- The RTX-440 Assault Guntank was a mobile suit based on the prototype RTX-44. However, its development was halted after technical officer Clyde Bettany stole its specs and defected to Zeon, placing his subordinate and lover Aline Nazon under suspicion. Compared to the RX-75-4 Guntank, the Assault Guntank could deploy its secondary caterpillar treads and have its torso squat for its assault mode, which allowed it to move at higher speed. The Assault Guntank featured more armaments than the standard Guntank, including its main 220mm cannon, bob guns, a flamethrower, heavy mines, 2-tube MLRS and a rocket launcher.
It’s a slap in the face to Guntank lovers to know that one of the best versions of the Guntank is the one built for suicide missions where it’s guaranteed that it’s not coming back. They do make nifty allies in GBO2 on the frontlines.

And most damning is that no more of them would be made after making 3, due to using their blueprints as among the data they leaked to Zeon for a ploy

@@Tbs93 true that. But I guess by that point, with the development of the GM getting close to completing, and satisfied with the performance given by bipedal machines, they must have felt not much interest to further pursue Guntank like machines (at least not as a priority)
@@granmastersword yeah why waste money and resources in a more expensive machine when you have a much cheaper machine that can be modified into almost any role

Not sure these Guntanks would have been good for that situation, these are assault vehicles while the situation in 08th MS Team was a siege situation

Guntank MP is designed to keep pressure with constant bombardment which means they also have a lot of reserve ammo and they're hella cheap to make since they're just big tank with bigger gun while these things are suicide units made for hit and run tactics where they'll get in, fire everything they have and leave. Not really one that is meant for long term sieges. Plus in a ubran environment, a unit this fast is a death sentence because it can't scale buildings like a normal MS so it'll just keep crashing to other buildings if the pilots isn't skilled enough

These things seem insanely powerful. Crazy maneuverability when grounded, Main Cannon that can one shot on a direct impact, two arm guns with enough focused firepower to down a Dom, a napalm sprayer, mines, explosives, two different rocket launcher variants... honestly, if 90% of the OYWs most important fights didn't happen in space, this could have been a ridiculously strong force for the Federation. You know, setting aside the fact it got its specs stolen. Which just raises the question of why Zeon didn't try using it, honestly.
If we're being realistic these things would be way more effective as a platform than mobile suits, but unfortunately they don't look as cool. They also would have to rely on air support a lot
@@cabnbeeschurgr6440 That wouldn't be a problem, especially at the Battle of Odessa. More recent depictions keep adding mobile suits to the federation side, but the battle was still primarily fought and won by conventional tanks, artillery and good ol' total, unchallenged air supremacy. Turns out that even if you have 1300 mobile suits against less than 40, you can't do much if they enemy has fixed you into being unable to use any kind of mobile, offensive doctrine.
A prototype was made for the previous game, Hildruf, but it would be unrealistic to transport it from Side 3 on the other side of the moon or the lunar city of Granada. For the same cost it would be better to transport Zaku or other land combat weapons, arms, ammunition, and replacement personnel.
Because it wont sells more toys, they need moar toys to sell not cool unit
Let's just say the specs were not stolen but intentionally leaked so they could implant spies when the EFF deemed the unit uneconomical for mass production.

War crime achievement (killing inhumane with a flame thrower)
Flamethrowers against military targets is not a war crime. Flamethrowers against civilian targets is. "Flamethrowers are a war crime" is a common myth started by the fact that militaries stopped using them much post-WW2 when it was realized that their range was a problem and carrying a large fuel tank made them a target. Today, a lot of militaries have replaced them with Incendiary rockets like the Russian RPO and for a while the US had the M202 FLASH, which are safer for the person carrying, safer for the people around them, disposable, and most of all, have much longer ranges.
Sadly, they arent a war crime

