- THIS GOLF BALL GOES HOW FAR? OLD BALL vs NEW BALL WITH PETER FINCH
There is currently a lot of rolling back the golf ball to the smaller size, to see that the pro's aren't hitting it as far. In this video Matt Fryer Golf and Peter Finch, play a match with a current 2020 regulation sized golf ball and also play with a 45 year old golf ball, that was the old regulation size to see what the difference will be.
What are your thought s on the size of the golf ball? Should the pro's be made to play with a smaller ball? Or should there be another way of controlling how the pro's play courses, put your opinion in the comment section!

Love this golf ball tbh 😂
Only 290 yards though Peter! I expect more from you hahahaha seriously though what a hit!!!
Restart quest for 350 with this ball
Fun watching two golf buddies golfing together. The comraderie doesn't get better.
Incase you didnt know... The Dunlop 65 was made to celebrate Henry Cotton's second round 65 in the 1934 Open Championship at Sandwich and it became the most popular ball of all.
I wonder if they can put 3 numbers on a golf ball for my constant scores with any ball.
My mom and I (78 & 51 yrs old respectively) took about 100 ancient old balls to a driving range a couple of weeks ago. I was hitting balls I know I'd never seen before (older than me) and I've been playing since 1975.
I hit several of the Dunlops (including some 65's) as well as a handful of Titleist (red lettering), Ben Hogan, "Spalding", etc.
There were a couple with the rubber bands hanging out that didn't fly worth a DAMN.
I have to say that, having JUST hit the exact same ball, the one(s) that Peter was using were in remarkable condition. I'm shocked that the he didn't literally smack the cover off the ball.
Great insight - crazy to see how much its changed
Matt, the ball rollback calls are not about the advantage vs other golfers. The rollback is about the advantage vs the course. Noticed that Pete made that point ~ 11:50 mark.
Too true, it's not about making Zach as long as Bryson (or Bryson as "short" as Zach) it's about bringing some amazing golf courses which distance has made obsolete playable again, and also bringing the creativity back into the game rather than just who can bomb and gauge best
Cracking vlog Matt; loved every minute
I am old enough to remember getting Dunlop 65s in the wrappers; felt great to open them up.
Cheers
As I recall when we switched from the British (Small) ball to American (Bigger) ball we were told that the American ball would not go as far but would be straighter. Since then the technical improvements have been vast with golf ball development.
Enjoy the fact that even though most of us have seen you guys play on this course and other courses as well, you give compliments and respect to the course(s) and give nice scenery shots in the rounds.
good video Matt, brings back some memories of the old balls
I'd love to see this test with both of you hitting the old and new ball on every shot. I think that would be even a cooler video! Thanks guys
I loved the Dunlop 65. But the size issue is actually that a 1.62 ball will go further than a 1.68 ball of the same make. And in the balata days the 1.68 would fly higher and be more affected by the wind. The material is the deciding factor. And of course the dimple design. To roll back the distance the ball would need to spin more with drivers and longer clubs. Personally I’d roll back the size of the driver head. You can’t take chances with the strike if the club is far less forgiving as in the persimmon age. Even reducing the maximum to a 400cc head might make a difference.
The smaller ball went further as several have said.
Making the ball lighter will reduce distance, more so for the longer hitters than the shorter hitters.
That was a gr8 video matt and what a lovely evening on a beautiful course oh and hi Pete
This is what I've been missing "Sneaky Matt"..........You and Pete duking it out! More please!
I've still got one of these in the wrapper, I've refused to open it, had it over 40 years from when I was about 7 years old!
Great to see you both on the course loved the recent videos with all 3 of you in again and Oh wow think every golf ball should be packaged like that instead of rolling out of a box would definitely try not to loose them more!!
Love the Wilson hat. I play the D7's and the cortex driver.
Well played guys enjoy you and Pete doing videos together. The wee wiffy balls seemed to not stop u guys enjoying yourselves.
