      Well Bratt is playing at a 31-goal, 108-point pace, Hughes at a 36-goal, 92-point pace, and Nico at a 44-goal, 93-point pace. The thing about that, though, is that the whole "evening out" thing is typically associated with players who are shooting at 20+%. None of these guys are doing that. Hell, Jack is only at 10%. The Devils are simply playing a sound possession game. Based on underlying numbers, they've actually underperformed so far, as the analytics say they should be 16-0 if they were shooting at just a league average rate in every game.

    The Devils have been scoring consistently from both their top performers as well as within their depth chart. They have 4 lines that can score. The defense has vastly improved with John Marino arguably being the most valuable in that he shuts down each team's top scorer. Last night he did this to Caufield. Nico did the same to Suzuki and their top line registered 1 shot the entire game. Goaltending was another issue last year but Vanecek is more than capable. This team is finding ways to win games they typically folded on and lost last year. If healthy, they could definitely make a deep playoff run.

    Three things have held the Devils back over the last couple of seasons: injuries, youth and general inconsistency. Once of these things was plaguing them at all times. Young players and goaltending would actually be playing well and their game would be derailed by injuries. They'd be reasonably healthy and consistent but the younger part of the core wasn't able to take that next step. The young guys would play well and they'd be fairly healthy but inconsistency (goaltending specifically) would let everything down. Quite the difference when it all comes together.

Having a healthy Hischier (who is coming around as well as a goal-scoring threat), Jesper Bratt, Tartar and Dougie Hamilton all capable of putting the puck in the net night in and night out. Also, being called to the All-Star team last year probably boosted his confidence greatly. For his talent, I think he's right on track being only 21. I'd love to see him score at least 35 this year.

Not to diminish what they're doing but even your clips in the video were Montreal, Washington and Philly, those teams are dog water right now. The real test for them in my opinion is when they start the schedule against Dallas, Panthers, Canes, Boston. That is the toughest part of there entire schedule coming up. It's easy to look great against teams at the bottom of the league. This team is stacked with talent and that's undeniable.

    Just something I noticed from playing fantasy hockey. Without really doing the numbers, NJ is only giving up around 20 shots per game, compared to around 30 for most other teams. What are they doing differently on defense this year? Work has me missing a lot of games this year.

      Lot more blocked shots, they do a much better job being tough on the puck and less soft turnovers, also my biggest thing I’ve noticed is everyone making sure to collapse into the slot when things start to get hectic, no more players getting pulled outta position and getting lost

    • @aloneill6337
      @aloneill6337 Год назад +1

      Possession and pressure. They have control of the puck about 60% of the game, which is huge in reducing shots against. The defense isn't significantly better than last year, as they were the 5th best team in the league at preventing high danger chances last season, but the offense and goaltending have improved dramatically, and a lot of that has to do with the team being much healthier.
      Last year, they played AHL guys in net for 61% of the season and were without at least 1 of Hughes, Hischier, and Hamilton for 67% of their games. When they had either Blackwood or Bernier in net and all 3 of those skaters healthy, they played at a 97-point pace, but when they were down to only 1 of those 3 skaters and neither goaltender they played at a 48-point pace.

    • @aloneill6337
      @aloneill6337 Год назад

      @@njdevseddie741, they're only on pace to block 1061 shots this season, 40 more (or 0.5 per game) than last year. It's not shot blocking. Shot blocking is actually disadvantageous, as it makes the goaltender's job more difficult by creating additional screens and rebound opportunities.
