Amazing VINTAGE FIND In Hawaii Auction | Gretsch G6131 JET FIREBIRD

- Mark Rivett recently bought a beautiful, early - mid 60s Gretsch G6131, more commonly known as the JET FIREBIRD. In this episode one we take a close look at the guitar which has suffered from being in a hot humid environment for many years. In fact, the guitar has been sitting in the (original) case since 1992. These guitars are prized and loved by many players and collectors, none more so than the late, great Malcolm Young from ACDC who single-handedly put this particular Gretsch workhorse on the map as a heavy rockin' rhythm machine.

Gretsch will always have a place in my heart.
They still make great guitars, wonderful value for money.
They do. I have two made in Japan 'posh' ones (a single cutaway Vintage Select Jet Firebird and a Billy-Bo) and three Electromatics (a black Rat Rod, an orange 5422TG, and a vintage white 5210T-P90), and I love playing 'em all.
Green filtertrons, interesting to see if it still works when plugged in......Hawaiian atmosphere is brutal on metal.
I live on Oahu and agreed... the Hawaiian humidity can be a hardware killer. I recently found an old Les Paul here and the gold hardware was in remarkably good shape despite the salty humid air. This hardware looks pretty great for a 60's axe stored in the 808!
amazing what you find in Hawaii Im in Hilo,, guy on my job told me he had a Les Paul said it was gold with some green was his Dads but he didn't play ,, told him to bring it in ill check it out for him possibly buy it ,, yeah was a 57 gold top PAFs nickle hardware 100% original dark back ( Black ) to boot, turned out his Dad got it from his Grand Dad ,, yes i told him he had a real treasure even help him authenticate it
I have played my Gretsch Black Falcon (Dynasonics) on every gig since 2004. People love it.
Seriously, over 6000 views and not 1 mention of Malcolm Young? This is how his famous Gretsch started life. He added a 3rd (middle) pickup then removed both it and the neck pickup, the red skin began to flake so he scraped the rest off down to the woods natural finish, he took off the burns vibrato for a badass bridge until the early 90s when the burns was added back on. Check out the history of his guitar here:

Yep, that's the Malcolm axe.
Malcolm!!!
Interesting...can't say I have ever seen or heard of a Gretch Jet Firebird guitar...thanks for sharing.
This exact model was Malcolm Young's primary guitar, both on stage and studio, through the decades since the beginning. Early on he stripped off the red finish, and then did numerous mods to it.
Sweet find. Looking forward to the rest of the vids
Very nice Gretsch. Can't wait to see part two.
Good find!
Awesome find congratulations
Beautiful.
Cool fiddle
That is awesome Mark!
Thanks Mark. ⚓️
The green and "binding rot" is caused by the glue and binding material reacting then affecting the binding and causing the gold to green.
I believe Gretsch people refer to it as the glue gassing off.
It's worse when they are left in a case.
Mine has a decal under the cavity cover with the serial number.
Also have a 1963 6128 has the same decal and both have the scratched in serial number on the face of the plates.
That's history and i love to see it getting a new life.
Just got my first Gretsch, a Streamliner, traded a Strat I wasn't getting along with for it.
very cool!
Very interesting.
Nice!
Cool
Got an astro jet with the burns trem , quite an industrial bit of hardware that seems to need oil now and then
Wow, you called him out by name (John T.), now the pressure is on him to perform.
You live on Kauai? I live on Kauai. Crazy coincidence.
Been on Kauai since 71 I bet that axe belonged to a local musician maybe a performer
Bet it belonged to a Gretsch player.
I think a 5 string is just not in the cards for me, personally... well. Maybe with a baritone Uke IR?
Research review condition accordingly ask owners of alike Gretch guitars and sell it to me for pennies cause u got good hair and only I said it nobody else me bro, you see that we’re practically family bro good hair .
Also I think norms is closed due to sand herpes from some damn dirty bum , I think it was slash or maybe Manson . 😁