I like the split set thing,
We found a load of old Dunlop 65s in my father in laws golf cupboard! Used them last time we played, great ball. Landed exactly the same distance with a PW but stopped better. Awesome ball 🤘🏻
I wouldn't mind golf going back to the smaller ball. To me it is sort of like the MLB in the US using wooden bats instead of aluminum. It will definitely change the game and I would be interested to see how it changed.
Great video guys......😃
And if I remember right the old balls were gr8 for cutting in half 🧶
Excellent video comparison, new ball v old ball. Remember giving a sleeve of Dunlop balls to my grandad in the 1960’s, loved the individual wrapping for each ball.
The sound quality is so sickk
Paul Hendrickson's comments after the Heros Open were quite eye opening. His driver carry is circa 270 and that distance on that course was directly where many of the hazards lay on at least 6 or 7 holes. On those same holes the fairways opened up for anyone with 300 yard drives, so those with longer drives not only had the advantage of distance, they also were penalised less for going offline. This is the issue with long drives.
Quality video!
"If you were wrapped in plastic for 45 years...." had me in stitches - I dread to think the smell of me in plastic after 45minutes lol
I would love to unwrap one of those on the course in front of a load of people 🤣🤣🤣
The “wrapped in plastic for 45 years” was referring to my brother-in-laws credit card.
I remember when those Dunlop’s came out- feeling old now
Love it! Now go to Golf Bidder and get a Wilson Staff Persimmon driver from 1975 and see how far it goes😁
blimey! i started paying golf with the smaller Dunlop 65 and it looks like i could finish playing golf with it too!
Dunlop 65 done really well another pukka video with you and Pete.
Hi Guys well done loved this - perhaps try this again with wooden headed driver? This took me back and I remember the delight of unwrapping a new ball. Couple of things you touched on interested me. Firstly the low flight. When playing with a wooden headed driver you would get a low rising flight. And secondly, with irons you would also get a lower less spinning flight. If you take a look at some old footage on Shell's Wonderful world of golf. You will see the guys easily getting out there between 250 and 300 yards with a wooden driver. What is noticeable is how much more wristy and less lofted up they appear to be when compared today's swing style this creating a lower drawing flight running a long way.
I loved the uniroyal ball with its hexagon pattern dimples for greater distance I would love that ball to make a comeback
loving the references to the penal nature of the tough rough at the ladies course..... naughty boys....
Course protraction is the better option for me however the pros could have equipment held back such as drivers woods and balls
In 1993 in Portland, Oregon at Heron Lakes golf club I hit a 400 yard drive on the tenth tee of the black course. Its a 565 yard par five. I made eagle by hitting a five iron to twelve feet and making the putt. The temperature was 40° on a January day and visibility was less than a hundred yards because it was foggy. I was wearing a down jacket a wool sweater and a a long sleeve Pendleton wool shirt to keep warm. I don't believe the problem is the ball. I think the extra length you see in professional players is from better strength training by pro golfers. By the way my average drive at that point in time was about 250 yards.
True story....the designer of the packaging for the 1975 Dunlop 65 went on to design the iconic Ferrero Rocher wrapping. (Probably)
Would love to be the fourth with you, Peter and Rick. You are all great!!
Im surprised Mr Finch didn't dim the light while Matt opened his 2. "Slow down, make it mean something to you" fun video guys, thank you.
It was Seve who said make the fairways more narrow, so I am not the only one to play from the rough
It is about protecting the courses, not make the field more even.
Don‘t know about the carry Mat, I carried one for eighteen and it was no problem at all.
given its age, the Dunlop's elastic core is probably quite degraded.
I found an old Spalding about 10 years ago and gave it a good wack with my 8i... did exactly what you would expect from an old elastic core. I split the cover (of course that was dried out) and the core exploded out of the gash like spaghetti
I got some Spalding hot spot golf balls from the 80's I found them in a golf bag I bought from a secondhand shop 4 of them still in their little packets
“Look at all those chickens!” 16:02
Are the weights of these balls the same? Just curious, great video guys👍
Loved the shot tracer on the long drives 👍
would like to see you do the same test with mid 1990s balata type ball along with using the smaller CC drivers and fairways of that era as it's probably the combination of the two that will show the great leaps forward the golf tech has made since trackman showed what was happening and thus allowed the industry to engineer equipment to get the more optimised distance, spin, launch rates etc.
