you can really tell that he loves to play, from his technique, to the faces he makes, to how happy he is to talk about the instruments, keep up the good work!
Proud owner of an SRFF806 here! I love it and would recommend it to anyone looking to get a multiscale Bass. Even though I have to admit Dingwall Basses are better.
i have one of the Ibanez SRFF806 Fanned Fret 6 String Bass since October last year and it is now my go to bass over a couple of ibanez BTBs an ibanez srx 400 and even a status stealth 5 string. Great value and it felt right and sounded right from the word go.
Really, Really enjoying these segments! Nathan is awesome! Great player and great personality! As a bass player I hope you continue this! There's so much bass gear out there for review!
That was very funny and entertaining, guys! Great job, keep doing these! On the fanned fret thing: I just started playing bass and immediately noticed the problem with the low strings, in my case on a 4-string with the E string. The A string sounds very tight but the E string sounds not as definded as I would like it to be. Also it usually feels floppy compared to the other 4 strings. To compensate that I started experimenting with different string gauges to get equal tension on all strings and had to buy custom sets since the regular sets don't consider that in many cases. There are exceptions of course like D'Addario Balanced Tension sets but that would limit my choice of strings to D'Addario. I really believe that fanned frets are the future for stringed instruments, especially bass because it obviously helps tremendously with the low notes. My next bass will definitely a fanned fret one. Not sure about Ibanez but rather more a Dingwall.
I swapped my regular fretted 5 string bass for one of these fanned beauties. And so far the action and the playability of the B string has been really good.
Nathen totally said Jizz right after he said jazz and that is totally correct. If you haven't guessed yet, musicians are totally and ridiculously uncouth and hilarious. So extra kudos for being yourself there Nathan. I like you as a person and would love to jam with you when I come to visit Great Britannica. Now near the end of the show when Lee tries to assume you will participate in a looper type activity and you so eloquently bow out and let Lee know where he can stick it, Lee has a lot of class and rolls with the punches. Hee hee and it was very enjoyable. Thank you Lee for giving Nathan his room to operate and having so much class. I know its your show so to speak and you came off as a guy with a sense of humor and grace. Thank you. I am really enjoying all the bass and Ibanez shows. Nathan, keep doing what your doing cause real nigaz is watching and your the real deal brother.
I tried one of the 5-strings in a local store and was completely surprised by how you really don't have to adapt to the fanned frets. Just don't think about it and start playing. Also, I found it easier to play overall, since the different scales kinda follow the natural motion of your fingers: When you stretch out your fingers, their tips usually move apart. The fanned frets match this really well. To me, it was very comfortable to play.
Dutch bassist Hennie Vrienten from the band Doe Maar uses a fanned bass for about five years now (simple four string, he uses it for reggae). It looks awesome! Never saw it before, but I really like the look of it!
There are a couple of other advantages that you've overlooked. 1. Along with the better tension whilst drop tuning, you get more accurate intonation like that of a piano. 2. It fits the ergonomics of your band's movements along the fretboard, hence the comfortable feel that is surprisingly less awkward than expected. I do own a SRFF805, and it is the THE most comfortable instrument I have ever owned. (Bass or guitar)
I had that same problem with my Ashula when I got that. I recently ordered an Ashula which Ibanez just came out with and it took 3 months after they were released before I got mine
Fanned fret basses have been around for a couple of decades now. The theory is that having more tension on the low pitch strings brightens them, and less tension on the treble strings softens the tone, making the sound more consistent across the strings. I've long thought that the whole 35" scale thing or B strings being "unusably floppy" was a load of bull. I've played 6-string bass for 17 years and used 34" and 35" scales. The 35" scale is unacceptably tiring, so I sold mine. I also use .120 B strings. They're easy enough to control. If you think a light B string is too floppy, you need to lighten your touch. Hugely thick B strings cause more problems than they solve. Ibanez does one think that I've only seen on one other maker: the fretboard has more relief carved into it on the bass side than the treble side. When the C string side is almost straight, the B string side has enough curve to prevent dragging. That way the E and B strings can be kept close to the fingerboard without rattling.
the thing with fanned fret is that they don't need to be dropped, the 35.5 scale and 37 on dingwal is ment for better intonation while staying in standard B tuning
Multi-scale is way better term to use than fanned fret. It explains it really. Some people are still confusing this with the true temperament fretting.
If you have a 6-string bass then it's like mandatory to play stuff by Primus and Dream Theatre, Les Claypool and John Myung are bloody badasses and they're two of my absolute favourite bassists and two of my biggest influences
