Hello Brad. The rat 2 has been a grail of mine since i first saw one on RUclips. I was recently gifted an R2D2 by an awesome friend on RUclips and after drooling over it for years, I was not in the slightest dissapointed. It is everything i expected and more. To me it is the perfect single blade edc. Just tried mine and the point is well below the liners, no risk of getting cut on mine. All the best.
Owned 4 RAT 2s over the years, including 2 I bought recently after the sale of OKC to Blue Ridge. All of them came with blade perfectly centered and covered, except the first one which I got off of eBay (so I'm kind of "iffy" about if it's a true RAT 2 or perhaps may be a counterfeit - it's even got scales that I've never seen advertised anywhere else, so take that for what it's worth). The blade in that one is off-centered, but still covered and not a danger to cut myself accidentally like happened in the video. Really like the ergonomics of the knife, although I agree that the clip isn't particularly deep-carry, but I've moved the clip to different positions to try out different carry methods before finally settling on right-side (I'm a righty) tip up. Nice to have those options!
One of the first knives that got me down the knife rabbit hole was a Rat2! Gave one to my father in law for a xmas gift and he loves it! Great comparison!
All 3 are excellent choices. Any one of these for EDC and for a gift to someone new to the knife world. My personal preference is the R2D2 but the CJRB is a close second. Thanks for the comparison!
I’ve had all 3. Love the penguin in blue Jean micarta. That’s my favorite. Might have to get the s35 version. CRJB and rat have better detent. They fly open. CRJB in micarta is great might need the jade one too!😄
I've got 2/3 and a large RAT and broadly agree with your points. My RAT has Teflon washers AND phosphor bronze haha, not sure if it's different for some reason. The feldspar and the penguin both... spydie flick or reverse flick, whatever you want to call it, extremely well. I think if the RAT had a minor redesign it could once again sweep the field but we'll see whether Ontario are capable.
Good comparison video. I own the Rat 2 in 8cr and the Penguin with micarta scales and have ALMOST pulled the trigger on a Feldspar several times but something always jumped the line to get ahead of it. You could have made this threesome into a foursome by adding a Honey Badger (which I also own a couple of and really like) which would've fit right in.
Yeah, I do think I got a bum one. I heard nothing but good reports on the Penguin, so was surprised. I fiddled with it, but the detent was what it was. Not sure it would have changed my choice of the three, but maybe. Thanks for checking out the vid!
@@mildmannerededc Yeah im thinking about the getting the rat 2. I was actually opposed to thumbstuds for a long time because i didnt think they had the fidget factor that flippers have. That has changed significantly since getting the Penguin. Now im mostly looking for thumbstud knives. Its currently between the CJRB Ria and the Rat 2.
Funny, I was the same way with thumbstuds and now I really like them. The Rat 2 is a classic for good reason, though personally I think I prefer the Ria between the two. I love how it carries and I like the Sandvik steel or RPM9 better than D2 or AUS8. Not sure I'd call it super fidgety though.
Feldspar just wasn’t my jam....blade shape maybe🤷🏼♂️. The Penguin was very comfortable and I liked the blade but the detent was also my issue. I don’t currently have an R2, however I really liked the one I had. Its definitely a cool knife, I would pick that for my winner. I still recommend the R1 and R2...great knives! Thanks for putting this together man!
Which one is better for self defense rat2 or feldspar? I was going to go with the dozier but my hand would probably slip down the blade if I had to stab something. Which one has a better handle?
G10 with a carbon fiber laminate (sticker) on the top. The CF laminate is real CF, just a very thin veneer of it. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
Only thing I dislike about any of these is how the rat has cheap plastic scales.. I’d gladly pay an extra $5-7 to have Micarta or even just a basic bitch G10.. but plastic, uhg..

Very nice. One year later, in 2/23, the Penguin now has a mini in jigged ti, a Plus in Damascus with bearings. Best knife I’ve ever owned
Only 6 mins into the video and this is by far the best review I’ve ever seen
Ha! I hope the rest of the review lived up to the first 6mins. Thanks for the kind words and for watching.
I have a RAT1 in D2 and a Large Feldspar great knives.
Great video! First time watching, enjoyed it very much! Love these knives too they all seem great. Ordered the penguin last night can't wait!
Three I would love to have one day. I do love my rat 1. Great comparison 👍
Got mine for 25 in denim micarta. Love the wharnie.
I'm kinda surprised you had issues with the detent, mine was a bit strong out of the box but is very nice now.

It's a classic and for good reason! Appreciate you checking out the vid!
The QSP penguin is the best of the group.

Love my Feldspar (full) and plan on getting the small too. Really great all around knives.

Great comparative look. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching sir!
Was the Penguin sharp from the factory?

I think there might be a problem with your specific Penguin. I cannot get the detent to drop that easily. Nearly threw my shoulder out trying it.

@@mildmannerededc I good opening action is enough fidget for me. Will look it over a bit tho, will probably end up buying both at some point.
The detent in my Penguin is way too soft also. I probably should have returned it, but I still like it.
This or Ganzo 741 for value? (ignoring price difference.)

I have that exact feldspar, it cut me twice. The same way you're Rat 2 did to you..
My RAT2 blade is dead centered and the tip is fully covered.
Which one is better for self defense rat2 or feldspar? I was going to go with the dozier but my hand would probably slip down the blade if I had to stab something. Which one has a better handle?
I prefer the handle on the Feldspar, it's contoured scales are easier to get a full grip on... for me anyways. Hope that helps.
It this the second injury on camera?
Yes and thank you for noticing. 😏 Bahahahahaha you're a loyal viewer my friend!
Awesome video dude very informative
...I misspoke. I said I have a Rat in 8cr but I meant AUS8. Doh!!!🤦
Ha! I actually figured that's what you meant. My RAT1 is in AUS-8... works just fine.
IS the QSP real Carbon Fiber?

@@mildmannerededc thanks 🤗
its a sheepsfoot not a wharncliffe!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, it is, I guess I misspoke. Either way, straight cutting edge.
