Doobie Brothers Toulouse Street

- I love this Doobie Brothers song although I was hard pressed to interpret the lyrics into video almost resulting in no video. Instead, I chose to use the Storyville era of New Orleans which flourished for 20 years between 1898 and 1917.
Patrick Simmons is undoubtedly my favorite song writer for the Doobies. His compositions were essentially deep album cuts or B-Sides to Johnston's (and later, Michael McDonald's) radio-friendly singles.
The movie, Pretty Baby starring Brooke Shields (Violet) was made which depicts the Storyville history and I included one "parlor" picture from the movie.
At the turn into the 20th century, the undisputed center of good times in the Big Easy was literally carved out of the New Orleans landscape by Alderman Sidney Story. Storyville - as it came to be known, was the citys experimental "red light " district for legalized prostitution.
Toulouse Street
Patrick Simmons
Im walkin in shadows, I cannot see
Faces, they smile when I fall or flee
Doors without windows all shuttered tight again I just might pass this way again
I just might pass this way again
I just might pass this way
I just might pass this way again
The night she is hot, Creole girls they sing
My heart, it is pounding, my ears they ring
The spell has been cast down in New Orleans again
I just might pass this way again
I just might pass this way again
I just might pass this way
I just might pass this way again
Locked in a room down in New Orleans
My blood is a flowin fast
Locked in a room down in New Orleans
My blood is a flowin fast
The night she is hot, Creole girls they sing
My heart, it is pounding, my ears they ring
The spell has been cast down in New Orleans
My blood is a flowin fast
Patrick Simmons and Tom Johnston were biker poets!
And they never disappointed. They always gave you music that never stopped ringing around in your head...and reminded you of that beautiful girl you always loved/ cool guy, etc. Masterful command of finger picking guitar too. Both of them. Descending and ascending scales with great 2 part harmonies...these were great sons of America before the whole idea of being American became disgustingly politicized. I miss their time....
The Doobie Brothers.... those were good times. They just don't write music like this anymore. Anybody getting sick of the garbage being shoved into our ears? It's great to see kids today playing our music on their CD players, IPODs, radios etc... And it blows their minds when we (old foggy's) sing right along with the song word for word. Thinking that they had found something new and original. . . . Doobies Bros. forever. Thanks for posting this video. :)
Would you believe I heard this 'ballad' for the first time during the movie "Bottle Shock" and fell for it instantly? The melody haunted me so much thtat I kept my eyes peeled when the credits were rolling to get the name...but alas... It was one of 12 songs (most of which I did not know) ! Well...I copied all the unfamiliar titles and popped them in RUclips's 'Search' box....and eventually found this gem with the unlikely name of "Tolouuse Street". Seek 'N Ye Shall Find! :)
This is the album that put the Doobie's on the map back in 72. I wish I could go back to those times...
This is probably my all time Doobie's song of theirs. The flute, the words, the haunting feel. Such a different side, shame they never made an acoustic LP of stuff like this, it would have been legendary.....
This is, without a doubt, the most beautiful, flowing song by the Doobies. And the sultry pictures of New Orleans (long before the flood) was a perfect tribute.
Played this tune on my guitar in an empty train station for hours. It lives on in me.
One of the albums that defined the summer of '72 for me. This album & Stampede are what made it so hard for me to accept Michael McDonald
I used to borrow this record a lot from my parents when I was a kid in the 80s, and they were nervous to let me borrow it because of the naked people inside, but they let me anyway because they thought I had to know some way or other. I thought it was naughty but acceptable. And I borrowed this record a lot. I played it more than they did.
Bought this single for the A side 'Listen to the music' but was blown away by the B side, gorgeous tune, oh for the days of the 45 rpm vinyl!
The entire LP is outstanding. Listened to it all of the summer of 73. *Sigh*
Women....the most kind, generous, loving, beautiful of God's creations. It's so sad the way they have been abused and tormented by men....and yet these women gave birth to these men. Women keep the human race alive with their caring and kindness. I was seriously burned as a New York City Fireman.....my nurses were women and their care and concern will always be with me , more than the doctors. One of the burn nurses was the wife of a fireman friend of mine who was killed on 9-11. God bless her
Beautiful song
reminder of a different time and place
thanks
This has been my favorite song since the first time I heard it 36 or so years ago. Thank you so much for posting this.
Nice clip! Agree on Pat Simmons. My favorite Doobie from the beginning. Incredible musician and what a career! And still rockin!
Haven't heard this song in years and it brings back some great memories. I like the video.
Pat Simmons is probably one of the most under rated musicians What a great artist This song is so excellent
Doobies LIttle Feat and Los Lobos Great bands

You rose to the challenge magnificently. I was blown away. :-)
What’s the one after dminor(that’s the very 1st note
SacredMojo, excellent job, I feel lucky I ran across it. I was just looking for "I cheat the hangman" and found this. I had almost forgotten this song, and my wife and I just returned from a trip to New Orleans, where we stayed at the Maison du Puy...on Toulouse street. Glad I saw this. Thanks for the post
This song is so awesome...so beautiful.
