2013 Optima with the standard 2.4 liter. The fill plug is located on this model year on the top of the transaxle, towards the firewall. Fairly easy access using also a 24mm socket and long extension bar. I also drained just a tick under 4 quarts so 4 went back in. Amsoil Signature Series Fuel Efficient fluid. Only 15k on the car, so the fluid was still in decent shape. When it hits 30k, we'll repeat the process. Thanks for posting the video.
this is great as your vid shows exact SIMILAR features to my brother's Hyundai Sonata Hybrid 2011. Little is RUclipsD on it, so referencing via this KIA is a boon. Thanks.
if you open the drain while the engine is running it'll spit fluid out. if you just drain and measure what you remove then refill it with the same amount there shouldnt be an issue.
Correction not needed to change again because it has no torque converter. I'm also afraid to change mine because of that fact, but will check the level. Great video
I have a 2019 plug-in optima and read from some article the same that the hybrids dont have a torque converter because the electric motor replaces that, is this really true? Why are you afraid to do the drain? Shouldn't it be even better because you get all the fluid out with a single drain
Thank you for a great video. One question I am about to do this on a 2013 Kia Optima Hybrid... once you swap out the transmission from another car.. do you have to do anything with the ECU any sort of reseting or reprograming or will it just work? Thank you.
My car is currently at about 33,000 miles and considering to get AT fluid changed, despite the owner's manual not having any recommendations of changing it. The transmission is "sealed" and they guarantee lifetime fluid, but no fluid can last a life time. My question to you is, how did you know to use valvoline synthetic automatic transmission fluid? The manual doesn't mention anything about which AT fluid to use since they "seal" it?
Hey I have a optima hybrid too but it's 2011 and it's not really similar to what is inside your hood. Anyways I'll just check it on my own. But my question is. When you tighten up the 24mm plastic volt underneath, did you use a torque ratchet to make it tight as required?
the 24mm drain bolt is metal. it wasn't too tight when I drained it so I just snugged it up when I retightened it. iirc the torque rating is around 20ft lbs.
there's no way really to flush a transmission without hurting internal components.... best way is to do a drain and fill. usually 2 will do it all some people do 3 times just to make sure
+honhon05 is it preferable to do it by your self or take it to the dealer to do it cos I have a warranty on my car and they might gonna void it if something happened to my transmission. well the real question is is it going to break that easily.
Hi there, Just a question do you think change the trans oil a good idea as Kia dealership says life tine and some people agree with them, my car is a 2012 hybrid
Im currently at 47,000 and do long road trips every month or so.... I have to cross over the I-5 grapevine here in California which is very steep and in summer time car goes thru a lot of heat, weather is over the 100F. Most of the time you see cars overheated pulled over to the side. I do oil changes more frequently than what is recommended but I haven’t touch transmission.... should I change the fluid?
I have a 2012 optima hybrid with 160,000 miles. The transmission just started to slip slightly in 2nd and 3rd gear at 155,000 miles and caused the car to go into limb mode now. Do you believe replacing the fluid in the sealed transmission will help get it back on the road? Kia dealer says this fluid should NOT ever need to be replaced. After watching your video I believe they are wrong as usual 😞. Thanks
I have the same problem! It revs randomly and doesn’t accelerate at ~20-30 mph. I found this only happens when change from electric to gas though, once it’s in gas only I can accelerate fine. Did you ever resolve the issue?
@@andrewdsotomayor no sold the car to a mechanic who had to replace the transmission. It was to risky and expensive for me to continue with this car. He also had to replace the hybrid battery. My advice would be to bail. I bought 2 $1500 Chevy HHR’s and while they are not sexy I’m not stressed anymore.
@@charlesyates9541 Too bad, here at home we have the same problem and my father doesn't want to sell the car, it has 161k miles, I tell him to sell it because we don't know what it could be and it happens to us that it accelerates, but even with the gas engine on It speeds up, my question is where or how I can sell it like this.
honhon05 yea I called them yesterday and they didn't even have any in stock. I just did a drain and fill yesterday and will do another one next week. Car manufactures are making it harder and harder to do shit on your own.
So my transmission slipped and left like it got pushed into neutral..then it would slam into gear.... so i thought my transmission went out.. l limped it home while it slipped whenever I went upto speed......... to today I thought I should check the fluid level and followed your tutorial..... I went to find the fill plug were you looked around with a mirror...... I disconnected a harness that appeared to go to the battery pack...so I put everything back together..I went to start it up and lights were flashing said something about the brake and it said the key was not detected and wont start or have power..... Any ideas?
I was changing the Tran fluid on a 2013 Sonata Hybrid, and this video saved my ass! Thanks so much!!!

you are welcome
Every 15k lol. What a waste of oil. Mine has the original at 150 km or 95 miles
My 24mm is to big I have a sonata hybrid. Do you think 23mm will work

Which fluid did u use

Straight to the point. No time wasted bullshitting about useless irrelevant topics. Very much appreciated, thank you
Tks very helpfull video
You have to check the atf level WITH the engine RUNNING Idling after you cycle the shifter to all positions for 5-10 sec.
if you open the drain while the engine is running it'll spit fluid out. if you just drain and measure what you remove then refill it with the same amount there shouldnt be an issue.

Shit! T40 stripped my Allen bolt and its circular! The hell do I do now?
Check it with the transmission at 140 degrees F with the engine running. Top off until there is a thin stream pouring from the plastic check plug.
i use a squeeze bottle and tubing..squirt trans fluid into the overflow..forget taking off air box
Thank you I was going to ask if filling through the overflow was possible.

How often does the transmission fluid need to be changed in a Kia optima hybrid (2015)?
Depending on conditions I’d say at 20k 30k or 40k… depending how you feel
Did you find black metal mud clinging on the drain plug? ho many miles where on old oil?.
can you do a video on how to change a 2013 kia optima hybrid low beam headlight. i’m a new car owner and don’t know anything about cars.
I no longer have it so I can’t help you there
My car has 192,000 miles on it. Im afraid to change it now. Scared it will start slipping.
Hi there, is there a filter needed to be changed in transmission.
Thanks
Yes

Jun 11 the back of the valvoline bottle says it meets the Kia / Hyundai transmission standard
honhon05 That is great! Thank you so much for your help!
you're welcome
They say 60k miles on harsh conditions, I changed at 60k it was black and burned with smell. I recommend doing it at 40k or even 35.
yes in deed many people here in jordan use valvoline and they said that its the best oil, even lastes longer than the original kia. good job man

Do you have the dct transmition?? I have the niro I wonder if both cars havethe same transmition
MrNext2000 no it was just a standard automatic
Hi there,
Just a question do you think change the trans oil a good idea as Kia dealership says life tine and some people agree with them, my car is a 2012 hybrid
to me nothing is truly lifetime... and just to cycle in 3 quarts every so often i think is a good idea to keep fresh and clean fluid in the trans
Lifetime would be 100,000 miles
Went to dealership with sonata.. they wanted to change the trans fluid. Nothing's lifetime
I wonder if there is such a thing as a transmission filter if you are aware of?
There is

change the fluid with Valvoline and add lucas
Definitely do a drain and fill. Dont let the dealership do a flush.
