    Hey there, friends! I've been pretty inspired by how generous you've all been with sharing your stories, your experiences, and your struggles with music in the comments. And it's been heartening to see the amount of support you've given not only to the message, but to each other. Reading through all of your comments I saw glimpses of a small, supportive, and encouraging community where we could all keep each other motivated and inspired, give and receive advice, or even just talk about the music that interests us. And Discord seemed like the perfect place to do that. So I would like to invite you to join my new Discord server, and come be a part of the community! Just follow the Discord link in the video description or on my channel page and come hop into the conversation!

    Your on a path that might send shockwaves through the youtube creator community... people are going to take your initiative and show their process eventually because authenticity is the key to interesting content.

    Such a refreshing idea. We’ve become a culture that is served anything we want/need (info, products, entertainment, etc) in such a rapid and effortless manner. We’ve lost touch to the fact that some things truly “take time”. And that (for me) is the most important aspect of what you’re doing. It’s documenting the investment of time. Keep at it!

      I'm just going off of personal anecdote here but there does seem to be some kind of neurological process that works in the background after you practice a new skill, motion, exercise etc. - your brain continues to learn (I think there are studies out there about this phenomenon but don't quote me on that - I haven't checked recently).
      I took part in a drum clinic workshop held by John Riley a few years ago where he talked about this exact thing. During the workshop I volunteered to go up to the kit and try a couple of his drum co-ordination exercises. The first time I tried them I struggled a bit, and had to play them quite slowly. Then he explained this learning concept - and elaborated with a story about one of his students. 10 or so minutes later, he got me to play the same exercises to test the concept in action - lo and behold, the exercises felt noticably easier to play; I was faster and more accurate.
      I've applied this process to other drumming concepts I've learned and it does seem to work - I'd imagine sleep may help over longer periods for the same reason.

  • @Snareric
    @Snareric Год назад +28

    Your editing skills is better than your drumming. All trolling aside I enjoyed this video. I think there are some areas of drumming that we learn faster or slower. You might learn slower when it comes to rudiments, but maybe your perception of odd time comes you a lot faster. There not being a specific format makes these videos feel way more natural and genuine so maybe its a good thing.

    • @ChrisHayzelmusic
      @ChrisHayzelmusic  Год назад +6

      Hahaha to address the trolling… I agree with you, my video editing is better than my drumming 😂. But I hope to balance the scales!
      It’s funny that you mention odd time signatures, for some reason that’s the area that my brain thrives in. Drums for me are like a coordination puzzle, but I want to get to a point where it doesn’t feel like a puzzle anymore :). Thank you for watching and thank you for one of the most enjoyable comments ever.

    Thanks for taking us backstage on your learning process. Your honesty is refreshing. I've been a professional classical musician for a long time, but I've recently picked up some new instruments -- bass guitar especially. Your video was a shot of inspiration today. It's humbling yet exciting to tackle something brand new when you've already got a handle on related skills.
    One thing I was reminded of while watching your vid is that learning is a neurological process. We talk about "muscle memory" all the time in music, but it's our nervous system that memorizes, not muscles. When we repeat a motor activity, we cue our brain and peripheral system to reinforce our neural connections. A lot (most?) of that process probably happens AFTER we practice, in the same way that you don't get stronger while you're at the gym, but during recovery.
    For me, part of my embracing the suck is remembering that if I put in thoughtful and consistent practice time, I literally get better in my sleep.

    • @ChrisHayzelmusic
      @ChrisHayzelmusic  Год назад +1

      You just put words to what has always been so engaging about it for me. I love how you can put the time in to practice it, then go to sleep, wake up and you’re better. It’s the magic of the brain creating and strengthening the neural pathways :).

