    Impressive work here, my brother. To knock out three of those four phrases in such a short sitting is killer. Loved going down memory lane at the top of the video. Honored to be featured in your series like this. ❤

      Scottay… I think I only got 3… haha. I’m glad you liked the video though, it’s such a beautiful song. I’m looking forward to getting back to it once the blister on my pointer finger heals up :P. It’s crazy how long it’s been since the guitar merchant 😳

    As someone who is really into a lot of more underground music, its so cool actually seeing someone learn a song the same way i often need to. A singular recording and a whole lot of determination. Its such a fun and rewarding process every time.

    Man your concentration on a single song is impressive. When playing a new song I find myself having to take breaks with something that feels more comfortable. Great Job!!

      😂😂😂 that’s kind of just how my brain works. It’ll latch on to one thing and pummel it until I’ve got it or until my brain short circuits… whichever happens first :P

    I have talked to my guitar teacher about diminishing returns. He said he doesn’t experience that. If he practices he just keeps getting better, but he said he does have times if he steps away that he is better when he comes back. I felt crazy because I can get worse the more I practice sometimes.🤣 Only on really hard songs…I have to take lots of breaks when that happens. Just the way my brain works.🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @ChrisHayzelmusic

    Thanks for sharing, Chris, and great job on learning the song by ear. You made a good point about using videos of the performance to help when figuring out how to play it, something which I rarely do but should integrate into my practice.

      Oh yeah! RUclips is a godsend when it comes to learning music… it’s definitely an upgrade from the old days of sitting and listening to a record and trying to figure out how someone might have fretted something. Though I suppose I’m not learning entirely by ear at this point.

    This is so great. Thank you for sharing your learning process. It is really encouraging seeing you work through the skills you struggle with and how you approach getting the song under your fingers. I am still just learning the basics, but it is really nice to see your approach. Cheers.

    You're amazing, I really didn't expect you to be able to absorb this much of the song in such a short time. This really tells me I need to improve my concentration skills. I tend to divert myself from a song quite easily, like my fingers want to do something they already know.
    Gonna try to learn at least some easy parts of this song, it really sounds beautiful.

    • @ChrisHayzelmusic
      @ChrisHayzelmusic  Год назад

      Haha thank you. In reality It took me about two and a half to three hours to get those three phrases. It really is a beast of a song. I think playing for as long as I have been helps, your brain learns to recognize certain patterns over time. You should definitely give it a shot! I’d love to know what your experience is with it.

    That’s nuts dude! Do you have any advice for ear training?

    • @ChrisHayzelmusic
      @ChrisHayzelmusic  Год назад +1

      Just keep doing it, keep trying to learn things by ear. There are great ear training exercises you can do, I bet you could find some on RUclips. But when it comes to applying it to your instrument, repetition is the name of the game, for me at least. Once you’ve played for long enough your brain will just start to recognize intervals and patterns 😁. Thanks for watching!

    I love this video! It is important what notes you’re fretting, but it might be interesting to learn what’s happening with your right hand. I know you only have so much time though

    • @ChrisHayzelmusic
      @ChrisHayzelmusic  Год назад

      That’s a good point. I suppose I don’t really think about it at this point, I sort of take my right hand for granted. The best way to think about it is to think of your thumb as the bass line finger, so any bass or root notes you hit with your thumb, then you sort of assign your first, second, and third fingers to the corresponding strings. Most finger picking songs tend to phrase themselves using three or four string phrases so you can just sort of adjust for what the phrase calls for. I’ll be sure to include some right hand stuff on the next guitar video :)

    It’s so crazy seeing you grasp the song in what seamed like such a short time and so effortlessly. How long did you actually practice for by the time you ended the video ?

    • @ChrisHayzelmusic
      @ChrisHayzelmusic  Год назад

      All in all I think I sat there for about two to three hours. It took me about an hour just to relearn once I realized I’d been playing it wrong. 😂

    Well that's a really funny but also interesting vidéo, as always, for the Suck at guitar series ^^ Personnaly i'm not a fan of playing songs for the most part, because i like to be original, BUT; if i learn a song, (actually i've started "Is anybody out there" today, because i love how weird it sound to me, pretty easy for the most part ^^) it'll be one that REALLY speaks to me, one that really make me feel something; because to me, playing songs just to play songs, it's like learning something like a robot and not enjoying the process of learning something. At least that's how a feel it ^^
    When i learn a song, i have to be really slow, not because of my fingers, but because of my slow brain XDDD
    By the way i finally have a new guitar ! It's a Cort SFX Myrtlewood NAT ! Love it; sounds pretty nice and it plays great, and the wood on mine looks AMAZING !! :)

      Writing original music is definitely my first love. But in the last 7 years or so I’ve really started enjoying learning other peoples’ music too. It’s a cool way to learn different approaches.
