This has to be one of the most chaotic episodes (structure wise) with a calm vibe
I think here in Britain we really do just love a standard cup of tea and we’re not too adventurous with our teas generally so a decaf cup before bed is considered a bedtime tea for us haha.
as a german this is so interesting because a tea trying to taste like a desert or something else is so common here.
I do drink a wide variety of tea but I usually stick to natural tones so maybe green tea with cardamon or a herbal tea blend or an earl grey blend.
Theres usually a whole issle of tea blends in our supermarkets and I don't get 3/4 of whats offered.
No thanks to caramel blueberry cheescake tea but it seems to have its audience here 😂
I'm sure Ariel knows this having lived in the UK, but blighty is British slang for Britain! So saying you're back in blighty is a slightly old school way of saying you're back in the UK after having been away, hence Blighty's :)
A solution to the TBR thing that I've found really useful as a fellow mood reader is rather than picking specific books, picking a category of thing you want to read more of. For example, I'm doing a 'Reading Round The World' challenge and have been for a few years and my goal for this year is simply to make more progress on that than last year. It has the challenge, ticking off your list component of a TBR that makes the monkey brain happy, but you still have a lot of freedom of choice within that category. Lianne from literarydiversions also does category based reading goals rather than TBR based ones which she has on her 'bingo board from hell' and she has the additional rule of when she completes a category she can do something to make another category easier to complete (e.g. upon achieving 'read 5 non-fiction books' she changed 'read 80% of 2023 purchases' to 75%)

Maybe in regards to the TBR issue you should give yourself prompts “a book to learn” or “a book that feels like …” so it is more flexible and motivating. Kind of like hunting for books that fit in those categories rather than feeling sad/diassapointed/stressed with a set list of books😊

i turn on my favourite podcast about books. they talk about tea and bread for half an hour. i lean back and smile. yes, perfect, this is exactly what i came here for!
As someone who is struggling with sleeping and has peas on their list of favourite foods, this ended up being a great recommendation
Tuning in for the first time and it was very jarring hearing my name the first couple of times (since it’s not super common). I was declutterring and kept stopping by to look up as if Ariel was talking to me 😅. Really enjoyed the episode & will definitely keep tuning in!

Ariel! have you heard of the book "Burma Sahib"? It's a book that came out this year about George Orwell and his early years as an officer that eventually transformed him into a writer. It has a 4.14 stars on Goodreads, and I think it will help you with reading a possibly new favorite!

Last night at the Telegraph club is probably my favorite book!! But I’m also a sucker for a historical fiction coming of age story. I can’t wait to hear what Raeleen thinks!
A PSA for any Aussies - they stock the malty biscuit tea at Coles and Woolworths! Also - highly recommend drinking the tea with oat milk - I tried it with cows milk and the flavour just didn't hit as hard. The oat milk reeeeaally brings out that biscuity flavour.

I've recently been diagnosed with a chronic illness that - among other things - means i have to do various forms of exercise basically every day now and i've been struggling quite a bit with it but getting Books Unbound on mondays and then listening to you two in little parts throughout the week while i go through my motions has really helped me stick to it - THANK YOU for keeping me company

Ariel- when you're next in the UK, you should try Bird and Blend tea (if you haven't already) for the chocolate digestive tea. They have a gorgeous cream egg tea at the moment too which I'm obsessed with! They also ship internationally...

I've just heard about a book coming out later this year (in August to be precise) that instantly made me think about Ariel and I wanted to shout out it!
It is called Libertad by Bessie Flores Zaldivar and it is a queer coming of age novel set in Honduras and the MC writes political poetry for her Instagram account, which of course made me think of Ariel's documentary.

I second that! It looks intriguing. Raeleen sounds like she is doing great. Starting your day with intentional activities and successes is life changing. That's why in the military you gotta wake up and make your bed!

I got the bedtime tea - based off Ariel's description it sounded just like my cup of tea (lol) and it was!! Haven't tried the biscuit one yet but it's next for sure. Going to skip the toast&jam one though 😂
just wanted to recommend the griffin and sabine series by nick bantock to ariel! they're beautiful little epistolary books with magical realism, and they're just delighful!!!
Decaf Black tea still has caffeine in it (for anyone who doesn't know). It's like you drinking a small cup of regular black tea 😅. So it's not really calming or suitable for bedtime imo.
I find the Toast and Jam tastes like strawberry jam. The biscuit tea tastes malty, but not straight up biscuit to me 😆

What if instead of setting goals to read TBRs, you set a goal to track what your moods were for your mood reads? Ex. "introspective" - Mary Oliver's poetry. Maybe it'd give you the liberty to be mood readers but still have some interesting information to share at the end of the year :)
This is so funny because I've thought about asking Ariel so many times what happened to the sourdough vlog but haven't, so I'm stoked I can finally watch it again lol. Also, Ariel, if you see this, I miss the reading rush vlogs from around that time as well, in part because you in one of those videos introduced me to Stardew Valley and in a small way entirely changed my life in 2019 😂 for which i am deeply grateful

I just finished listening to Project Hail Mary and agree with liking it but also finding it a little meh. I will say this could be me being unfair because I had just finished The Three Body Problem and it was incredible and like nothing I read before so it was a bit of an unfair back to back comparison. With Project Hail Mary, I found the narration style a bit grating after a while (the main character just got annoying) but what was funny was that as often as the main character said “this isn’t like Star Trek” the book actually felt very similar (in a good way) to a Star Trek The Next Generation Episode “Darmok” which is one of the best episodes of the series and a real tear jerker. I recommend it as watching after reading this book.
Yorkshire tea thoughts from a Brit - the biscuit and the bedtime teas are delicious, but the toast and jam tea is vile and should be banned

Hi, I really enjoy your show but I have been quiet. i just wanted to ask you if have watched a show called My Life Is Murder, with Lucy Lawless, she plays an ex-cop who retires and becomes a sourdough bread maker, every episde is full of her making her bread and she is very funny and protective about her bread. (The basis of the show is a freind from the department comes to her every week with an unsolvable crime that she solves.) It is funny and fun, and the mysteries are good. Lucy is very funny in it but series when she confronts the bad guys. Just thought I would let you know, your sourdough talk kept reminding me of the show. She learns German so she can talk to the customer service about her breadmaking machine. 🫓