Definitely one of my favorite Doobie's songs ever!!!
The Doobies Rock!!! Always have and always will!!!
What a fantastic, gorgeous, haunting song. Stunning.
I always like this tune as well. I spent five months in New Orleans. I got to know and understand the place. Rather unique town, as so many cities are all the same in so many ways. Sad that it's now analogous to disaster and tragedy. Interesting interpretation.
I heard this song for the first time on "Acoustic Storm" this morning. I was struck by how much it resembles the Moody Blues' "Are You Sitting Comfortably?". Very atypical Doobie Brothers song.
I saw in the early 70's at the Filmore West on dollar night. Playing basketball on the basketball stage floor and drinking apple juice. Please do not drink from strangers.
Me, too - - love it - but had never heard it until the movie 'Bottle Shock'...
I have to agree. That's why I got out of the radio susiness. This is some of the best music EVER PUT ON VINYL.
This, and "I Cheat the Hangman" are my favorite Doobie Brothers songs.
You beautifully captured the nostalgia & eroticism of that era. Great work!
My two favorites of theirs too, and that's saying something!
what a classic ! beautiful
Wow I grew up with this song!!!, it was on the back of the single listen to the musci my mom bought me when we were coming from school, and I felt in love with this song!!!, thank you so much for sharing.Silvia hugs from Argentina
Despite the fact that this song never got any airtime I have to say that it is my favorite Doobie Brothers song of all. Hurray for Patrick Simmons!
Hey SacredMojo...
Very poetic the way you put the video to this song. It really works.
Love those old-time pictures and how they and the music set the mood.
It's really something.
Nice job.
SacredMojo...You've taken a masterpiece and enhanced it further still. Brilliant!
Great song. I just discovered this song for the first time tonight. Amazing.
I listened to it on my record player when it first came out, just like the Beatles White Album. I thought both were good. I am so glad you liked it, steev11.
My last Christmas in the French Quarter was a poor one for a big change but like always she made the best of the situation!
'Father, could you help an old altar boy?' ha!
Been SOOOOO long!
I second what Larrymh07 - now I'm going to go buy this...been ages since I heard this song - and the video you made for it game me goose bumps. Excellent job!
Wow, great video! I haven't heard this song since the early 70's and it was eerie back then; you have both magnified and refined that sensation.
This is also MY favorite song by the Doobie Brothers!
What a beautifully crafted video! This went missing for a little while and I am SO glad to see it back!...A labour of love.
one of my favorite pieces of music ever. thank you.
The mysteries of life passing us by and by, and only the fools and the blind, see not the miracles. On and on, forever, eternally
omg....i had so forgotten this beautiful song, and the excellent bonus of the vid was a wonderful addition.
Great band and one of my favorite cities in the US. The images that you chose was perfect! I have to ditto Cj's comments...clever,unique and factual.
Great job!
This video has fine, nostalgic imagery of Victorian Era New Orleans.
This has to be my favorite song by the Doobie Brothers. Its style is a lot different from the group's singing style of the 1970s. In fact, I never would have recognized it as being a Doobie Brothers song if I had not been informed of that fact. The very first time I had heard this song was in the overhead music system at a Walgreen's drug store (the song is played every so often).
Very good video Sacred Mojo.
Such a wonderful video; it is so beautiful and matches the song so perfectly!
I'm so glad I found this again!
An awesome interpretation, Donna...I love coming here for a visit...
This is an extremely beautiful portrayal of the Doobie Brothers Classic "Toulouse STreeT..Donna, awesome insight and editing...you know I am loving this..especially since I spent my afternoon in Flickr and 3datadesigns looking at vintage photos...Sis! Once again, I am in awe of our spiritual connection..I LoVe ThiS..is one beautiful video♥
great video, also love this group. I really enjoy seeing old pictures of that era.
SacredMojo
-You did a terrific job with the images.
In fact, if they had done music videos at the time,
this one would have represented the song nicely.
Interesting video....well made. Very interesting subject material - the brothels, madames, and prostitutes of old New Orleans. Very relevant to the song.
This is really well done.
Awesome song!!! I was thrilled to find this on RUclips.
Good video here.
Love this song too Donna, really love Patrick's "South City Midnight Lady" also. Great video.
I might pass this way again! ;-) Great video ***** love it!
Thanks for sharing this with us! magical images...
I've always loved them and I always will.
I love Pat Simmons' voice...soooo sweet.
Toulouse Street is a beautiful work of art.
Check out the RUclips videos of the Doobies' live performances. They are awesome!!!
I had a boyfriend from the 1970's who was a roadie with the Doobies and he died of an overdose while on the road. When I hear this song, I think of him. Always loved this song...even more in 2020
Beautifully done.
Wow, a buddy of mine just sent this to me under the heading "dooby bors.. like jose gonzales"
how apt.. it's a cool song I hadn't heard from the Doobie Brothers before, and it really sounds Jose Gonzales-ish.. I think its fair to say, at least the way I mean it, it's a compliment to both. Cool vid too, well done to the visual creator.. truly, well done.
