    Hey Sunshiners! *So I'm curious to know your thoughts about potentially changing up these types of videos* where I instead either create the aesthetic’s outfits with clothes I already own (which already are thrifted) or I go to the thrift store and thrift the pieces myself based on what I know about the aesthetic/style (if I don’t have certain pieces) and I can still do a little deep dive like I’ve been doing in the beginning of the video. With thrifted mystery boxes you can’t be picky and I just feel like after this one it would have been 1) a better outcome of pieces that I probably would have liked more and 2) more fun because I then could have made better outfits. I could also do one with multiple aesthetics in one video, similar to how Katie from StealTheSpotlight did in her most recent video ruclips.net/video/joC-DDT9Ik4/видео.html , or I can keep doing them like this or only buy one if I think it’s worth it based on price and number of items . Truly just want to know your thoughts on what you’d prefer!

    You don't have to keep apologizing for being disappointed! For $54, I'd be disappointed too considering the pieces weren't all that grunge. It's not like you're hating on the seller and if anyone thinks that, it's on them

  • @readandre-read
    @readandre-read 2 года назад +272

    I actually liked those pieces. The price, not so much. I get that it's probably a reasonable price for the seller's time and expense, just not what I'd want to pay for items that aren't hard to thrift for.

    As a grunge era person-this wasn’t grunge. It kinda seemed like “grunge light” which was probably what happened the further we got away from the height of the scene. Also think this was WAY overpriced! I’d love to see you take your research and thrift items yourself! I think it would save you money and be more on point! Love your hair!!

      @@masxe I don’t see it as gate-keeping at all. Alexa was trying to flow with a certain style she researched and said she felt it missed the mark, simply explaining why she felt that. No one is trying to discourage her from doing so.

      100% agree. I think these items can definitely be styled to look grunge but being inside a $54 grunge mystery box when they could be thrifted for like $15 makes the box disappointing.

    I feel like almost anyone who knows nothing about fashion could’ve curated a better grunge box. BUT I will always click on a mystery box video lol this wasn’t a bad video just a bad box.

  • @JennyWas13
    @JennyWas13 2 года назад +75

    I think we all need to stop tiptoeing around the creators of this box. For the price, this box was a huge rip off. The “curators time” argument doesn’t even hold as all of these items you could find within 5mins of stepping into your local thrift shop

  • @siduri9522
    @siduri9522 2 года назад +118

    Lol, grunge was amazing and it is so easy to do once you get the layering. I think the thing missing from Soft Grunge is the layering isn’t quite right. So this box - Layer the sweater over the button up. Wear half tucked in with cutoff jean shorts over fishnet tights with platform boots. That’s essentially the grunge uniform. And don’t be afraid to cut it to make it work. And if you mess up cutting it, well it could still work accidentally and look good. We cut a lot of sleeves/ collars off shirts for the layering technique, the shorts and pants were always frayed with scissors, tights intentionally had holes,
    Especially fishnets. Don’t be afraid to cut things. Oversized sweaters were also worn as dresses. I never really bothered with shorts, I preferred babydoll dresses over tight striped long shirts. Sometimes we’d layer babydolls over jeans - really baggy ones, and the most beat up boots we could find. Also, Courtney Love when she was in Hole was goals for grunge girls (which I was one). I can’t tell you how much we wore lingerie as outerwear over cropped tight tees and striped tight long sleeve tees. So really oversized sweaters over slip dresses, tight striped shorts with battered band tees and shorts/fishnets.
    The box items were underwhelming, but the colors were mostly ok. Just a little too mumsy (but there was also a house dress esthetic to grunge that no one but the Scandinavians and Japanese ever repeat - seriously, Lagenlook layering and oversized Japanese street style have a lot of grungy potential. The layering isn’t quite right, of course, but you can take elements of that. Grunge was a lot of layering of tight things and loose things, including dresses over dresses over tutus. And tights over tights with hot pant style tights and loose tops exposing silky bras and camisoles. Docs and Sketcher platform boots were staples with everything.
    Great video though. It’s always interesting to see the styles you loved when you are younger being repeated by younger peeps. Kind of nice, really. ❤️

    The graphic shirt brand isnt called LARGE its L-R-G. Its an acronym for Limited Research Group. Whoever curated that box for you ripped you off because LRG isn’t even grunge or even close to being grunge. Its a street wear brand that was huge in the early 00’s, like Sean John, Akadmiks, Ecko. I feel like t shirt wise its so easy to find a grunge aesthetic top, honestly they could’ve just picked up a Nirvana band tee from target or something. I forgot to say I love your fruit camp shirt and also the short hair cut looks so good.

    I like the fact that even when you aren't 100 percent thrilled with something you still try to find the positives instead of ripping it apart. I remember buying my first pair of Doc Martens in the mid 90s and my parents flipping out b/c of the price. I wore the s#*t out of those shoes!

    The concept of a curated grunge box sort of cracks me up. As I recall (I was in high school), the whole point was that you didn't really have to try. You threw on your only pair of jeans, your only pair of Chucks, a concert t-shirt, and a flannel shirt you thrifted or stole from your dad, and you were all set. And you wore that every day. Forever. Grunge style is prime for thrifting--that's what my friends and I all did for our clothes back then, anyway--so it seems like it would make more sense to thrift some grunge pieces.