    You kinda need to build strengh here. I would play those exercises. 16th notes, played RLLL first with ghosts, regular then accented notes. Followed by LLLR same deal with nuances. And then go back to 6stroke roll. Trying to stay relaxed and not force anything ( no strengh involved only height)

    Great series! I've been playing guitar for over 20 years live at church in many different genres. Playing at church is awesome, one reason is that it is a live performance in front of hundreds of people a few times a week. I'm pretty good at feeling fluid and natural while playing and very often flowing with changes with the band and on the fly. But boy do I suck at playing guitar like a lot of these RUclips guitarists that just seem to shred your face off and know a chord like you mentioned in your other video, C#minor add 9 diminished and don't forget the 7 fret pinky stretch to grab that juicy flat 5th. I know that they also fail and practice a lot before uploading that flawless take, but seeing it as you upload this series is so real and encouraging. I think it's time I break out my metronome.

    • @ChrisHayzelmusic
      @ChrisHayzelmusic  Год назад

      I totally get what you mean, I have a very similar experience, especially on guitar. One thing I try to keep in mind is that there are many different aspects to playing music, all of which are valuable. Shredding your face off in your bedroom by yourself is one thing that gives you one form of experience. Playing shows with other musicians and learning to flow with the music is another. Both are valid, both are valuable :). And if you feel well rounded in one and limited in another, you can always expand your boundaries to include more!

    when I've practiced violin pieces or fought videogame bosses, the first try is always the best, so I think taking lots of breaks is good, especially when you get to that point where you start to get worse instead of keep improving.
    Also, it's funny to see you laugh off mistakes; I know if I had company, (or a camera filming me) I would do the same, as like an ego defense mechanism, whereas alone I'd be either completely fine with mistakes, or seething.

    man this video really helps me out a lot. I started playing drums when I was 19-ish, but never took it seriously and quit pretty soon after.
    But that feeling of rythm and beats never really left me. I was always playing the beats on my thighs etc and I knew that this is something I would really love to do if I started again.
    I am 30 now, started again. Dont have an Edrum set like I used to, but I bought a practice pad andIm only practicingand learning rudiments
    Its monotonous at times, but, I STILL LOVE DOING IT.
    started with the double stroke roll which got way better after I learned from various youtube videos that speed doesnt come with forearms, it comes with rebound technique and finger dexterity.
    Im still not perfect at it (Think that there is no being perfect at rudiments at all, but you know what I mean) but im proud of my progression.
    Now Im doing Single strokes which are really really fucking hard to do. the most basic sticking pattern you could do, and I suck at it. But I still love doing it
    I hope I will never lose this feeling. That feeling of knowing that I am bad at this now, but that I WILL get better if I keep doing it. Nothing has given me the sense of resilience and perseverance like drums do. Most things I've done I have quit. Rudiments however Ive been practicing for over 6 months now and Im still going strong.
    So thank you for your video (and the other one, embrace the suck). When I started I also felt like musicians very naturally more gifted than I am, and to a certrain degree I still believe that is the case, But, I have practiced and learned so much that Ive been able to get a grasp of that "not sucking anymore" feeling and that feeling is addictive.

Just wanted to let you know, and obviously everyone is different, but the paradiddle-diddle (Rlrrll // Lrllrr - it's essentially an inversion of the 6 stroke) really helped me improve my 6 stroke roll. Hope that helps! As a drummer currently trying to improve my guitar/bass playing and thoroughly embracing the art of sucking - keep up the good work! 🙌

      @ChrisHayzelmusic  Год назад

      Haha thank you, I’m so glad you enjoyed it. And thanks for the advice :). I’m working on my doubles and my paradiddles, and definitely noticing a difference too, especially in that left hand. Also, there’s an exercise in that same lesson that does three 6 strokes, ends on a paraddidle, and then back to 6 leading with the opposite hand. I’ve been finding that really helpful too because I can just keep going, switching hands each cycle and practicing both hand leads.
      How long have you been playing drums? And congrats on working your guitar/bass skills too, it’s so much fun to expand the musical repertoire :).

    A piece of advice from my drum teacher to you: Get it clean slow before you start working on fast.
    It should feel smooth and controlled. If your brain is having trouble keeping up, you need to play it more at the slower tempo.
    And you’ll do yourself a lot of good if you play each one longer before you stop. Play like 16 or 20 measures to build up the endurance (physical and mental) and muscle memory.
    I don’t mean to be ragging on you, because I’m in the same boat with my rudiments. Actually currently working on 5 and 6 stroke rolls.
