This movie didn't rely on shock value. It wasn't graphic. The harvesting of flesh was implied, not shown. But the psychological struggles, the desperation, and the will to survive was intense. Well done.

Glad you mentioned the acting, it was really superb... You are obviously not aware that most of them had not acted before. The casting took 7 months, Bayona wanted the actors to resemble the most the actual characters. Also, he wanted them to speak Spanish as the actual persons, but not any Spanish, with with the same accent and manner of speaking as the true persons being depicted, in order to make it the most close to the truth as possible. Only Spanish speaking persons are aware of the accent, that is the kind of meticulous detail Bayona wanted. The actors are Uruguayan and Argentinean, who speak mostly the same and completely different to other Spanish speaking countries. One of them was a cattlehand before appearing in this movie. Others, like Numa, had studied acting but had only participated in amateur in the theater, had not seen a movie set in his life. That's what makes this film so wonderful. The actors spent some time with the actual survivors or the families of those that did not survive in order to learn how they "acted" when young, what they felt, etc. The cinematography is superb and Pedro Luque should have been nominated

That's remarkable. No I hadn't read into the behind the scenes much. They all did very well.

The actor who plays Tintin is a Uruguayan rugby player! I think he was the one who said he saw a casting call for actors who had played rugby and he thought why not try out.

This movie was filmed to correct its past version, Alive! (1993), which was depicted by most survivors as ''a Disneyworld movie'' in comparison to what really happened. If you are interested in knowing more about the story, reading Miracle in The Andes, by Nando Parrado (one of the guys who crosses the Andes on foot for 10 days in search for help) is a good start.

I'm glad you reviewed this movie, and you appreciated it for what it is. It is truly a masterpiece. J.A. Bayona tried for years and years to make it, but didn't get enough financial support because it was in Spanish, and he always wanted to film it with local (Uruguayan and Argentinian) actors, until finally Netflix did it. So, as an Uruguayan, all Netflix's past and future sins are forgiven 😄. I am still amazed how Bayona captured the message of brotherhood, sacrifice, love and hope that the survivors always wanted to tell, and mostly, that by the effort of all, including the ones that didn't make it, 16 came back. It is hard to watch because all what they went through, but nothing was added to just shock you, all depicted here was real.
You might like to know that the survivors went to have long and plentiful lives. Some married the girlfriends they had at the time. Nando Parrado had a show about cars and racing, and still travels the world as a motivational speaker. Roberto Canessa finished his career and specialized as a pediatric heart surgeon. The 16 combined have over 100+ children and grandchildren. 14 are still alive and well, and they reunited with the families of the deceased to meet the young actors of this movie. It is truly a story about hope. 💗

The worst of all, that it was all TRUE! The good thing is that after this accident all the implied have been having great lives overall. Canessa became a re known doctor. Others, also finished their careers after the accident, and Parrado didn’t finish university but he became an orator, and he gives speeches all over the world sharing his experiences. U can find more about the accident in the History Channel, there is a whole documentary.

Great review! I recommend you to watch interviews with the survivors, there are some in English. They're very interesting.

Some of the survivors had cameos throughout the movie for example in the airport scene when Nando Parrado his mom and sister arrived the person that opens the door for them is the real Nando Parrado in the restauran when Numa is talking to his friends table opposite to them is another survivor I don't remember the name at the hospital after they were rescued the doctor is the real Roberto Canessa the scene where Numa is talking to his dog was filmed in Numas childhood home when they get rescued the rescuer take a camera out and the show some footage that is the real footage take the day of the rescue

I just want to throw out that it is about the time of year that all the Oscar nominated shorts (animated and live action) and documentaries are available to the viewing public. Maybe not ideal for react videos because doesn't have large viewership but I can tell you from having watched these over the last few years - they are very worthwhile. I hope I get to see some react videos for these

No conoces a casi ningún actor porque la mayoría son novatos. No han hecho otros trabajos anteriores. Del mismo director, también bastante buena y también basada en hechos reales, tienes Lo Imposible, una de las primeras películas de Tom Holland.
