12:15 I've been playing bass on and off for 5-6 years and could never really push forward until very recently, and one of the things that has alluded me is this exact slapping thing. My technique is kinda all over the place and now i know what to practice holy crap.
It is just a pleasure to see how much fun you have doing the videos lately. I stopped watching on a regular basis a while ago because they seemed a little "on the dry side" for me back then. But now I'm happy I've given your channel my attention back. Keep it groovin'! :-)
Well... you’d certainly be king of your own inner one, anyway. I am in agreement with your statement... and Admire enthusiasm and consistent working inspiration, brought on by hard work and dedication to a craft. Possessing these things at one time... brought my Musical reach to where it is today... and I am thankful. Now... I only need dwell there again...
Love your stuff man. after 15 years of playing bass, I'm just now learning music theory from my wife. Between you, Adam Neely and her I'm finding that I can actually learn something. Thanks for the knowledge man!
Thanks Scott for all you do for the bass community! Your academy is one of a kind! I would love to see SBL become a place for all musicians (guitarists, drummers, keys, etc.) to learn. My band mates are jealous of how easy you make it for me.
I gotta' say, as an academy member, Scott Devine and the Team truly deserve an award for his/their contribution to musical and bass learning AND appreciation world-wide. World-class Musical Ambassadors!! Thank you. Jeff BC, Canada.,
Great stuff Scott. I've been playing bass for almost 50 years and I learn something every time I check out your vids. Your love of the bass and music in general is obvious and infectious. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to more bass adventures!
I love your videos!!!!! This video leads to me to the question why do you suggest the pointer finger to initially pop? This technique would suggest otherwise? You seem to be tall with big hands. I'm more comfortable popping with my middle finger in general, how do you feel about that?
It's so amazing how you outline every little detail of musical concepts, and your way of simplifying things for us is beyond measure! Thank you so much Scott :)
Brilliant lesson Scott & I'm not even playing bass. 14.5k views in one day and 14 dislikes by people who think there is no "content" in slapping. They forget Larry invented slap to bring in the percussive element out of necessity. Really enjoyed this as I do all of your work. Inspring.
Wow, you're really a great Teacher.. I usually don't write below RUclips Videos and rarely like something on YT (im kinda lazy sometimes) - but the fact that your content is so good and your personality is so kind made me lose control about myself and now im here, writing you a comment, that hopefully will reach, and please you. (By including this fact i don't want to state that my regards were therefore more valuable - i just wanted to inform you, that the power of your personality had the force to influence me over distances and moved me to do something i usually wouldn't do). Thank you very, very much for your lessons, kind sir. Greetings from Germany.
I love it when you realize how fast you are playing and smile ....you my good sir are a true gentleman and a scholar and a very fine teacher and musician ..
If it wasn't for you,and others like yourself, I would never be able to progress and learn these things like this...Thank you immensely for everything that you teach!!!!! So appreciative!
Dude is a beast..reminds of a player I know named Buddy Pearson of Freek Johnson.. Thanks Scott for all you are doing to make the world safe for better bass players:P
Ridiculous being the operative, Scott. Amazing stuff you do there, making it sound so simple and then showing us what a locomotive it can become. Wonderfull stuff! Thnx mate!
Nice that you gave a mention to Alain Caron. My all time fav bass player. Fist time I heard him and the rest of UZEB was in a bar watching how my beer was fizzing from the bottom end of his 5 string bass. It made me buy a bass almost immediately I was so inspired. I already played guitar fairly well, but bass like that was a whole nother thing. I still play and love both instruments.
You pull the best faces! Started sounding like Les Claypool after (well, maybe including) the "Ahhhhh!" at 17:55. Thank you so much for this video! I have owned a bass for a very long time (I don't think Crate makes basses anymore, HA!) and now I'm one step closer to being able to say I actually play one!
I started playing bass (upright) in 1975! I started playing electric bass in 1979! We were happy when cassette tapes came around because we could then record individual songs from different albums onto one mix tape and create set lists for the band which meant we could take those recordings home to woodshed rather than playing the album 50+ times during rehearsal to learn new songs. Kids today are CLUELESS to how EASY they have it now!
I just recently discovered this channel. Very cool. I've been playing a long time, and while most of what I have seen Scott covering is not new to me, refreshers can be helpful, and I just like listening to his accent. lol..... I subscribed. :)
Really great stuf Scott! Very good content and easy to understand. Plus your attitude and encouraging persona makes all the difference. Please keep them coming !
Thanks for your knowledge. I have been playing Guitar for fifty years and today is the firstTime that I have understood how Bass players could make those strange slapping sounds from their instruments ! What a discovery !!! 👍👍👍
Great Video!! I have truley enjoyed watching the videos you have put out while in New York. What a great group of highly diverse musicians that are playing in these videos. Keep them coming!!
hey! been watching ur videos for a while now...realy like them.... n noticed that u hv taken off ur gloves ..luks u hv recoverd from ur shaky hand prblm....keep it up brother !!!
Love your videos! You are my fave You Tube channel! Your passion for bass always shows, along with your very British sense of humor. (humour?) Love Rufus' playing, especially his speed, articulation, and most of all, his tone! Keep posting these videos!
Thats is a really Cool Paint Job looks like a 60's Muscle Car Color. That Fits that Jazz looking Bass w/the Crome pot plate. What is that color called?
Scott i got bit bad my new Tobias 4 string bass has me fingers blistering i can't put it down this is a inspirational Bass I was Larry Graham for second lol. These Bass lessons have my Bass side playing Bass like I haven't in years… i play guitar or did lol.
Something a friend told me when I first started was that if you keep you ring and pinky finger together it help with control and getting a proper slap movement down
Sneaky is what you are. This Thumb, slap, pop, pip, pope, index, middle, thumb, etc. Being a Trumpet player you guys are sneaky. For me is slur, single, double, triple tonguing, and embouchure/breathing tightening-loosening and so forth. Music itself is just awesome 👏 😎
Love that flipped bass idea. :)) Quiet fun for developing the basic right hand 'percussive' rhythm. Later, I found Jayen Varma video on TEDx. He's combining slap with an Indian tabla technique, which is also cool to dig into.
Are you doing any gigs while you're in New York? I live in Williamsburg in Brooklyn and I'd love to see you play while you're there. You're enthusiasm is contagious mate and there's a reason why you have the largest online bass community/group/following because you seem like you're having so much fun with it and really that's what music and life are all about. Legend!
I'm a guitar player and I'm really enjoying the slapping stuff (that I'm applying to my guitarplaying as well) Fun thing is that I saw a guitar player, Tosin Abasi, do the middle finger slap thing first before I saw an actual bass player do it
Great stuff as always. Just a thought... if you’re using the doublethumb technique you will probably find it more effective when you strike the string below the fretboard. The upstroke of the thumb causes the string to slap back onto the fretboard similar to a finger pluck, rather than the rebound contact produced by the downstroke:) *edit... after thinking about it, I believe the doublethumb technique might be impossible when you’re striking the fretboard
The Reddings, a classic album and I thought everybody knew about that one. The awakening being the track to play. Heard it live in Amsterdam and it's fantastic. But I actually like the whole album. They made another 5 albums after this debut.
Who do you mention at 14:48? Lane Caremba??? Anyway love your work Scott, gotta have slapping in your arsenal even if you don't like it. I personally love it and have been playing bass for 15 years and only now just got started on double thumbing. I too learnt the bass using whatever VHS tape I could find and now you've made it SO much easier for everyone else just to get their head around what is actually going on with some of these master players. Keep up the great work mate!
I've been playing air bass for almost a month since I can't afford to buy a real one yet. and I gotta say I got pretty good at slapping lol I can slap for a long time without getting tired haha, probably when I'll buy a real one it'll be a little different though
I figured out what we used to call the 'left hand pats' technique in the late eighties (yeah, when we only had VHS...) - not least because it was the key to a lot of Mark King's flashier triplet moments. I've never figured out double-thumbing though, and not sure I ever will. Ultimately I'm not convinced some of these percussive techniques end up being very musical though...
First thing I'd say is your lesson videos are great and simple :) learnt a lot from you! Now the thing is, I can't understand how exactly are you fitting in 5 notes(normal or dead) in 4 counts. What I'm doing is 1 2 3 4 &, where 4 and & is the double pop. But mine doesn't sound like yours :3 It'll be great if you'd explain that. And thanks a lot for the videos :D you're awesome
Thx Scott for sharing a bit of this Rufus' time + all your slappy things ;-). Rufus's great player and he's always having great sense of humor. See you in the shed...Cheers.
The only thing I am having trouble replicating is the tone of the left hand tapping, is there a specific technique breakdown for this? Does string gauge/action/material/wounding affect that tone and what is the best choice? Just to make sure I am practicing it correctly
Scott, you naughty man, It would be a stunningly great coup if one day you could get Stephen Bruner / Thundercat on your series. I think many people would find that one fascinating and educational (ok, well *I* would). Playing with Stanley Clarke at 14, I believe. Also he has a new album out on the 24th. By the way - *THANK YOU* for your dedication and constant enthusiasm, and also for all those behind the scenes too. cheers. You had a video player? Luxury!
I love how when musicians talk to eachother about their instruments they mix their speaking phrases together with melodic phrases
12:15 I've been playing bass on and off for 5-6 years and could never really push forward until very recently, and one of the things that has alluded me is this exact slapping thing. My technique is kinda all over the place and now i know what to practice holy crap.

