CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Ray (Tom Cruise) sees birds landing on a tripod and realizes the shield is down, and he tells a soldier so that the counterattack can begin.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
An ordinary man has to protect his children against alien invaders in this science fiction thriller, freely adapted from the classic story by H.G. Wells. Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) is a dockworker living in New Jersey, divorced from his first wife Mary Ann (Miranda Otto) and estranged from his two children Rachel and Robbie (Dakota Fanning and Justin Chatwin), of whom he has custody on weekends. On one such visitation, looking after the kids becomes a little more difficult when, after a series of strange lighting storms hit his neighborhood, Ray discovers that a fleet of death-ray robotic spaceships have emerged nearby, part of the first wave of an all-out alien invasion of the Earth. Transporting his children from New York to Boston in an attempt to find safety at Mary Ann's parents' house, Ray must learn to become the protector and provider he never was in marriage. I love how the commander took the first opportunity he had to take down one of the tripods and immediately mobilized his men to open fire. It must've been a great morale booster for his men, seeing that without their shields, the tripods could be felled with ordinary munitions relatively easily.

Always loved how they portrayed the military in this one. Clearly fighting a losing battle - but also bravely doing their goddam jobs like professionals. Too many movies portray the military as incompetent useless fools. I liked that as soon as that commander figured out they could have an advantage and neutralize a threat he acted immediately. Proved he actually deserves to be commander. It's so immersion-killing when there are NO representations of this in disaster movies when it is actually their jobs.

Yeah I love the immersion when the military is actually competent but simply outnumbered or outgunned, but they do their jobs to the very end anyway.

The CGI on this movie is Top Tier.
The Tripod looks way too real in almost all the scene. It's almost hard to tell that it's CGI.
And the detail of the Tripod's horn being heavily distorted as a sign that it was severely malfunctioning was also great.

That distorted horn sounds amazing. The bass in it is just... L O V E L Y .
More than just that. Compare the tripod in this scene to the beginning of the movie. That thing was steady, solid, powerful, immovable. Ready for anything. This one? Somethings clearly wrong with it. It’s off balance the entire time. Stumbling. Taking precious time to start blasting the soldiers once they line up with the javelin, and of course the horn. All of that, and the shield being down means one of two things, or both: the tripod was failing, or the aliens were beginning to show strong signs of the various illnesses that earth had to offer them.
Incredible bits of detail there.
@@antonradke5943 my favorite little detail here is when the tripod’s heat rays fail as it turns to look at the soldiers. Normally the crescent-shaped beam emitters are held in a stable and vertically upright position and shine bright blue just before they fire, but here you can notice them shining and blinking and going dark again whilst the tripod can’t even hold them in place correctly. It’s just the fact that they bothered with such tiny little details throughout the whole film that start adding up

I've always felt sorry for those guys you see rolling over the car at 2:01 they survived the entire invasion just to be crushed by a dead tripod in the last few minutes of the film...

That girl is an amazing actor. Probably never seen such a natural and realistic representation of a child reacting to traumatic events.
Apparently a lot of people hated her character because they thought she was super annoying, but that's literally EXACTLY how a child would act in these situations. They're basically helpless
@@lauvasquez8030 I mean, yes, you're right, but at the same time, in a movie about aliens invading the earth and the possible destruction of the human race, a kid acting like a kid is pretty low on my list of things I want the movie to focus on. Which is why her character was so hated.
War of the worlds was always meant to show realistic events. No heroic moments, or encouraging speeches.

Imagine if He was wrong about those shields and only birds could get through. Those soilders would be so annoyed.
They'd be vaporized before they get annoyed.
It was demonstrated in the post-basement scene (Rachel's abduction) that the shields can be bypassed by slow-moving objects such as humans on foot. So Ray's bird thing was a non-starter; he and the soldiers just got lucky that his false logic happened to coincide with a real tech problem, but they certainly were not identifying the correct evidence for it.
It's a fluke, basically.
(And flukes are tiny parasitic creatures wot cause sickness in bigger animals too, so there's another movie thematic link which still doesn't mean Ray had drawn the correct conclusion by the correct logic path).
Disappointing version of a story that will *never* be told authentically.

@Andrew Givens So the logic is the same as with Dune's shields. Makes sense, if a shield is impenetrable, you'll asphyxiate.
@@KrillLiberator shields allowing slow objects through them happens in Independence Day too: there's a scene in which David (Jeff Goldblum) places a Coke can on the captured alien craft with his bare hand, and just then one of the characters tries to shoot that can, which is then protected by the shield. However, if that were the case it would be easy to release balloons with C4's attached to them so they stick to the alien vehicles and then BOOM!!
Fun fact: The squad leader who was yelled at by cruise was an actual war veteran. my dad worked with him.

I really like that they introduced the shield again (like in the 1953 movie). The reason why they included shields is pretty obvious: when the book was written, there were no airplanes nor missiles. You would need a good ass canyon in order to take that shit down. If the invasion as described in the book happened today, the aliens wouldn't last a week.