Surprised they still have a nice sound to them lol
That was intriguing. I would definitely say shorter distance due to the core and due to the dimple pattern, much tougher to shape and a lower flight path.
"Golf the way it's meant to be played." Exactly.
Change ball for tour pros absolutely but for us mere club golfers, let's us keep the standard balls
Personally I would not change the ball but just make the course conditions very difficult. High rough, fast greens etc.
For me even if they are hitting the ball further old Links courses where the plenty for off line shots is significant means that they are forced to play more "sensible" shots to ensure safety! The newer longer courses are effectively designed around length and dont always have the natural hazards of the older shorter courses
Maybe on tournaments the pros use z specific tournament ball so all have the same. Use uour own clubs but a standard ball, like in football they use the same ball but different boots
Yea al stick to a new ball being a 12 handicap but give the pros a ball like this 💯👊🏻
Oh what a challenge Who will win!!!
I took up golf on Monday. I've got all the gear and no idea. I can't drive 100 yards with a new ball. Last thing I need is old balls coming back 😂😂
Don't mess with the ball.🔮
Should of made Pete wear golf outfits from 1965 😂😂😂😂 great video guys
Hi guys.., is there much difference in the weights of the Dunlop compared to the Pro v1..? Plus the Dunlop reminds me of a ferrero rocher in that wrapper..🤣🤣
I can’t believe Pete said the third hole was a tight driving hole, that fairway is wider than almost all holes I play, as a player Pete should be more confident than that
Just let the rough grow longer so there is a real penalty for the bombers to miss the fairway. This would not cost a dime to do. Right now, the long hitters can spray it into the rough and still get a wedge on the green.
Old course nearby closed down because it was too short and the membership dropped off. Spending £300 on a driver and players want to use them on every hole except the par 3,s
Just take away the ability for Pro's to use Tee pegs. A simple idea that could work and save courses and money
I found a Dunlop Bogey on my local course the other day. Looks similar to the 65. Anyone any idea if it’s a similar age? Can’t find anything on Google about them.
Petes hitting 4 iron off the tee and 6 into the green and then I heard he needs up and down for par I was like what thats a par 4!? on a ladies golf club its a really long one especially when its that tight
New ball must be better against the older ball
Ball tracer would have been from the tee.
I lost that on the right down the first, can I have it back..
Matt the Dragon slayer
The old, smaller balls weren't meant to be hit with today's clubs, but we're not returning to persimmon woods. It would be easier to simply return to the old ball size, but with today's materials.
When I was a kid and started playing (early 80’s) we had the 2 sizes of ball so would regularly play both. Worth remembering also that the core of the Dunlop is essentially a tiny rubber band ball, not the high tech cores of today!
Just to chime in on the distance thing and older golf courses becoming too short; i know it probably won't happen due to sponsorships but i'd like to see tournaments maybe have a set ball for everyone, like formula 1 has with tyres in that every F1 team has to use the same tyres as their competitors which are given to them by the tyre company (pirelli i think it is this year) so maybe the pga/usga can give titleist/taylormade/volvik/bridgestone or whoever a contract for a season for them to make the balls each player has to use that have to be shorter/heavier/smaller therefore making the field a bit more even in terms of ball availability. They could sell it to mere mortals for some extra cash but if there was a 'tour specific' ball that all tour players were forced to use then it might mean that tricky courses would still be tricky and you couldn't bomb a 400 yard drive to avoid any hazards. I know the golf ball manufacturers will complain that they want the revenue from tour wins/performance but they can still advertise their brand via the players hat/bag/clubs and also gone will be the days that players use one brand of golf ball but with another brand's logo (tiger playing a nike ball that wasn't a nike ball springs to mind)
I think the ball will be short than modern ball but not greatly, also think the spin will be less and won’t stop on green as quick
why would you measure ball in inches!!! Enjoyed the vid.