You dont need to get that low, flobby B-string on 5 string bass is a common problem that is fixed by longer scales. The fan fret allows it to make long scales more ergonomic and easier to play on the long run.
if the frets were arced away from his hands (think if this was upsidedown) it would be possible. but its in the natural arc of his hands and fingers. he isnt and shouldnt be playing like a slide guitar, so it works. if you have bad fret hand work, this will definately show that; bring that to light. great video.
Missed out on getting one of these 'cuz dipshit former boss didn't pay me until 8 months later. 2 years on, every listing is either sold or in a different continent. Fingers crossed one of my offers gets accepted, this bass is everything I want. I'm also seriously eyeing the headless version, but I like to play around with behind the nut harmonics from time to time.
I'm really impressed with the price. That's a massive value for what you get. Are those pickups good versions of Bartolini's? Or are they low end productions?
Captain - Warwick do the "Dark Lord" string set with a low string at... .175 - designed for low F# tuning. Payton Strings, Circle K Strings, Dingwall, all do fan fret sets. D'addario Super Long Scale will fit a 35.5 scale (in fact they'll fit up to 36. But they are just slightly too short for a full 37 inch scale Dingwall).
Wicked outtakes haha I'll be honest though I am a little confused?? I play a 5 string Bass and all the guitarists I've been in bands with only use 6 strings.. some times they down tune but this is why I use a 5 string so I don't have to down tune?! It was the whole reason I bought a 5 string in the first place?! That and it's nice to have that extra bottom end! I don't think you will see the 4's having this type of fretting and probably why Dave H got a 5 string because Bea was using a Baritone and the 4 string just wasn't cutting it! Although I am liking the idea of the fan fret! And I'm seriously considering giving them a go! Impressed with Ibanez's :-p
back in the day, this fanned frets bass and guitar from dingwall are $5000 (i think) ... i remember the only couple guy who actually afford it in my country and all of them are multi platinum artists/band 😁😋
At least for D'addario strings, you'll need to get super long scale. I know D'addario says long scales should be enough, but really they are not. And yes I own srff806 myself so I have the first hand experience on this matter.
Yes, from the sort of bigger string manufacturers. Then there's at least Kalium strings, that lets you pick custom sets and I believe their gauges go as high as .200 or something like that :D
Tried this bass at guitar guitar (5 string version) felt way different to my Stingray. I was gonna get it however the skunk stripes on the back put me off from buying it as i could feel it as i was playing up and down the neck.
I already have to order strings online because my local shops have shit for selection when it comes to bass strings. If I got a fan fret I worry I would never be able to walk down to the guitar store to buy strings! (Because of the long scale of the low B.)
They go way bigger now for sure. For many years I had a 5 string with the bottom string tuned to G (didn't get used much, made for some interesting textures when I did) and I would order a .145 from juststrings.com. Nowadays you see stuff way heavier that that gauge even pretty commonly.
Hey Nathan, what does it feel like to play that bass? Do you have to think about playing the fan frets or is it just natural playing it? Like it's not any different... What do you say, or anyone that has played one... Thanks!
Just to mention : The fanned fret system allready existed on Mandolins, luths, and other "medieval" instruments 'till early 1500 (if my memory is correct, which is pretty much questionnable). So this is actually NOT an invention, just a rediscovery.
I'd encourage anyone to at least try a fanned fret/multiscale instrument. It took me literally 5 minutes to get used to my Dingwall and since then, I've had serious GAS for another!
Well that detuning question is debatable, because one of most popular metal bass guitars are Fender Jazz ones and they are often used below initially intended tuning.
Nathan was the perfect person to have for this series, his playing is brilliant no matter what bass it is.
Just when I'm complaining about lack of coverage on this bass, you bring this out. Andertons strikes again!
Sooo much better than normal TV and I don't even play bass...yet.
Get a guitar, man ;)
DO IT
Yessir. The world needs more bass players!
Yep, bass is where it's at!
you can really tell that he loves to play, from his technique, to the faces he makes, to how happy he is to talk about the instruments, keep up the good work!
Proud owner of an SRFF806 here! I love it and would recommend it to anyone looking to get a multiscale Bass. Even though I have to admit Dingwall Basses are better.
Played the fiver version. Very cool! The B-string is MASSIVE!!! Nathan is so right. Don't look at the frets and you're gold. Great stuff gentlemen.
i have one of the Ibanez SRFF806 Fanned Fret 6 String Bass since October last year and it is now my go to bass over a couple of ibanez BTBs an ibanez srx 400 and even a status stealth 5 string. Great value and it felt right and sounded right from the word go.

