- I haven't picked this game up since 2009, and decided to just go through it to celebrate SF64 3D being released in September (and actually being shown a bit at E3 this time). I did this in one shot, cold turkey. I got pretty bad in some levels, but somehow did alright in Sector Y, a level I was never great at.
I did no retries that didn't involve extra spawning enemies at checkpoint, oh except one silly thing at the end. I also didn't skip most of the cutscenes and stuff, because I hadn't seen them in forever and wanted to actually watch them for once.
Also, I didn't use any turbo controllers or any of that. You can fire quickly pretty easily by pressing the A button with a certain rhythm.

I always like to see others play the same game and see their outcome. My personal high score was 1570, no cheats just rapidly pressing the A button and taking out as many as I can. Even I can't top that.
soooo, I was playing starfox 64 today thinking I was a bad ass with my 1435 score and went on youtube to see who else hates the 2nd to last boss. then I find this video. so I busted out my notepad. Geeze, I had no idea 1/2 of that was possible. very entertaining too. playing with the song by shooting blasters. lol

Mario was great, but to me, Starfox 64 is the best N64 game for sure...possibly my favorite game on any system. The replay value is just unparalleled.

I didn't like Mario 64 all that much. Majora's Mask was the best N64 game in my opinion, but Starfox is a close second. It's the replayability factor, it really is.

As an 11 year old kid I used to play and replay this game when it first came out for hours upon hours honing my fast twitch flying/shooting/lock-on timing, analyzing the enemy ship flight paths for maximum group shots and trying to discover the most efficient route in order to get as many hits as possible. Back then there was barely an Internet and no way of comparing scores/strategies with others so despite my best effort, I never even discovered the trick of non-lock on blasts that net the extra +1's etc so I never hit scores too far above 2k. I'd like to think I would have been pretty competitive though considering how much time I dedicated to this very task accumulating hits. I still remember the first time I heard the "whaaaat?" I thought for sure it was a sorta Easter Egg or something. I really wish I had known the trick back then but oh well. Maybe someday I'll be able to spend countless hours going after a high score again. Great nostalgic video!

Props on the barrel roll before the two robots where the Laser and Bomb are...I usually don't need the laser at that point, but it's a killer show off move...bought this game day one, and never tried that...

I always though I was good in this game. I did 2018 playing in Corneria, Meteor, Katina, Setox X, Mcbeth, Setor 6 and Venon and then I saw this guy going to Setor Y and then I was like WTF... who can he does that in this planet? All my knowldge as you fall down today. Interisting video and it is so good to have youtube nowadays and see great players like this showing how they play.

I remember my father and I trading high scores back and forth when I was about 9-10 years old. He used to take the ME route since he was getting scores in the 300s in there while I was taking this route because I didn't want to miss out on Zoness. Also I sucked balls in Meteo.
I had the highest score before my cartridge erased itself, pretty sure we were both getting close to 2000. This brings back memories...

I remember massive resets on this game as a child when I was trying to get my name in Nintendo Power for high score. Had a 1.0 version of the cart with the score bug and was heartbroken the first time I broke 512 on Area 6 only to realize it took 256 points off my final score. Ended up in the magazine with a 2210 high score going the 'old' fast way: corneria, meteo, katina, x, macbeth, area 6, venom. With N64 switch xpac, I'm going to have to grind the hard route now and see if i can come close.

Hey Zallard, I'm not sure if you still care about Star Fox 64 score runs, but where do you get all of this information for getting high scores? I know you described some of it at the GDQ you attended, but it would be nice to have an in-depth guide somewhere. I searched but couldn't find anything on the internet that was in english.
Nice video, have to say. enjoyed area 6 the most however (but that is my fav level), could cap the total on the scorecounter almost every attempt, but then i was using the pal version which caps at 511 D:

Guess it's time to try expert, but im such a sissy when it comes to losing my wings.
That's why I hate doing the Katina level in Expert mode, because I can never get through that one without crashing into the fighters (good guys or bad guys) and losing my wings while trying to shoot as many bad guys as possible.
Win more points in expert, but are more hard, i have 1751 :)

If this is the N64 game, what version of the cartridge are you using? Have you ever played the Wii VC version? I've noticed some enemies on Wii VC in SX crash into each other where they don't on the N64 version, among other issues (orbiting charge shots being another, more prominent one).

This was the one game I was really good at. I'm sure the best way for a big score was through the asteroid field on the second level then through the warp gates as they appeared. It would then take you to an extra sub level, that allowed you to switch routes afterwards, choosing all the highest scoring levels along the way. It was about 20 years ago though. Not seen anybody go that way on any run-throughs I've seen though.
+Keith Samuels The path you're thinking about was CO-ME-KA-SX-MA-A6-VE, which is the 2nd best route for points. It used to be the best route, but ever since there were new tricks found in Aquas, the best route for a high score is the one taken in this video.
Yes I admit I only watched the first level and flicked the rest. I know the first level so well though I was surprised a few places you hit multiple times, and got multiple plus hit points in the same spot. Not seen that before and played that level thousands of times back in the day. Just goes to show, with great games there is always something new to learn.