Frankior Exactly the same for me
^ for sure! love to see him having fun
Me too..;-))
Totally agree. Great stuff!
Yeah, so much fun just watching :)
If I had as much enthusiasm for life as you do for bass, I'd be king of this galaxy.
Well... you’d certainly be king of your own inner one, anyway. I am in agreement with your statement... and Admire enthusiasm and consistent working inspiration, brought on by hard work and dedication to a craft. Possessing these things at one time... brought my Musical reach to where it is today... and I am thankful. Now... I only need dwell there again...
That’s the best compliment anyone could receive. Brought a smile to my face.
Love your stuff man. after 15 years of playing bass, I'm just now learning music theory from my wife. Between you, Adam Neely and her I'm finding that I can actually learn something. Thanks for the knowledge man!
9:00 where the slap part starts.
Thanks Scott for all you do for the bass community! Your academy is one of a kind! I would love to see SBL become a place for all musicians (guitarists, drummers, keys, etc.) to learn. My band mates are jealous of how easy you make it for me.
Ahhhh thanks Patrick! :)
As a guitar player i love watching bass players approaches to rhythms, Rufus sounded amazing
I gotta' say, as an academy member, Scott Devine and the Team truly deserve an award for his/their contribution to musical and bass learning AND appreciation world-wide. World-class Musical Ambassadors!!

