A vital information: If you unplug the shifter, it's ESSENTIAL to remove the key from the car before doing so. If you leave the key in and unplug the connectors, your car will be frozen until a dealer makes a reset to the security system. Key will be stuck to the key fob and car immobilized.
Good explanation. I had this problem on my MB SL 500 (R230) years ago and replaced the broken plastik arm. That time a clever mechanic has milled them from aluminum and sold them via ebay for arround $100. It has worked perfectly fine by DIY. At that time Mercedes was only able to replace the whole shifter.

Has Mercedes not changed the part with a updated one? My 2013 w212 e350- first very cold day... won’t go into gear won’t get out of park at all but starts fine no issues at all. Clean mint car. I’m thinking my issue is battery related not letting gear shift but I could be weonf

Excellent video showing how why with this more common problem. Mercedes engineers should hang their heads in shame. Of course this is the way the bosses want it, cheap, lite (fuel consumption) shit plastic. They even put plastic IN the engine- hot oil, anything plastic in such an environment will stuff up in time.
I think my lever broke on my e class same thing. I already change brake switch. But randomly when I try to shift the gears in my car using the gear shifter but it stopped working randomly
