Now I know who Louis Johnson has incarnated as. I knew Japanese ladies could rock, but this level of funk is incredible and made me grin like a Cheshire Cat!😁

I love that Juna's solo goes through two "choruses". Once incredibly intense, and then she ups the ante. Pure rock and roll attitude (applied to funk music). Funny that as a bass and keyboard player my favourite current bassist and keyboardist both happen to be Japanese women - Juna and Hiromi Euhara, respectively. Look up Hiromi's cover of "I've Got Rhythm" from her Marciac solo concert and prepare to be blown away.

Yeah Ryan, original from Tower of Power, nearly the only funk stuff i listen to when i'm in the mood for, ok besides some Joss Stone 🥰. But as a bassplayer here and then you listen to some different things. I'm surprised you haven't listened to this earlier. And you can clearly say that not only rock and metal have found a new home in japan 🤘😁. Oh man i'm just groovin' now 🕺

Japan has a plethora of great bass players, and Juna is one of them !! I never paid much attention to jazz until i discovered Juna, who is highly in demand ( for obvious reasons ) 😏❤️🎸😎🤘 Because of Juna, I discovered another great bassist, Tal Wilkenfeld from Australia. She deserves a listen !

My favourite Japanese bass player is Misaki from SOKONINARU,

If you like great bass, you should check on FAMI. She has almost 700k subscription on her channel. She is the bassist of the band Lovebites. And released a lot of incredible videos. For exemple : Alien Alien cover.

Nice job on the intro lol.
This video though was a great gateway to the amazing jazz and blues scene in Japan. We're so lucky this stuff is easy to find.

I've been listening to these ladies for a while. They never disppoint and they are really skillful. For Korean music, I listen to Leenalchi and Luli Lee.

Tower of Power still tours and plays this song and they had their 50th anniversary a while back. Tokyo Groove has live videos of this in their tour.

Hell yes! I figured this would be the next one you did after the Jazz Avengers. TGJ is so underrated. hopefully the next patreon suggestion will be one of TGJ's originals. Really great to see you loved this one as much as we do.

A RUclips rabbit hole on female bass guitarists led me ultimately to Juna Serita and TGJ in their several subsequent manifestations about three years ago. And then, through a fluke connection I found Widi Ramahwati of VoB. Hell, two for the price of one! I still listen a lot to both bands. This version of What Is Hip? is just crazy good.

On the way I stumbled on the amazing Indian player Mohini Dey (worth a look). Juna has resurfaced in the Jazz Avengers alongside drummer wunderkind Senri Kawaguchi (her career is nothing short of sensational) and four sax players, a spin out from Senri's Seven. TGJ has settled down with new bass player Rina and drummer Mimi. While I'm on this tour d'horizon of Asian music, I might as well include Kiyo-Sen, a fusion band fronted by Kiyomi Otaka (long-time keyboardist with Cassiopeia) and the afore-mentioned Senri Kawaguchi. Check out the 14 minute live compilation of their bass player Yokiko Shibutani's solo and a solo from Senri with a blistering version of 2B Outbreak. Finally, the alto sax player with the Jazz Avengers, Ami Nakazono (she's the star), guests with Kiyo-Sen on a tune entitled Hairy Crab. Also, also, also, Jazz/classical pianist Hiromi. As for The Hu, Mongolian Metal... I'm sure you've encountered most of this and more and that you've better things to do than chase my Eastern obsession around RUclips. My thanks for such a great channel with such knowledgeable and considered analyses (they're better than reactions).

These women definitely live up to their name, don't they? Groovy AF. Sometimes they get one or another of the great sax players in their circle to join in - check out a performance or 2 with Harumo IMAI if you can.

The first band Juna Serita played bass was the heavy metal band Moth in Lilac. Later she left the band because heavy metal was not her thing. One of her successors in Moth in Lilac was Miho Rosana after Destrose broke up and Lovebites wasn't sure yet. Moth in Lilac is the band of one-handed guitarist Lisa 13.

I had no idea the Japanese culture understood FUNK. From a different culture and way on the other side of the world and they can play US Funk, BUT with a little Japanese Funk added in".

Juna left this band later on although she still plays as a guest instrumentalist during some of their concerts (Sax of all instruments even though she is still learning and doesn't consider herself a good sax player, I can not imagine doing that). The shamisen player is not part of the band, but they have used shamisen as a guest instrument during most of their shows that I have seen for a couple of tracks.
The drummer that played during the time this was recorded left as well, but both the new bassist and drummer are amazing musicians in their own right. The new bassist Rina Hoshino sometimes plays with guitarist Rie a.k.a. Suzaku (who is also in a jazz fusion band, Muses, with Juna Serita) who mainly plays metal or jazz fusion and Rina is also in a pop-rock band called
Elfriede. Their new drummer Mimi is a very good drummer and even sings in some tracks as well.
I have watched a bunch of streamed concerts by them and they have always been amazing. I believe they also have a pretty recent full concert on their youtube channel as well (if it's still there). I should actually check if they are doing streamed concerts nowadays since it has been a while and they are always a blast.

Have you tried a shamisen yet? Playing with a bachi (pick thingy) is so alien, and hard, for me anyway.