at what age did you start playing bass
Have played guitar for 40+ years and finally decided to take on the bass. Delighted to have found you! You are amazing, talented and funny! Thanks!
This should be required viewing for all getting into bass. Tons of priceless info here. Thank you ! ! !
I love your videos!!!!! This video leads to me to the question why do you suggest the pointer finger to initially pop? This technique would suggest otherwise? You seem to be tall with big hands. I'm more comfortable popping with my middle finger in general, how do you feel about that?

Lol
Just recently picked up my bass again and just wanted to tell you how entertaining and unpretentious your videos are. Thanks. :)

"it's really simple" as my fingers fall off.
LOL! Exactly like how *I* feel!
'THAT'S ALL IT IS!' he says....yeah right THAT and about 2,000 hours of practice..
@@kennethgibson5728 better get started then
*Has flashbacks to ray and frank guitar lessons*

Thank you sooo much!!! The improvement is already showing and I feel so mich better about my slap bass!

Dank memes for edgy teens
I never thought about fretting hand slap, that's what I've been missing from my slap technique. Thanks!
Every bass player in India loves you! God bless
Just picking up the bass after years of playing guitar. Great lesson, thanks!
I watched most of the video but all I really needed was this 11:56 thank you so much!
Cause I love da bass and Scott! I'm still rocking through the harmonic layering course!
Rufus is just outrageously good!
He is Trevor... great to see you on here man! :)
Hey thanks Trevor-I think you'll dig the stuff we got filmed that day-it was a blast!

