Hi Apollo, as a reenactor of this time period I think you would really enjoy it, as you learn drill and fight in battles with cannons and black powder!
About marshal Ney's death : during his trial, the judge offered him a life in exile instead of a punishment by death, which he declined in these words "Je suis français et je mourrais français !". "I am french and I shall die french !" Murat was king of Naples. When the Emperor returned, Murat declared war on Austria, but was quickly crushed. He was found guilty of treason by the allies. He commanded himself the firing squad that executed him, by the sentence "Soldats ! Sauvez le visage, visez au cœur !" "Soldiers ! Save the face, aim for the heart !" So yeah. Chad men everywhere.
Around 4:30 I feel the same, but for naval warfare. I’ve been real interested and learning about the 1800s naval combat from the wooden hauls of old, to the age of ironclads. Specifically around 1840-1875, when steam paddle warships where a thing before full screws and after full sails.
"I can't imagine being surrounded by such Chad men" -Apollo "Not only were they big brain, they were also big..." -Apollo out of context Sounds like you're becoming like Friedrich
Marshal Ney denied a blindfold, looked at the firing squad and said “soldiers, when I give the command to fire, fire straight attack my heart. Wait for the order. It will be my last to you. I protest this condemnation. I have fought hundred battles for France, and not one against her…… Soldiers, FIRE!” Ney was allowed and did give the orders for his own firing squad. His lawyer tried to save him by saying Ney was now a Prussian and can’t be held in French courts. “I am French and will remain French” Ney really was the Bravest of the Brave
I can imagine *why* this time period fascinates you like it does. It's the time of patriotism and flair, where uniforms were meant to look striking and impressive, to instill pride in the men that wore them and fear into one's enemies (what with morale being so important in battle). And warfare worked as close to a game of chess as warfare ever has, everything is big, loud and explosive, and it was upon the traditions of the Napoleonic era that so many military traditions were founded that are still upheld today, if only in name and not function.
I'm reading "War and peace" right now, (enjoying it, so far) and seeing battles from this time period, either from Napoleon TW, or this mod, would be awesome. It makes me even more immersed in that time period.
@@D00Rb3LL All of Napoleon's battles during Russian campaign were brilliant. He won every single one of them, though he wasn't victorious. He lost a war, without losing a single battle. From what you mentioned at 20:00 it sounds a bit like Commander Battle from Mount&Blade's Napoleonic Wars. Its literally a game mode where everybody is an officer that controls a single unit of bots.
Funny you should say that - I've grown a straight up Napoleonic moustache recently. It's a long story as to why. It was only supposed to be temporary but it looks great, my woman loves it (I'm told it tickles in the right places) and people have this weird reaction to it where they instinctively treat you like someone important. I would absolutely, 100% recommend trying it out.
at 25:03 I'm reminded of a story from Napoleon's Russian campaign where the French lines were so close to the Russians that some of the Russian cavalry shouted, in passable French, "cry 'Vive L'empereur' for the last time because we're coming for you" and honestly if I was in that French line I would be terrified
Walls do provide some cover. It's not really a bonus but it acts like trees and a couple bullets will hit the wall/tree instead of a soldier. At least, that's what I found out.
Just a heads up If your British like me and love our lads in this time period redcoat history channel is a awesome channel to learn about of all our campaigns during this era
Hey Apollo! I loved your videos since 2017, as you may have know that In August 28, the Napoleonic community aka Waterloo roblox is gonna do the *Sixth Great Battle of Wagram* after 5 great battles against the coalition and the french suffered defeat and also *decisive* victories when you were away. We hope to see you there and make our community bigger what you did 6 months ago. Vive la france! -Troisieme Corps Edit: Its good to have you back on our community ;)
Ney bravest of the Brave, he had five horses shot from underneath him at Waterloo, and was one of the last Soldier's to leave Russia after the 1812 campaign, he had fought on foot for hundreds of miles, with the French rearguard. Old Guard qualification, was a minimum of two major campaigns.
