Star Wars: The Acolyte is Generic Fan Fiction

  • Two episodes in and it seems the Star Wars: The Acolyte is another weak entry from Kathleen Kennedy into Star Wars. Uninspired and generic, Lesyle Headland demonstrates why Disney should not be spending 180 million dollars on self-confessed fan fiction. The Acolyte is a procedural cop drama spending way too much money to look like Star Wars.

    The acolyte is the worst attempt at making a Star Wars show. Painful to watch and see how far Star Wars has fallen.

    The acolyte was very honest about what it intended to be and its no surprise that making niche fan fiction is not resonating with a lot of people.

      Yea absolutely true. A complete waste. I hear that an episode will be just flashbacks so maybe they will get more use from them. Regardless too good of an actor to be wasted.

      @@holdmydualshock Yea, they definitely use her in flashbacks, but it's still a monumental waste. I don't get it, they could've built up some tension for a few episodes, introduced some stakes, get people emotionally attached to her, and then kill her. Seems like such an obviously dumb decision. And even the way they killed her was super lame; she just looks like a weak and/or incompetent jedi master. Really bizarre decisions.

      @holdmydualshock  Месяц назад

      Yeah seems like the intent is clear. Add as much moral ambiguity to reframe what we know about the force and the Jedi. Headland recently said the Jedi are going to take some L's thinking that that was why people are not vibing with the show. The Star Wars prequels essentially a Greek tragedy, fans are very aware of the Jedi blind spots and how that leads to their destruction.

    Excellent, thoughtful, and perceptive analysis, especially your points about The Acolyte's misunderstanding of the moral duality of the Force and the Jedi/Sith. As you pointed out, the prequels did show that the Jedi were in decline and failed to discern the threat from the Sith; however, The Acolyte portrays the Jedi a century before the prequels in a state that seems more degraded than the prequels, and even worse, shows them as evil and thus effectively aligned with the Dark Side. This is surely the basis for Lucas' recent criticisms of Disney SW.

    • @holdmydualshock

      Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and comment! I agree, this is probably what Lucas was criticizing. This show so far demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of the force and how the light and dark side work through users.

    • @ian-flanagan
      @ian-flanagan Месяц назад +1

      Easiest way is just be closer to the mic (and turn down the gain to match). That reduces “room tone” in relation to your voice. Maybe a more directional mic, pointed at you, will also pick up less room tone.
      After that, I’m no expert, but it’s large flat walls that reflect sound, so “break it up” with objects if possible, or move to a room that has more objects, or cover the wall with echo absorbers if that’s viable

    I didn't hate it, but it was terrible overall imo.
    I love Master Sol thus far, his expressions and actions are endearing. Other than that there's nothing compelling or interesting.
    For the most part it feels like actors on a set, not people in a world. Like someone invited all their friends to play in Star Wars instead of looked for talent.
    Story telling and logic is pretty bad:
    -Open fire in space?
    -Twins have the same unique haircut having not seen each other for years
    -Prison ships with minimal security
    -Surviving an uncontrolled crash from space
    -Dust cloud escape from Jedi (please)
    -...the worst line "Attack me with all of your strength"
    While none of these are big deals on their own, lots of little things add up to make a whole.
    Also not interested in more demonizing of the Jedi, everyone has flaws but this looks to make them outright evil. (Captain America - Hail Hydra 2.0)
    At least the characters are original and not replacing or rewriting to push whatever non-secret agenda is being pushed.
    Hope it gets better...think I prefer Obi-won and Boba over it so far.

      @holdmydualshock  Месяц назад +1

      Great points. I agree, it is not good. I am not indignant or pretending like I am shocked or outraged. Like you said it's just a bunch of weak points culminating in a poor show so far.
      The "Attack Me with All Your Strength" sounded like a poor anime dub.
      I expect we will see more demonizing of the Jedi and agree, it seems the show will depict those 4 at least as outright evil.
      Hopefully, it won't be tied to a larger conspiracy but that is my suspicion.
      The show feels to me like a story about dirty cops.
      I also hope it gets better although it seems like the intent of the show is clear.
      Thanks for the awesome breakdown.
      Btw did you get the feeling that they forgot that you chart a course through hyperspace?

    Just like the real ACAB movement, these people behind the show lack basic human empathy and logic to not contradict their own message within the first 5 minutes of the show.

      @topherbec7578 How is stoicism the theme of recent Star Wars characters? I would argue that the Jedi embody stoicism; The foundation of Stoic ethics is that good lies in the state of the soul itself, in wisdom and self-control.

      Very good point and most of the tension in the prequels revolves around how that philosophy is difficult for Anakin to live due to his attachments. I always liked that in the prequels love leads Anakin to stray from the path while in the OT it is love that allows Luke to be an exemplar Jedi.

    Very bad analysis. Poor knowledge of Star Wars and no substance. The High Republic initiative is something that has been going on for quite some time now and the Acolyte is just one more step in the grand scheme of things. Of course they are going to depict Jedi as "not so good", it's the purpose of the show! No news there! It's the why, the how, the implication, the depth of the corruption that is the mystery. Also, from the Sith's point of view, the Jedi are bad and that's what we are exploring. The first line of the Sith code is : "peace is a lie, there is only passion". That's what we've seen in the second episode and that's why this show is awesome, so far...Plenty of opportunities to make it better, or ruin it still to come though. But, so far, they nailed it. Can't wait to see the next episode.

      “It’s deliberate” isn’t a defense against criticism. Sith perspective might have been interesting after a hypothetical ST with classic, conventional, heroic Jedi. That’s not the timeline we’re in, and the Acolyte is satisfying a demand from very few fans.
      I wouldn’t even praise/criticise the Acolyte itself because, like everything else, it’s been screwed over by poor, or seemingly non-existent, universe planning

    • @999darklord999

      @@ian-flanagan True, but criticism with no ground or substance shouldn't be either. Seems like a podcast just to bait clicks. This show respects all the basic steps of storytelling : in media res, present protagonist, establish plot then go through the motion. We have two turning points in two episodes, which is fine. Certain parts are left for later, which is ok too. Discovery of this universe should come as we go, not given right at the beginning. You can blame the execution, cause it's always debatable.
