A mix of Elton John and Willie Nelson in that voice which works so well for this version. The choir is spot on in the harmonies and background vocals. Loved it.....
I was getting ready to slam this for the sheer audacity of daring to attempt a cover of this tune-on the face of it, technically very simple, but the vocals NOT very simple-and they did a masterful version. The singer is not very Elton-John like but the key is that he's wisely *not trying to be.* He's tackling it the way HE sings, not attempting to mimic Elton. And it's spot on with the backing vocals-I wish I had a complete gospel choir to summon whenever I needed some backing vocals for one of my tunes! Great job, you should try to do the entire album this way
Even Elton doesn't sing it like Elton does. That's sorta his whole thing; in his book he talks a lot about how music should be spontaneous and personal. That each person should sing how they want/feel. I play a lot of Elton covers and it's nice to have that kind of 'permission' from the artist to do it my way. This dude here does it his way and it's, as Elton would say (I suspect) "fantastic".