Why is Petes thumb hanging out 🧐 lol
I think we can all agree Peter is a bit of a saucy minx
Agreed
Wouldn't a smaller ball just make the sweet spot feel bigger making the game easier if they reduce the ball size they'll have to reduce the clubs back as well
good point, but I don't think equipment manufacturers would appreciate that...
read up on PING vs USGA in the early 90s...
I think u will see 20 yard shorter.
hola la verdad muy bueno video lo disfrute bastante deseo el siguiente éxito me voy les dejo besitos muchas gracias
Let the Pros play a specific ball and let us bomb away.
I've played golf since I was a kid. I have 32 eagles and 0 aces. I haven't been on a par 5 in 2 in 15 years. If they put a thin golf ball cover on an old whamo superball I'd play it.
I feel like the ball should be uniform for all pro golfers playing tournament golf - no different than baseball, football, soccer, hockey and basketball. The ball should be a uniform common denominator that every player must have in common.
Am I the only one that saw Pete miss his tap in on the first? So if it’s not the ball tech then it must be the club tech, or could it just possibly be the progression in golf athlete?
Look at Riviera it's and old course and they don't shoot lights out on it. Fryer was that a Shiels chip on the 2nd.😂😂😂
Big hitters won't be penalised with an older ball. Only the every day golfer
When you watch pro golf now, almost every second shot is a wedge. It gets boring very quickly, depower the balls core and make them have to hit 5,6 and 7 irons again.
I want to buy this ball.
I've got 2 boxes of 12 Dunlop 65's with all the wrappers still on if you're interested.

Great video. You are not really giving a fair trial because the smaller ball always travelled further than the larger American ball and was more controllable in the wind. Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus used to favour the smaller ball in the British Open - apparently for these reasons. I think after 1974 there was no choice allowed. The new ball technology probably makes amends for the size difference but ultimately being larger it will struggle Hence probably no difference overall
Love how Matt tries to dramatize the ball difference and Pete's like nahhh
I learned my golf from my grandfather, who spent most of his life playing with the small ball. He, and his books from the 70s, like David Ledbetter and Ben Hogan's Power Golf, were convinced the smaller ball went further. The big "American" ball was supposed to give a bit more control and rolled better on the lusher US fairways.
“It goes too straight!” What an amazing problem to have
hm...makes me think....
my handicap: born in the wrong era
Sorry mate, but there was no actual comparison against a new ball at the end...
Leave the dollar bills in the wrapper.
Instead of the powers that be trying to changed everything in our game, why don't the courses just grow the rough more for PGA events and the courses could even look at there courses and plan to place bunkers or the like in strategic position as to deter the pros from playing a certain shot. If there is a bunker/hazard where they would be landing there ball then they would either have to lay up with a 3 wood or risk taking it on. Having the bunker/hazard there would not interfere with the everyday golfer as we simple don't hit it that far off the tee
Im sorry, who are these people complaining their golf balls are going too far??
Just make the courses the pros play on less forgiving. Narrow fairways and more rough
we need to protect the classic courses, i don't like to watch pros on par 5's hitting driver then wedge to a green when back in years gone by it would be driver, fairway wood or long iron, wedge then putt. Now day's course management is becoming obsolete to the modern player, they just bomb it out there and clear the bunkers and doglegs designed to protect the course from low scores against par of the course.
If they’re concerned about players hitting it too far so courses aren’t played “how they’re supposed to”, make the tee shot tougher. Provide more trees that tighten the window or make the fairway narrower so playing a long iron is the better choice
It's not the size of the ball. It's what's inside.
Yeah , that's what she said.
I think the ball should not be rolled back. It’s actually enjoyable to see players hit way under par. Think about those of us duffers trying to hit in the 90s with a ball that doesn’t go as far. Stick with the new. Keeps more people interested.
