Nathan Milstein's performance of La Folia is my favourite. I see little point in comparing him with other violinists such as Pearlman because each of them shines in their own way and contributes unique and valuable interpretations of the music they play. As a violinist I am most grateful for what I have learned from each of them.. For me, Milstein's interpretation of La Folia is not just technically accomplished but he plays with such sensitivity, feeling and a beautiful silky tone.
Indeed a treasure. Brings back memories of Milstein coming to Lawrence High School LI NY n the 1960s and playing with such an extraordinary vibrato and bow control as I looked around to see if the locals knew they were hearing history. (I don't think they did. They knew he was a great violinist, though). Now I get to once again say-in fact the sensibilities Milstein represents are present in Hillary Hahn and countless violinists playing his Paganiniana. fyi, I understand Milstein never played the variations (in Paganiniana, not this Corelli La Folia set of variations) in the same order explaining he wrote it and could play it however he wanted. He also liked to teach a key a lesson but when it was d minor day he would never play Sibelius Violin concerto for his students because it was in that key and Heifetz "owned" the piece. Humility and genius as we find in his playing are in short order. Hats off Nathan Milstein. And to Rare Violin Treasures, thank you. Thanks for the memories you have stirred up.

This is great - one of the best I've heard. Yet, I have been enchanted with Eduard Melkus' 1973 recording (Archiv Produktion) for years now. Like Milstein, Melkus takes his time when necessary and his impromptu additions are not overdone! I've enjoyed this recording of Milstein.
Played this at the County Solo Ensemble and got a superior rating! I'm going to the States (and preferably the nationals, too). I can't wait. Some of the variations in this piece is different, though.
I like this version. 440, so I can attempt to play along. Just the right blend of "played-in-the-original-style" (whatever that is!), and Mr. Milstein's own interpretation. It's my go-to selection for study purposes, and for enjoyment!
My favorite interpretation comes from Nadine from Enlightened Audio Academy. There is such a beautiful sorrow in her music. Read the description in her video.
In his day he was very well known and was (and still is) very highly regarded. Perlman is still performing and has made more recent recordings, so he gets more publicity.
His solo Bach, Goldmark concerto, transcription of Chopin's nocturne, and arrangement of paganiniana recordings has earned him in a place in the hall of fame forever. His book of memoirs "From Russia to the West" and DVDs available also have my fullest recommendation. I don't think a lot of people realize it but he was the first Russian to play all solo Bach, it wasn't popular to play Bach back then in Russia. I can imagine him as a young child ripping out some Bach at age 12 or so, prof Auer and his fellow classmates must have been stunned and full of awe.
My daughter is working on this piece, and have trouble finding a recording with right arrangement and tempo. This one is perfect. Thanks for uploading it. It is such a breath taking performance.
@rareviolintreasures I, too, love the Perlman recording. He so captures the passion that I associate with Fritz Kreisler, whose arrangement Perlman plays.
this was great its probably the only one with the trill and variations im in beginer and trying to play this song im past the first page iv been learning it for over a month and yea it mite be pathetic for the fact that iv only leared a page dont wory im getting there what im saying is its the best song iv herd so far!
Incredible. This is why the old masters are the greatest. This is SO different from Enescu's rendition. If it had been Hilary Hahn and Joshua Bell instead they would sound nearly the same and lack artistic depth. But man, this is great. The ending is phenomenal. Milstein's sound is ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. So inspiring.
"Petenera" of flamenco music is based on : Rachmaninov: Variations on a Theme of Corelli, for piano, Op 42, ie: Op.5 Arcangelo Corelli Sonata No. 12 "La Follia".
The pure and not over-sentimental style of Milstein was a natural fit for baroque music. He hit upon the right way to play music of this period, with tasteful and not over-wide doses of vibrato, unlike the playing of many of his contemporaries, who gave it the full "wobbly, late-Romantic-period feel". For the uninitiated, check out his classic recordings of the Bach Sonatas and Partitas for unaccompanied violin; arguably the best , or best equal, interpretations ever (so also, check out Henryk Szeryng and Gidon Kremer,)
I heard for the first time the Follia by Joseph Szigetti and I founded so ..inspirational and since Is became a Reference for me;nobody else emouved me like this... Hear Milstein does not give his best as in the Vitali Chaconne! poicpi
I once had a recording of Milstein playing six Vivaldi concerti. Best Vivaldi playing ever, but recording is lost. Have never seen any of these concerti recorded by anyone else. Have you come across them?
Since this video was uploaded so many years ago, I don't know if this page is still active, or if anyone will see my comment, but as I listened to this (new to me) it sounded familiar - not exactly like something else, but it reminded me of something. I finally put my finger on it - "The Gael," the theme song from the sound track of the movie "Last of the Mohicans." The impression was so strong that I even messaged popular artist Dougie MacLean, who wrote the soundtrack, and asked if this piece waa his inspiration. (I haven't yet gotten a response)
Did Jean-Baptiste Lully compose "La Folia," or had it been around as a folk melody and he was the first major composer to "take the ball and run with It"? P.S. IMO Nathan Milstein was one-of-a-kind, and there is no point in comparing him with Heifitz or anyone else.
This is just PERFECTION....subtle , beautiful and after that I just don't want to listen to anyone else. p.s. Perlman may be the God among todays players but not in the company of milstein, Szeryng etc...........

Rachmaninoff and milstein were friends, I think after hearing milstein play bach inspired him to create the bach transcriptions for piano and also for rachamninoff to write his corelli variations. All were the result of rachmaninoff hearing milstein I think.
I think this is the Corelli Sonata in d minor, "Folies d'Espagne," Opus 7, #2. Rachmaninoff did a version for piano, Opus 42, Variations on a Theme by Corelli.
@kelleypm3 for someone to have a preference on violinists, i would assume they are probably a violinist. for your sake, if you are, look into the more obscure violinists of the last century, vasa prihoda, bronislaw huberman...a real master among masters...szeryng, szigeti, enesco, the wonderful toscha seidel.... and certainly michael rabin, who created a lush, romantic tone like perlman. itzhak might remain your favorite but you'll be in a for a real treat!!! best regards
