Doobie Brothers Toulouse Street

  • I love this Doobie Brothers song although I was hard pressed to interpret the lyrics into video almost resulting in no video. Instead, I chose to use the Storyville era of New Orleans which flourished for 20 years between 1898 and 1917.
Patrick Simmons is undoubtedly my favorite song writer for the Doobies. His compositions were essentially deep album cuts or B-Sides to Johnston's (and later, Michael McDonald's) radio-friendly singles.
The movie, Pretty Baby starring Brooke Shields (Violet) was made which depicts the Storyville history and I included one "parlor" picture from the movie.
At the turn into the 20th century, the undisputed center of good times in the Big Easy was literally carved out of the New Orleans landscape by Alderman Sidney Story. Storyville - as it came to be known, was the citys experimental "red light " district for legalized prostitution.
    Toulouse Street
    Patrick Simmons
Im walkin in shadows, I cannot see
Faces, they smile when I fall or flee
Doors without windows all shuttered tight again I just might pass this way again
I just might pass this way again
I just might pass this way
I just might pass this way again
The night she is hot, Creole girls they sing
My heart, it is pounding, my ears they ring
The spell has been cast down in New Orleans again
I just might pass this way again
I just might pass this way again
I just might pass this way
I just might pass this way again
Locked in a room down in New Orleans
My blood is a flowin fast
Locked in a room down in New Orleans
My blood is a flowin fast
The night she is hot, Creole girls they sing
My heart, it is pounding, my ears they ring
The spell has been cast down in New Orleans
My blood is a flowin fast

Patrick Simmons and Tom Johnston were biker poets!
And they never disappointed. They always gave you music that never stopped ringing around in your head...and reminded you of that beautiful girl you always loved/ cool guy, etc. Masterful command of finger picking guitar too. Both of them. Descending and ascending scales with great 2 part harmonies...these were great sons of America before the whole idea of being American became disgustingly politicized. I miss their time....

The Doobie Brothers.... those were good times. They just don't write music like this anymore. Anybody getting sick of the garbage being shoved into our ears? It's great to see kids today playing our music on their CD players, IPODs, radios etc... And it blows their minds when we (old foggy's) sing right along with the song word for word. Thinking that they had found something new and original. . . . Doobies Bros. forever. Thanks for posting this video. :)

Would you believe I heard this 'ballad' for the first time during the movie "Bottle Shock" and fell for it instantly? The melody haunted me so much thtat I kept my eyes peeled when the credits were rolling to get the name...but alas... It was one of 12 songs (most of which I did not know) ! Well...I copied all the unfamiliar titles and popped them in RUclips's 'Search' box....and eventually found this gem with the unlikely name of "Tolouuse Street". Seek 'N Ye Shall Find! :)

This is probably my all time Doobie's song of theirs. The flute, the words, the haunting feel. Such a different side, shame they never made an acoustic LP of stuff like this, it would have been legendary.....

This is, without a doubt, the most beautiful, flowing song by the Doobies. And the sultry pictures of New Orleans (long before the flood) was a perfect tribute.

I used to borrow this record a lot from my parents when I was a kid in the 80s, and they were nervous to let me borrow it because of the naked people inside, but they let me anyway because they thought I had to know some way or other. I thought it was naughty but acceptable. And I borrowed this record a lot. I played it more than they did.

Women....the most kind, generous, loving, beautiful of God's creations. It's so sad the way they have been abused and tormented by men....and yet these women gave birth to these men. Women keep the human race alive with their caring and kindness. I was seriously burned as a New York City Fireman.....my nurses were women and their care and concern will always be with me , more than the doctors. One of the burn nurses was the wife of a fireman friend of mine who was killed on 9-11. God bless her

This video has fine, nostalgic imagery of Victorian Era New Orleans.
This has to be my favorite song by the Doobie Brothers. Its style is a lot different from the group's singing style of the 1970s. In fact, I never would have recognized it as being a Doobie Brothers song if I had not been informed of that fact. The very first time I had heard this song was in the overhead music system at a Walgreen's drug store (the song is played every so often).

A lot of groups from the late 60's and early 70's sounded almost identical at times. The style of this song Toulouse Street has some Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young style to it some early Genesis flute work from Trespass (1970). Some of America's Music "Horse with no name" is here to. The styles all sound very similair

Love this song and I can mostly play it now. The chords are easy (Dm, Dm/C, G7/B, C, Eb, D) but the overdubbed strum pattern is hard to pull of gracefully and the original is almost exactly 1/4 step above 440 tuning.

The Doobies stand in the great temple of music, along side with the immortals. They came from a time where music was meant as an outlet for true artisitc expression. They made everything sound great from from blue grass to rock to R&B. The Doobies were one of the most talented bands ever came out of the US. And that's an understatement.