They Aliens always knew what they're dealing with before Invading. Each time period has a version to match Earth's weapons. Only constant is they never accounted for the invisible threat.
Actually, the book was completely unrealistic. They had some damn good artillery in the 1890s, when the book was set. If the aliens had no force-fields they could have blasted them to pieces. H.G.Wells was a non-military middle-class intellectual who had NO idea about military technology. Almost everything he imagined in his science-fiction books was unrealistic. George Orwell did a very good take-down of him.
What I love about this scene is how the birds are almost calling out to the humans to take action. As If the two species we’re working together to save their world.

I just realized rewatching this movie that during the Ferry sequence and after one of the Tripods are standing over the hills after the birds fly towards them, the birds never land on it and only circle above it because of the shield.

Well, as McKay pointed out in Stargate Atlantis, shields are for emergency use only. You use them when you're expecting to take fire, which the aliens had been for several days from fighters making harassment attacks and small units occasionally chucking rockets at them. By this point, they were likely out of power as it was, and here comes *another* small unit chucking rockets....

Its cool that thr script writers know what they are talking about in this scene, that wasnt bs. You can see both javelin and carl gustav manpads being used to bring down the tripods. And also the javelin has a top attack mode usually used against tanks, hence what he said. Pretty cool stuff
I think he says "its gonna be a tough kill". RUclips CC matches up with that too. None of the javelins use top attack mode in this scene, all direct attack.

@@Krosstic Actually they can. These were firing in direct-fire mode, which is quite useful if the tank you're wanting to kill is under a bridge for example. It's also the default mode for attacking helicopters.

The tripods were coated in atomized human flesh and blood. They just wanted a bite.
I love this little change that when the shields are off, the Tripos are easy prey. This invasion is actually pretty damn rudimentary and far too ''rough'' from a strategy POV, the martians are just rushing B with over reliance on their shields. They have no air support, no infantry, no recon, no artillery, not even an HQ or something to fall back. They were straight up thinking the shields would be enough to conquer the planet.
The reason most every modern take on War of the Worlds since the 1953 movie is because the producer actually talked to military reps who read the book, who told him that Earths military would have no trouble handling an invasion with nukes and modern weaponry. Hence, adding the shields.
@@dylanmckenzie8566 Yeah, as crude as our weapons might be physics and chemistry are mean SoBs, we literally have to invision the impossible (heat rays and energy shields) in order to set up a fantastical foe with which to face.
Though I feel that dding the shields meant we missed the sense in the book where humanity fights back only for the martians to adapt (black smoke launchers would have been terrifying).

The crew probably realized their shields were dropped and that they were too sick to maneuver the tripod through all the buildings away from the increasingly swarming soldiers. I think the horn blast was a desperate call for help to any tripods still in the area that could fight. Tripods are downright fragile without shields and I think that the crew was acutely aware how dangerously vulnerable they were at that point.

@@JakvsMetalheads999 They're not vulnerable though, This one got hit with a ton of Javelins and it looked like the armor took it pretty well. even after it crashes through the building it's mostly intact. I think it went down because it was sick and being hit consecutive times threw it off balance. Of course more Javelins would kill it eventually, but it's still quite tanky seemingly

anyone else notice that at 1:56 there's about 5 perfectly safe people who come running from of screen at the left just to run in the way of the falling tripod and all but one get crushed. one even tries to jump and roll over a car to get crushed under it and the tripod
This is something which has annoyed me ever since I first saw the movie way back in 2005. Innocent civilians are killed, and for what reason? The tripod is obviously dysfunctional and no longer represents a threat, so why bring it down in the first place?
ken smit Hostile aliens with near impenetrable machines invade earth and kill a large percentage of the human race and the military remnants encounter one that's vulnerable. Sure it's swaying around and appears wounded, but it still represents a major threat.

Funny how everyone thinks the soldiers killed the aliens... but if you read the book or stayed for the final five minutes. The narrator clearly states that the aliens were already dead because of Earths bacteria. Reason why because there is no bacteria on Mars (or wherever they're from in Spielberg's movie) so thinking about it the Martians inside that tripod were probably already dead before they even hit the ground. And seeing where the rockets hit, either bad editing or they didn't even leave scratch. All they really did is hep knock it over not kill it.

Yes, it's actually a really clever idea and I applaud Wells for coming up with such a good idea. Germs have plagued us for over thousands years, but throughout those years human beings were able to develop an immune system. Along with medicine and what not, but the martians never been to Earth. They never dealt with our diseases or even the common cold. So assuming when they arrived they ate and drank. And Bam! All of them were infected and slowly over time they died.
The Tripod Has Armor yes but it can only take so much.... A Theory is the sheilds can only take so much also.

No it wasn't the air that infected them. In the book the Martians fed off the nutrients in our blood and also used it as fertilizer for the red weed.

Kevin Stroup-Very true, I still remember how much the tripod attacks in this movie scared me when I saw this movie in the movie theatre with my family as a teenager, they were that huge & frightening to look at. Plus the noise they made shook the whole room it was so loud.

Yeah but the problem is that while it's true that an alien species would have no immunity to terrestrial microbes, it would also be true that terrestrial microbes (and certainly terrestrial viruses) would be completely unadapted to alien biology. Maybe bacteria could infect them, but certainly not terrestrial viruses like the Cold.