The captain can lay down a beat! It's in you, the drums are calling.
Most of his family are drummers if I remember correctly
+Birdy Wings father and grandfather who started the store.
+Bruce Hewat and brother
+CrazyJoe it's in his very DNA!
Bruce Hewat Or maybe he just played the drums when he was young ;)
That was very funny and entertaining, guys! Great job, keep doing these!

That drum machine jam was hilarious and badass!
nice bit of drum and bass going there for a while..lol
Best I've heard Nathan play so far :)
Relistened: the section after 18:06 is awesome
Nathen totally said Jizz right after he said jazz and that is totally correct. If you haven't guessed yet, musicians are totally and ridiculously uncouth and hilarious. This is the episode when I realized that Nathan is a bass-GOD!
He is great indeed. But if Nathan is “a bass god”, then what does that make his brother......a Bass Supreme Being?🤣
love the jam ,with Lee on the Beats ! That needs to be a regular feature

Best bass vid so far. I know Nathan can play but seems reserved on here. He really should have a drummer to feature the delicious bass.
This was a treat to watch
Best 'All About The Bass' yet!!!!
This is one of the coolest things i've seen from Ibanez. I'd buy it if Andertons was in the US.
Nathan's getting good at presenting now. He's really grown into the show.
There are a couple of other advantages that you've overlooked.
1. Along with the better tension whilst drop tuning, you get more accurate intonation like that of a piano.

I do own a SRFF805, and it is the THE most comfortable instrument I have ever owned. (Bass or guitar)
Captain Lee holding it down on the MPC !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
18:00 That breakbeat style shit was really good :)
DJ Lee is actually a real DnB don, funny enough.
This is really fun stuff and informative at the same time. Great job and thanks a lot!
So is Nathan related to old thunder thumbs, Mark King? They look alike and play bad ass bass
Yes, they are brothers. Nathan also plays guitar for Level 42
+Jake Worrell haha
+Jake Worrell no way
Saw Nathan at 2 of the Frost* gigs. Awesome bass playing.
keen to see more drum machine and hopefully a bass loop video in the future!
I had that same problem with my Ashula when I got that. I recently ordered an Ashula which Ibanez just came out with and it took 3 months after they were released before I got mine
I own the 5 string version. Absolutely fantastic bass.
Ibanez makes some gorgeous guitars/basses.
Could you tell me the newer fan fret version and the best ibanez 6 strings bass. please and thanks
@@rhoodj you naughty boy... GIYF, haha
Really loved that jam there in the end!
This video made me realize that I needed to select larger gauges for my custom string set, thanks.

You're right about the quality and price of Ibanez!
the thing with fanned fret is that they don't need to be dropped, the 35.5 scale and 37 on dingwal is ment for better intonation while staying in standard B tuning
Dude he SLAYS that beat at 18:00 !!! That's my jam, gimme a whole album of that haha.
Multi-scale is way better term to use than fanned fret. It explains it really. Some people are still confusing this with the true temperament fretting.
Looks like a Rob Scallon camera on normal frets.
I have a Ibanez SR500, and I tuned it to drop A. Wasn't too floppy on the 5th string at all!
If you have a 6-string bass then it's like mandatory to play stuff by Primus and Dream Theatre, Les Claypool and John Myung are bloody badasses and they're two of my absolute favourite bassists and two of my biggest influences
I have it on good authority from Billy Sheehan that Rotosound does have a set of strings called Drop Zone that allow you to tune down to F#
You dont need to get that low, flobby B-string on 5 string bass is a common problem that is fixed by longer scales. The fan fret allows it to make long scales more ergonomic and easier to play on the long run.
17:35 is gold, srsly, Nathan needs to do this stuff more!!
superb humour, great skills, terrific bass, next on my list!!
Great playing...great show
Got the fivestring and loving it!
16:50 when he said "hit me, man, hit me" i really hoped hed start playing 'hit me with your rhythm stick'
Bless your soul, Ian.
if the frets were arced away from his hands (think if this was upsidedown) it would be possible. but its in the natural arc of his hands and fingers. he isnt and shouldnt be playing like a slide guitar, so it works. if you have bad fret hand work, this will definately show that; bring that to light.

and seeing lee and nathan didnt know the d'adarrio super long scale pro steels strings work a treat
I want a full album of MC Cap-10 and Nathan jamming!
damn... that korg part was great. i'd love to see some more of that in further videos
I play guitar and this makes me want to pick up a 5 string multiscale bass
Everything about Nathan's slightly laddish grinning humour tells you right away, this is Mark King's brother. :)
Nice playing, Capt!
Capt'n looks great with the dimension bass. You should pick one up
I like how the angle of the frets make the neck look twisted.
I'm really impressed with the price. That's a massive value for what you get. Are those pickups good versions of Bartolini's? Or are they low end productions?
He found his groove at 18:07 so lushhh 👌
Where has this Nathan been? More like this!
A great video, keep 'em coming!