I'm used to GBO2 which has it as another missile pod like on the left instead of the mines/artillery missiles combo in the OVA
GBO2 has the bad custom of nerfing Mobile Suits for the sake of making higher rarity ones better. The Zudah for example was stripped from it's shield deployable knives wich should be a Melee weapon
@@Fulcrox The Zudah has Enhanced Tackle and Shield Tackle skills to represent it.
This is common throughout most Mobile Suits that have melee weapon shields, like the Marine Gelgoogs with the spiked knuckle-shield

Holy shit. That's one of the best mechtanks I've ever seen, and it's so versatile! That's especially shocking considering the guntank keeps getting decked when I see it.
Usually I don’t like mechs very much due to how impractical they appear to be, but this one actually looks really versatile for what they do

This is ridiculous. If they could make Guntanks this powerful, then why bother with Mobile Suits? Just make Super Guntanks.
Because these things are only really good at combat on (relatively) level open ground with clear lines of sight. They'd be absolutely garbage in urban combat or forested areas, and Mobile Suits can still handle those types of terrain.
I love the Guntank, but it's very much a specialized tool.

They'd still be useful in urban warfare and lightly forested areas.
The RTX-440 is utterly useless in those types of terrain for anything other than deforestation and demolition respectively.

Military Intelligence. If the Federation developed the Guntanks further, Zeon would've caught wind of this and just do the same if not better. The war would've dragged on much longer too and resources will definitely be scarce. Mobile Suits are the game changer, no matter how they're presented in most media. Plus these RTX-440s are supposed to be mass produced instead of the RX-75 until a fiasco regarding its intel occured, all this to cover up the existence of Project V until the Gundam first launched.

These are way practical than other walking mech.
Why are the lowest frequencies cut off or not in the mix? Vehicles this big, that are making the ground tremble are going to put out some sub-bass. Also, I can hear artifacts in the high frequencies that sound like the mix was at 128kbps at one point... or maybe some sound effects came from low resolution sources?

Guntanks don't get enough credit. Imo they are more practical and realistic than mobile suits. We could very well build something like this today if we wanted to.
That would be great if the Big Tray-class and Dabde-class land combat ships that appear in the story were put to practical use. They are things that cannot even be transported by existing ships or railways.

@@TheBigExclusiveIronicly, the OYW plays it straight. The main reason the Zeon earth offensives stalled was the Federation maintaining air supremacy. Feddie aircraft were leaps and bounds above the Dopp and Magellan Top. The Gaw carrier admittedly had them beat for a long range mobile carrier, but the Pegasus class would easily out perform it.
Not really, EFAF had upper hand through the whole War.
Before these monsters were deployed, we got to see Fed fighters tore through Zeke air units like they are made of paper.
Zeon air force was so beaten that we saw Federation transports regularly penetrate deep into Zeon occupied territories to supply units trapped there like White Base

I still believe in my head cannon that this is derivative of the Hildofr. Or we take their respective production worthiness, at least RTX had an accelerated development from the Hildofr. Hildofr was abandoned in the early months of the One Year War while North America was still under control by Zeon. Whereas RTX-440 is deployed in Odessa later in the One Year War during the Zeon retreat.
Head cannon pun was not intended, but a welcome laugh.
Imagine a gundam rts game
Hate to play devil's advocate, since this is one of the best guntank designs. But this thing would have ripped itself apart in 5 sec trying to pull off these maneuvers. Tanks don't drift easily on rough terrain, such as we see here. The Dom's would have easily devastated the whole unit, the Gouf might have struggled but still won in the end. These thigs are basically shown with full plot armor on, and don't give me the "but they died in the end" speal, they never would have made it to the battlefield unsupported as they were. It looks cool but this is still a rear line / support mech not a MBT model. Sorry it had to be said.

Why give them arms when you aren't going to give them hands? Wouldn't side turrets be more efficient than arms? Aside from the cool appearance, a traditional tank design would probably be more efficient and allows for more armor stacking than an upper torso on treads.