Marshal Ney was one of the biggest chads of the Napoleonic wars he standing up front encouraging his core to stand their ground hell at Waterloo he went up front of a Calvary formation to attack Wellington mistaking it for a full on retreat and lead the old guard forward in a last ditch effort to break Wellingtons forces and yes he was executed by firing squad but when his lawyer tried to say he was now Prussian Ney yelled out saying in a more simple term “I am French!” And wouldn’t wear something to cover his eyes and said his final words before being fired apon he even gave the order to shoot himself
Idk if it's just me, but I love mustaches. Love the Joshua Chamberlain look. Not so sure about that didburn hook into a mustache look his brother had, but...
thin lines is better than thick squares. The squares give a bonus charge for bayonet charges. The morale is negligible as it's completely balanced off with reduce firepower compared to a 4 thick formation. Basically it provides a melee advantage while the thin lines provide a shooting advantage.
WOW! What a back and forth battle. Pyrrhic victory for the French there and a tough loss for the Prussians… how do you envelop the enemy and still lose?
I was playing the Italian campaign and I got to a city with a huge army, so I took some Militia and a small amount of cannons to go from the side and lead the huge army out, the huge army left the city I I took my main force and captured the city and only faced abunch of armed citizens
For aditional realism id love some things to be in a NTW II - some adjustments to the moral (for example differnt states resulting from shell shock, or units beeing struggeling to march forward beeing pinned down or a low on moral guard unit retreating in a concentrated way - something like that) maybe even scale up to more realistic unit size (id kinda imagine it as recruiting a Battallion for your battle and then you can make it perfor in battallion or company formations), more realistic generals and general effects (small hq units on Batalion level that may need to interact to distribute information and can motivate their guys ore something like that - up to special charaakter generals and leaders that mide have special abilitys beeing with ). Also an update to siege battels would be nice -since most of the time it werent forts that were sieged but city defence lines - id would be so cool to have also fights within citys behind walls e.g.. And ofc some up to date graphics and improved animations. If i could wish for campaign upgrades to I would love to see more complexity and realism with the AI - be it a more complex political system and interactions, trade & ressource, sience & research, more realistic effects of the populations mood towards your leadership/government (for example impact on recruiting speed and less weir rebellions of huge sizes in conquered theretory), removal of limitation of campaign battles to 1 v 1 army or other.
Dunno if you ever watched Epic History TV youtube channel but they made a french marshal series where they present all the marshals and especially how to pronounce their names, might be useful for you and it's really interesting
"Soldiering it's a good life!" The soldiers were brave, because it's food and wage, either that either peasantry or working for pennies in the city, well but of course if you have luck to be born to least minimal family status. And God help you if you were unlucky enough to serve as a sailor in the 19th century... Hell in the wooden carcass.
no soldiers often soldiered for the pay but they were brave for their friends alongside them.. their loyalty to their mates has always been a soldier number one reason for their bravery.. their leader, country etc may help but as in many modern wars even if they don't believe in the cause they will risk their lives for the man standing next to them...
Also, I would so love to be apart of a civil war reenactment. Had an opportunity once during the john c Fremont days, but lacked the 2k at the time to get outfitted...
At Gettysburg if you think the Maine did heroic work. You should see what the first Minnesota did, it was 200vs 1500 and they held off the confederates for a few hours buying the Union time to reinforce the center, if the first Minnesota breaks. The Union loses the battle of Gettysburg.
I think you were starting to mention the Napoleonic Wars series by Epic History TV. Highly recommend! They spend a TON of time going through the tactics of the battles. It’s fantastic!
@pixelatedapollo it's not a bad idea. I think one way to pull that off would be a pre battle organizer where you view the map and move your pieces and assign generals Marshall wing commanders orders once the signal is given the ai performs the pre battle assignment. You can only sit and watch and hope for the best. Furthermore, units will have additional abilities that improve over drilling and fighting experience. Group 5 units of line infantry and it becomes one cohesive battalion capable of "holding the line" "guard the flanks" and the general will have all the toggle commands next to the formations tab. I think that would make the game flexible while at the same time reflecting the commander point of view rather than the classic god view. This would easily translate with campaign progression.
The french gave up too much ground. Ofc it could be hard to just hold the lines, but giving up so much ground willingly that you are basically surrounded is not a great idea. 24:36 was the last the left should have retreated. Nice battle.
i was the player on the left. Holding the left was impossible due to me needing to hold against 2 players, we hoped the right could be won and we could turn around, and even if we werent able to hold the right the city had much better defensive positions.
