I saw Senri play twice on my recent trip to Japan. She is incredible…an amazing player that can keep a groove and then pop up with an incredible fill or solo to blow you away. After one show, she and the other performers hung out, talking to fans and signing things. She was so nice and patient with everybody, including me and my poor Japanese. Senri also spent 5 or 10 minutes talking with a high school age girl who came with her parents to see her…she also gave the girl a set of her drumsticks. It was really fun to see and experience.

The guitar player is having a ball during the sax battle. The tenor sax and the bass are almost as big as the women playing them. The musicians are all great but whoever wrote the arrangement for this gets applause from me too. The drummer is a powerhouse!

Tenor saxophone: Miku Yonezawa. With her group: ruclips.net/video/p93pzxr_JRE/видео.html
Saw Jazz Avengers in Osaka: they burned the house down. Later, Miku Yonezawa in a very small club in Kyoto, maybe 30 seats - it was a religious experience. Jazz scene in Japan is purely amazing, with numbers of talented female musicians. Among the scene: Blue Note Tokyo All Star Jazz Orchestra, led by Erik Miyashiro and anchored by Senri Kawaguchi. Also includes Miho Terachi soprano sax w/Avengers. Jazz Avengers a tribute to drummer led Jazz Messengers w/Art Blakey.

Discovering this band has lad to a non zero amount of rabbit holes on each member of this group. They all have pretty impressive stuff before forming this group. Chizuru the guitarist has some pretty impressive stuff out there when she's not just there to be part of the rhythm section. Also the girl on the tenor sax(the biggest one) is another extremally talented person named Miku.

    • @MaartenT

Miku Yonezawa's albums (the couple I bought) are probably my favourite Jazz albums I own next to Senri's stuff (which I already was a fan of before discovering Japanese rock and metal music with Band-Maid a couple of years ago). Especially her latest album (Delight from 2023) and Exotic Gravity (from 2019) are absolutely fantastic.
Also, all of them are fantastic live both with the Jazz Avengers as with their solo projects or other projects in which they work together. I have cought a bunch of their livestreamed shows and they are all fantastic. A couple of other projects to check out with members of this band are 坐音 ZAON (with Senri and Ami, the Soprano Sax player (the small one), Jazz Fusion with traditional Japanese instruments) and Muses (with bassist Juna and a fantastic other Japanese young drummer in Kanade Sato). And obviously Senri's Kiyo*Sen is great as well.
Also the slightly related Tokyo Groove Jyoshi (which used to feature Juna Serita on bass and she sometimes still features as a guest) is worth checking out just as her work with blues guitarist Shoka Okubo called "Shoka Okubo Blues Project".

I immediately latched onto Miku's Tenor sax sound and that of Ami Nakazono (soprano sax) +1 for the other comment mentions of TGJ (Juna's previous band) and Muses- which Juna also plays for and and is lead by the incredible Rie a.k.a. Suzaku. you'll soon find out that these ladies have historically featured appearances in each other's projects too! I can't wait till you review another one of their sets!

I love all of them so much, I grew up playing piano, alto sax and tenor sax. Miku is my favorite tenor sax player, she's so awesome. there's no weak link in this group, they're all super stars. WaKaNa on the alto sax right next to Miku is also another fav. of mine. Any one of them could carry a live performance, together they are amazing. You may also like Tokyo Groove Jyoshi and Muses. flutter-tonging is one of the hardest things to do, it requires that you can roll your R's which I could never get down as a sax player. Miku's tone, breath control and tonguing is out of this world. ahhh. I have been listening to them for almost a year now. IDK why I did not think you'd be into Jazz. Senri put this group together, many of them like the rock scene also play with other groups; have their own projects, etc. amazing music culture there. I am so jealous. btw, there's a LOT more where that came from, there are more solos in other pieces etc. you will love a lot more than this if you enjoyed this song.

  • @Kevin6059
    @Kevin6059 Год назад +3

This is 🔥. And what makes it even cooler is when you think about how these solos are improvised so they're making it up on the spot. It feels so good as a player when you do that and it comes out really well. There's a risk involved so it can be scary but there's nothing like that feeling when you play something awesome.

Hey Ryan. Pleased to see you give The Jazz Avengers a listen. An exceptional group of musicians with, as you've mentioned, Juna Serita and Senri Kawaguchi among it's ranks with each member given a moment to shine. Juna Serita (bass) was also formerly a member of Soramimi alongside Murata Tamu, now in Nemophila. Quite the contrast to see Juna pursue Jazz/Fusion with the Avengers while Tamu chose to go the heavy route with Nemophila. This song could just as easily have been 15-20 minutes in length and I would not have averted my gaze for one second.✌️❤️🤘

Being a tenor sax player, i gotta say i really like the tenor sax players tone. And the stutter thing Graham mentioned sounded like a flutter tongue effect. It's where you touch the reed with your tongue but go past it and then bring your tongue back down. Also it's possible to do a different thing where you just touch lightly on the reed with your tongue so that you can move your tongue faster. Lastly, you can do a double tongue like a trumpet where its more of a "da-ga-da-ga" effect. But i think she did the flutter. One of the alto players sometimes plays tenor and gets a great tone too.

Not only Senri on drums but you got Juna Serita on bass (she was in Soramimi with Tamu Murata). Check out Juna's original "Hunter", live with most of the Jazz Avengers (minus Senri) on her official YT page. You want to talk about a filthy bass line!...Also fun fact about Juna; she's on a journey to master sax, drums, piano and guitar, just as well as she plays bass. She's a phenomenal talent!

    • @aboveaveragejoe156

That bass line on Hunter is 🔥🔥🔥‼️ It amazes me how young these kids are and the level of creativity and skill they have. I like Juna's stuff in the Jazz Avengers more than the funk stuff but her groove on Hunter is a great compromise between the two imo. She plays that nasty funky line but it's not over the top and still blends in well with the other avengers.

I hope they get to do a world tour and release a live DVD. Their album is cool, but whilst it's well-played as you'd expect it lacks the edge that you can only get in a live jazz performance. (side bar - Juna Serita has played with Tokyo Groove Jyoshi, is also part of Muses (a smaller cooler jazz-fusion ensemble) and is half of Addone with blues singer guitarist and drummer Shoka Okubo . Busy lady.

Juna Serita also has an other project with Shoka Okubo called Shoka Okubo Blues Project. Worth checking out if you haven't already.
The Jazz Avengers are quickly growing (especially for a Jazz band) and started adding English to some of their videos. Juna Serita and Senri speak some English, guitarist Chizuru Segawa tried her best as well. I believe some of the others have worked in the US as well for a short while (Juna certainly has), but I don't know how well they speak English. So they have noticed the international interest in them and I have a feeling they are trying to address it. Not bad for what was originally a one-off group for (I believe) a commercial or opening of a building named the Senri 7.

For sure, I can't speak on the others but I know Senri plays drums from when she was 5 (she is 26 now) including having recorded her first solo DVD when she was 11, she also has been posting videos on yt from when she was really young + she was voted in the top 500 drummers of drummerworld when she was 13 or so. In one of the interview type videos they did on their channel they asked about her hobbies and she said "drums" after thinking for a couple of seconds, she was basically born to play drums. I am sure most of the other musicians in this band are very similar to that, a lot of practicing and just a lot of talent. They basically live for their instrument.