Dave.
Bands like Periphery play in drop Ab and beyond, so fanned fret is almost a necessity in that scenario.
Holy shit, I didn't realize he's the bass player from frost. Badass band!
back in the day, this fanned frets bass and guitar from dingwall are $5000 (i think) ... i remember the only couple guy who actually afford it in my country and all of them are multi platinum artists/band 😁😋
Oh my lord in heaven. Andertons stocks these? I'VE BEEN HUNTING FOR ONE!!
Awesome video. That part around 8 minutes was awesome. Got a name for that beat or where I can find it?
That song/beat at the end made me feel like I was playing GTA III and listening to one of the radios!
I love these videos
At least for D'addario strings, you'll need to get super long scale. I know D'addario says long scales should be enough, but really they are not. And yes I own srff806 myself so I have the first hand experience on this matter.
I've heard a similar thing from another fanned fret player recently. It's really hard to find fitting strings, he said.
Yes, from the sort of bigger string manufacturers. Then there's at least Kalium strings, that lets you pick custom sets and I believe their gauges go as high as .200 or something like that :D
Can you review some bass compressor pedals please? Especially the T.C. Electronic SpectraComp would be really interesting.
Greetings from Germany
Perhaps a comparison between an srff806 and an sr806 would best illustrate the ff difference.
Tried this bass at guitar guitar (5 string version) felt way different to my Stingray. I was gonna get it however the skunk stripes on the back put me off from buying it as i could feel it as i was playing up and down the neck.
Now I like that fanfret Ibanez bass better than the headless ones
Lee is so into that drum machine near the end...
I always thought fanned fret was for better intonation rather than for down tuning? Maybe both.
I mean, it allows for better tension when downtuning without overstretching the high strings, so that's one benefit
The only thing that would improve intonation would be true temperament frets
I already have to order strings online because my local shops have shit for selection when it comes to bass strings. If I got a fan fret I worry I would never be able to walk down to the guitar store to buy strings! (Because of the long scale of the low B.)
That mark amp behind it has a lot to do wih sound too .
Thanx!🙂
10:13 Captain: So all the bum notes were intentional?
11:19 Nathan You have to buy special curved strings.
Great English sense of humor :)
5 sting music man in drop a, ran through a 4x10 trace Elliot cab sounds pretty tight
what string gauge though? it surely isn't .45
+Dylan Collins I'm not sure, but they felt pretty tight, probably slightly higher gauge. I'll ask the guy next time I see him
+Kayla “Kurisu” Deards yeah, I'd say they're higher than .45 considering they tend to get very floppy around the drop C mark
DJ Cap10 laid down some awesome grooves hehe
they make basses with F# strings and C# strings and even farther, so I'm sure they make strings bigger than the 130 of a typical low B string
They go way bigger now for sure. For many years I had a 5 string with the bottom string tuned to G (didn't get used much, made for some interesting textures when I did) and I would order a .145 from juststrings.com. Nowadays you see stuff way heavier that that gauge even pretty commonly.

Fanfretted guitars at Andertons TV ?
Fantastic vid guys, imformative funny. More electro beats jams please! XD
I'd encourage anyone to at least try a fanned fret/multiscale instrument. It took me literally 5 minutes to get used to my Dingwall and since then, I've had serious GAS for another!
Holy shit Nathan King! #Frost*
I think that Widen the Hole is playing Coachella next year...
„special curved freds“ love it! 🤣
It's also about intonation. Guitars have inherent problems with intonation that other instruments don't have or have solved in other ways.
wikichris no. It doesn't have much to do with intonation at all
But does it parp?
Great, now I wanna have a Korg Electribe :-{}
alright lads, any chance of doing a Source Audio Shockwave overdrive pedal review? Thanks
could Lee and Nathan get on the epiphone Tobias there's only two standard and deluxe iv
Well that detuning question is debatable, because one of most popular metal bass guitars are Fender Jazz ones and they are often used below initially intended tuning.
Man this guy is EXACTLY what anyone would imagine a english Bassist to be like.
Zac Miller I think of a guy like Cronos, from Venom
Is there a four string version of this model