My favourite Bass channel by far.
Love your videos Scott. You are such a great teacher and bass player!
Good and smart

you literally make playing bass so attractive! it may be my new favorite instrument.

Great lesson. How close to the rear frets are your strings? Thanks.
This is the best video I've seen in a while. I first learned the double thumb technique from Victor Wooten.
Wicked tutorial!!! Loved it and am DEFINITELY gonna get this groove on! 😎
Scott he is an amazing bassman, thank you for taping !!!!
can you make a video regarding the double thumping technique I have many problems with it
excellent teaching session. Thanks.
I'm a guitar player and I'm really enjoying the slapping stuff (that I'm applying to my guitarplaying as well)
Fun thing is that I saw a guitar player, Tosin Abasi, do the middle finger slap thing first before I saw an actual bass player do it
alright, i actually learned something. i always hought it's just thumb and pop. now i know there's a muted one too. explains alot

I am digging the editing of this video! Bravo/a!
Great stuff Scott !🙏🏻✌🏻️🎸👍🏿

Hey Scott, no gloves? Does that mean it's getting better? Love your videos, as always!
I love it when they say: "It's so easy!". Yep, it's easy when you practice minimum 2-3 hours a day for several months maybe :D
Exactly.
Outstanding explanation...Great lesson!
Rufus's phrasing is crazy awesome!
I really like his bass, very nice look, quality and I bet feel.
Mr. Devine you are the best!!!
thank you
I've been playing air bass for almost a month since I can't afford to buy a real one yet. and I gotta say I got pretty good at slapping lol I can slap for a long time without getting tired haha, probably when I'll buy a real one it'll be a little different though
Thanks!! I always wondered and wanted to know!! YOU ROCK!!
The first excercise helped me a lot.. Sitting everyday in dat bus listening to monuments origin of escape and cant stop moving ma thumb .... XD
Great lesson, much appreciated.
Hey Scott, got a weird request: how about a tutorial video on slap bass and/or killer fill-ins for lefties playing upside down (i.e., Jimmy Haslip)?
Bloody good video segment mate....!
I figured out what we used to call the 'left hand pats' technique in the late eighties (yeah, when we only had VHS...) - not least because it was the key to a lot of Mark King's flashier triplet moments. It'll be great if you'd explain that.
And thanks a lot for the videos :D you're awesome
you make me understand things , thnx so much
What is that at 5:55 ? Artificial harmonics with out a pick? Sounds awesome...
Charlie Butler I think he's using is right hand's thumb to play them as a guitarist ;)
yeah i think with the thumb he's muting where the 24th fret should be
Mute with thumb as you pluck your string
Very cool Scott, cheers.
Thx Scott for sharing a bit of this Rufus' time + all your slappy things ;-). Rufus's great player and he's always having great sense of humor. See you in the shed...Cheers.
Cheers Pascal! :)
Gotta be my favourite video so far!
Very well explained! Thanks.
Parabéns!! Dicas sensacionais!! Didática simples!!
Fantastic video. finally I saw the thing. thank you so much man.
What brand is that Orange Bass?? Love that passive sound.
you sooo greate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! awssomee!!! thanks for share!! gracias desdes mexico!!
Thank you 78 just got my first bass
I love that orange bass!! Is that for sale?
Wow...dude you explain stuff soooo well....the triplet thing had me stupped. I thought you needed like 7 fingers....lol...thanks...!!
stumped *
Ooh Scott, you are a slapper. . .
M i n d b l o w i n g
(I slapped like on your comment 😉)
When you do slap with the fretting hand, could you hammer on a note?
Dude! Sweet! Im trying to improve my speed and this is great.
Thank you for the slap tech !!!
Your left hand slap/tap sounds very powerful.... could that be a pickup thing? Or is my left hand just weak?
The only thing I am having trouble replicating is the tone of the left hand tapping, is there a specific technique breakdown for this? Does string gauge/action/material/wounding affect that tone and what is the best choice? Just to make sure I am practicing it correctly
Love you playing! And i can learn a lot from you :)

I love the title of this video! 😁
Scott showing us the middle finger and everybody´s happy :-)
Nice tone of your bass
Dunetune by Level 42,, was Mark Kings play on Stanley Clarkes style..
