@@robertdurst9089 He hummed in tune completely and has perfect pitch as perfect as it can be when dealing with humans. He is not listening to it against the music, thats what the mute button on each track is for, removing it from the song so you can hear other instruments better. He is more focused on getting the sound he wants out of that midi controller. He was multitasking by working on the music while also working out a melody. He also sings in a very similar style to Freddie Mercury since that who he was influenced by and that indirectly means they both are Opera singers. Isolated vocals of Muse and Queen you will hear the similarities, as a matter of fact their song "explorers' literally repeats a chord on the second line of each verse that is exactly the same melody and chord as "don't stop me now". So why is he humming? Its very common to work out a melody by humming and once you find that write words for that melodic flow. Its why the melody is defined by the singer and not the instruments like in classical. He just knew he wanted to start the song with "I" in which he says twice while humming and thats what indicates he was working out a melody. Its why he went way low and looked at Dom and Chris, he is signaling for approval, if they think it sounds good. So I highly doubt he had all the lyrics and melody there and you kind of know it because he went way low and you don't hear him go that low in the song. The only reason I know all of that and can observe them and know what they are doing is I record in a studio and write songs and then mix them. I literally do the same job and yeah thats how we work out a melody. If it had been how you said, it would have already had the vocals recorded, and they would be what is referred to as "guide vocals" for the rest of the band so they could record their parts when he wasn't there together. Just like the fact that he literally had the drums prerecorded tells you he is working out the melody because why wouldn't he be recording himself? Recording and listening back is how we become better singers. He wasn't recording so he wasn't using it in that manner. Hope that makes sense on why he was humming.
I’ve written some music to myself I believe couldve been bangers if other artists dropped them for me under their names. I gotta say, I think melodies can come to you in many ways. Could be by improvising some humming. Or by thinking and then repeating what you thought with your voice or an instrument.
LMFAO 5:15 the moment Matt confused himself with his penmanship. He literally looks confused on what that actually says. Jesus his handwriting lol, it was written broken up its why he can't remember what it means. The first words he wrote was "Guitar 2nd", then he knew he wouldn't remember why he wrote it and clarified it with "2 or 1 VS". So what it means is either the second or first verse the guitar comes in, it can be deduced because of the structure of the song "Explorers" where he chose to introduce more instruments into the song, they do that a lot, I also think the guitar he was thinking of was the bass. Clearly thats how he did the song so I am assuming he figured that out. But man was confused for a hot second. The reason he wrote the numbers backwards is he wanted to make sure the first idea was tried first, making it come in on the 2nd verse, he would have fell back on the first verse if it sounded better to him. Also the fact this man can hum off the cuff in tune is why he is such a great singer. Not everyone can hum a melody to the same standard they would sing the words. He is one of the best singers to learn from because of the amount of techniques and control he is using vocally, practicing him gives you the ability to also sing Queen and Meatloaf, both rock stars who sang like Opera singers. He sings like them so his vocals should be expected to be of the highest caliber since Opera singers are really the best singers.
SM58 is a very versatile dynamic mic. Directional, great for close micing of instruments. Like the SM57 is. Stops unwanted surround noises creeping in such as cymbals Tom's etc. Great for live vocals too to stop feedback. I depends of course what sound on the kit you are after. They often use matched pair condenser mics for the overhead recording of the kit. That gives a live spacious sizzly room vibe.. Its an art form recording just drums. 👍
I like how this band wears their influences on their sleeves. First Matt starts humming George Michael’s Faith, and then I scroll to 3:20 and there’s a U2 beat.

Really common when writing and the lyrics haven't been wrote or they have and title isn't decided to just puck any random name that everyone associates with the song so you know what the hell your talking about.. otherwise your in the studio just saying, the one that goes ba ba duh dum... or tatatatutum lol.. makes it easier. What's harder is when the name changes then your looking at a set list in a live situation and you've been calling it ballsack for the last 4 months but all of a sudden its called, love me tender or some shit and your like, what the fuck is that song lol.. oh aye that's, ballsack.... and a 1, 2, 3.... lol

It's crazy but cool how Matt can just start humming something as soon as he hears notes and it becomes a song. Fascinating.
The song was already written, he was just humming it to hear how it sounded against the instrumental