Anyway, a good way to doze away three minutes and 14 seconds.. well, and a few more to write this. cheers -pm
I wish we could all get along and put aside this crazy Madness that we're going through right now. And that our issues and other problems are not left or right. And that we need to find some common ground and get along. We should not have to go to Polar extremes.
Just finished reading Empire of Sin (Gary Krist) about the Storyville era of Nola. For some reason, thought of this song and then found this when I looked for it. Coincidence? I think not.
Lovely song and vid.... thanks for posting SacredMojo.
I just might pass this way again...
A lot of groups from the late 60's and early 70's sounded almost identical at times. The style of this song Toulouse Street has some Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young style to it some early Genesis flute work from Trespass (1970). Some of America's Music "Horse with no name" is here to. The styles all sound very similair
Love this song and I can mostly play it now. The chords are easy (Dm, Dm/C, G7/B, C, Eb, D) but the overdubbed strum pattern is hard to pull of gracefully and the original is almost exactly 1/4 step above 440 tuning.
soundz technical ...?
They sound alittle like Crosby, Stills and Nash here, don't they like in Genevievere? That is from So Far, 1974
Yes. I thought CSNY the first time I heard this song as well. I don't understand how anyone can not like this.
I too thought it CSNY first time I heard it
Also recorded at Wally Heider's.
God's most beautiful creature, women.......treated so badly by men. How can the creator allow this ? I wouldn't
Anything before Micheal McDonald is the REAL Doobie bros. He changed a really classic sound and gave the band a commercial appeal, sadly to say. Pat Simmons is the tops.
It sounds a lot like a CSNY song...but it is a beautiful song does not sound like Doobies either before or after MM. It stands on its own all the credit to Pat Simmons
help. i'm locked in a room down in new orleans.
I LOVE THIS SONG!!!
I grew up listening to The Doobie Brothers and absolutely LOVE their music.
They were and still are awesome!!!
Thanks for putting this on RUclips.
@lateforthesky61 I agre with your comment, esp. the part about America becoming disgustingly politicized. But it's the same lines that were drawn back then, just given different names now,and the politicans have capitalized on it. Can't we just live in peace?
I'm locked in a room down in New Orleans....
SacredMojo, are you okay? You haven't been here in a few years now. Hope it's because your life is full and good.
Excellent music. Dave Shogren should have stuck with the Doobies instead of leaving the group.
love simmons songwriting,so non doobies
endofmessage
And what about Toulouse's streets ?
ruclips.net/video/ct8O5b9PEys/видео.html
I listen to this song and wish, in my heart of hearts, the 2016 election would be FOR THE PEOPLE...not the Republican or Democrat reps....WHY NOT VOTE FOR INDEPENDENT???? the independents have great issues that can CAN be fixed....why can't we JUST ONCE, just once...vote for the 3rd?
The flute part of this song is characteristic of Genesis Trespass (1970).
Are there two guitars playing on this or just one?
+richintalent two
You have 2 🎸🎸both in slightly different tunings and capod at different frets
Dave Shogren, the original bassist, played guitars for this song right before leaving the group.
Back before Michael "Let's make all the Doobie Brothers' songs sound the same" McDonald ruined it for everyone with yawn-fests like 'What A Fool Believes'.
this tune is utterly captivating
In the film clip, the lady dancing is Isadora Duncan. Film is by Eadweard Muybridge.
It’s haunting, especially with the video.🌬
This is so un-Doobie Brothers.
That's what makes it such a great Doobie Brothers song.
This remains one of my favorite productions on RUclips...and, will always hold the Doobies close at heart...PEACE♥
Such an elegant visual interpretation of this beautifully haunting treasure.
Thank you for this, truly.
Most beautiful song
I love this song too. Deep emotions! Your video is fitting perfectly! Just GREAT!
Thank you very much!
I'm laid off and on a tight budget, but now I'm going to have to go out and buy the "Toulouse Street" CD. Now look what you did!
Seriously, thanks for posting this. You did a superb job on the video.
PARA MI LA MEJOR CANCION DE LOS DOOBIE , LA MAS ESTETICA, LA MAS INSPIRADA , SU FORMA ES PERFECTA PARECE MUSICA CLASICA.
never knew what this was about, now I wish I didnt understand so well what it is about, and I grew up in new orleans too. what a band.
Thank you , thank you, thank you for such a beautiful video!!!!! Love the Belloqc prints!
Great job, for a great song!
Thanks for sharing my friend!
River...
Locked in a room down in New Orleans
My blood is a flowin’ fast
I love this video- what was the backstory to those women dancing- are they ghosts?
The Doobies stand in the great temple of music, along side with the immortals. They came from a time where music was meant as an outlet for true artisitc expression. They made everything sound great from from blue grass to rock to R&B. The Doobies were one of the most talented bands ever came out of the US. And that's an understatement.
and 8 yrs after your post they still have not been up for the rock and roll hall of fame....doesnt make sense....
beautifull !!!.....i like every minute (-: thanx
@kelseyleannemusic Haunting and hypnotic.
Pat Fitzsimmon's masterpiece
INCREDIBLE SONG......INCREDIBLE VIDEO!!
