      On the contrary, they were probably betting on it. It's still an MGMT song and so has its own unique qualities but, comparing to most of their other stuff, it's clear that this was designed to be some kind of pop hit, yknow, in the interest of getting some production money to go on and craft something like Congratulations.

    • @Slashycent
      @Slashycent 3 года назад +39

      That's quite funny since MGMT pretty much started to despise how obsessed people were with only Electric Feel, Kids and Time To Pretend, to a point where they made an active effort to not write any more pop singles and focused on more experimental and conceptual album experiences, essentially actively _estranging_ the masses from liking their stuff lol.
      I get what you mean though. I'm a musician too and of course it'd be a dream come true if some day many people would love my art. But as a huge MGMT-fan it's always funny how some of my biggest idols sort of been there, done that and went "yeah no that sucks".
      Then again without those mainstream successes they wouldn't be able to create as freely as they can now so I think it did work out at the end.

After the work was finished at 1:30p we used to blast this song so loud throughout the whole warehouse to the point where the whole team would come to our section and we'd be on the warehouse floor dancing and the big boss who ran the entire facility didn't care as long as the work was finished.

    All these comments about how these edgey hipsters were "trying to make a cheesy pop song"
    *No, they were not*
    Pop music in 2007 would have been an RnB collaboration with Beyonce, Fergie, Nelly Furtado, Akon or Rihanna. As for Rock-pop, "hey there Delilah" was the pop sound, the "Nickleback sound" was still around. Not this. Just go look up the top 40 of 2007. This soudn became "pop" a few years later with "capital cities" and the like following the format of retro electric with retro synth.
    What made this song a success was a tried and true format that at the time was a retro aesthetic that had yet to be milked to death yet. Now it may be formulaic, but back then it was kinda fresh (again).
    Their following albums, though not as popular, technically on a production level actually have very pop-generic, "Safe" engineered tracks.
    But I guess people like the retroactive fairy-tale of rebellious hipsters accidentally making a generic pop song to be ironic. I can smell the beard oil from the comments.
