were stuck and kept trying to notch up the motors despite being at a stand , LFB attended and said his train was molten metal underneath !
you have'nt by chance got that clip from Thames News from Autumn 1989 when the prototype refurbished C stock first cam on the scene have you?
ELSTREE VIA BANK? You wish!
Can someone tell me why Elstree is displayed on the front of the train?
A rail enthusiast, probably Mr Rowe as seen on the vid, brought it in for the filming. The destination plates were made for the extensions that were never finished.
@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus My dad was a driver on the northern line at the time and he told me that the management at London transport weren’t very happy when they seen that someone had put the Elstree destination board on the train.