    90s grunge. Super simple. Band tee, oversized plaid flannel shirt, trench coat, pegged baggy jeans, clunky shoes or Vans. Layering was key. And yes. It was about the music, not the clothes for the most part.

    I love your idea of focusing more on building new aesthetics from the clothes you already have in future videos. Thrift hauls are tons of fun (I just did one myself), but I'd love to see you put together your own dream versions of these looks since mystery boxes can be so hit or miss. Also, I adore the history portions of the videos where you explain the aesthetics. I can't wait to see your next one!

    I am LIVING for the power move that is starting a grunge-themed video wearing clothes with brightly-colored fruit patterns. *chef kiss* And regarding your pinned comment - I think both ideas you had would be fun (and I would/will happily watch both), but I’ll admit to being a little more partial to the “shop your closet” approach! I always love seeing how creative people can get with it, and I think it can represent a more accessible way to try out an aesthetic (easier to test out whether you like it when you don’t have to spend money, etc).

  • @alliewithbooks
    @alliewithbooks 2 года назад +2

    I loved this video so much and your history on grunge! I do think it’s hilarious when aesthetics/styles describe themselves as “not caring” because it always reminds me of that scene in The Devil Wears Prada when Andy calls the options for the photoshoot “stuff” and Miranda explains that while Andy might think she’s made a statement about “not caring” about fashion she’s still being influenced by it whether she’s cognisant of it or not. I think that definitely applies to styles like grunge.

    • @alliewithbooks
      @alliewithbooks 2 года назад +1

      Also it proves just how much people actually do care when it comes to grunge when they’re like “that’s not grunge”. Because if they didn’t care they wouldn’t bother to try to define it so rigidly.

    From someone who was there & loved grunge, I can tell you that a belt like that was EVERYTHING. Prob the best piece you got. Ok my favorite part is the history review. So much of my childhood! As a 1985 baby, I grew up listening to all of this before the age of 10, had an extensive collection of band tees and flannels, and so much of it has stuck with me through adulthood. I love that you are trying so many new things! While this box didn’t nail the era, it was fun to see. Try the button-up over the sweater with some ripped jeans or shorts/tights and Docs or Vans. 🖤

    A few things
    1- I love when you go into the history of fashion in your videos. You have a good voice, speaking mannerisms, and visuals to deliver history in a way that’s super informative, yet still captivating throughout. After watching several of these videos I think it’s cool to see how much music influences fashion!
    2- the last outfit is definitely my fav, though it was kind of funny seeing you in these all black and gray outfits with such a color background 😆
    3 - maybe you could thrift flip that button up shirt? Like cut up swatches of it and glue them onto some jeans to make them kind of funky? I don’t know if that makes sense but if you won’t wear it now there’s nothing to loose by trying toy thrift flip it
    Hope you have a wonderful day Alexa ❤️ ☀️

    Sometimes for belts like that you can pull the top metal part, it unclips and twists, you can turn it around and clip it down back in place and it flips the belt. That does look like a belt that is reversible so it may work, but since I'm not there I don't know 100%. You can definitely try it though because you have to use the belt to the full potential if you can 👍🏻😁

    While I thought the pieces were fine and possibly even stuff I would pickup myself while thrifting, the price point was super high for what you got. Just stumbled on this video this morning and my thoughts are the pieces were more on the Tumblr soft grunge side. I was a kid thru the original grunge period and I think what you were expecting would have been more on point with 90s grunge (more oversized and actual flannel etc). That said LOVE the info you gave on the history of the aesthetic and the importance of the music, which ultimately, was the entire point back in the day. I'm gonna have to follow you now 🤣🤘

    I like the sweater. The tee had a unique design. The cost was expensive for 3 items

    I love the short hair! I have a pixie, and I always agonize over growing it out or keeping it as is. While I'd love to be able to style my hair the way I did when it was your length, I feel my current haircut fits me and my needs! Also, I love the intro at the beginning about grunge, sounds like Safiya's videos about fashion decades (in the way that it is well researched and informative). Grunge is thoughtless, fashion ignorant and uncoordinated? Am I grunge?

    Try pull and twisting the belt buckle, Walmart used to sell reversible belts like that.

    I like the grey stripe sweater - but in socal? I thought the seller missed grunge in that it was made to look like it had been worn everyday for the past year; faded and frayed. The shirt, tee and belt were too new. Just imo. The theme boxes are fun.

    I think that second outfit was closer to tea grunge, but you did good trying to style what you were given. I agree with another commenter about you doing your own thrift trip for grunge based on what you learned.

    I wonder if the buckle will twist on the belt. Some reversible belts do that. I love your hair and that shirt you had on in the intro!

    Does the buckle part of the belt turn? My husband has a belt that's reversible, you pull the buckle a bit and then you can twist so it works for the side of the belt?!? Grunge is def one of the better trends that's coming back. X

    I don't think it was a completely terrible box but it definitely seemed like the person who made it had more of a surface-level understanding of grunge style. I would definitely be interested in seeing a follow-up where you try to thrift grunge pieces!

    I vote for thrifting these outfits or building them from your closet. $54 is a lot for some items that would have cost you a total of $10 at the thrift store. Please don't break the bank for these vids! Maybe you could also interview people who actively wear those styles or who are experts on the style to help guide your thrifting of the items.
