The first time I looked at the videos going all around the chateau, I knew that rear door in the dining room was originally a dumbwaiter that served the kitchen in the basement. That was a completely standard floor plan of houses like this all over Europe for well over fifty years.

First, Happy Mother's Day Carole from Canada. What a great video seeing one of the past owners visit you. It was fun to hear all about what rooms were used for what and what those racks were for in the kitchen. So much history was found out and loved those pictures. They must go up somewhere in the chateau. Thank you for sharing....so much fun for all of you!!

What a treasure of photos, and super nice people. I guess you had some of your questioned answered but it appears that even with having a staff of people running the chateau, the bathroom conditions were lacking and we aren’t talking about the 1800’s! I can’t understand the French toilet and bath/sink area being in two different places. I guess just my need for extreme cleanliness!!! Fun video and loved the young woman trying to find English words. xx
That was lovely. How wonderful to meet the family who lived there. I’m glad they answered a few questions you had about the château. The wine went down really well🥂

They may never recover from the ribald teasing that you and Adrian gave them over the biffies in closets! 😂 So funny! Drip marks! A duck pond and pheasants- how wonderful. I’m so glad they were able to enlighten you about the shop to sell the milk, and all the other stuff that just wasn’t very apparent to our modern eyes. Straight out of the horse’s mouth- can’t do better than that. Wonderful episode today, Carole and Adrian. Today was Mother’s Day in Canada, so I’ll wish you a very Happy one, Carole. ❤️

hi Carol, Beth and Adrian! 😃 it's Mother's Day in the US and I'm taking mine out for Italian, I don't think I'll be back in time for the premiere chat, but will def watch after everyone else's today. 🥰
This was fascinating. We certainly enjoyed seeing and hearing from a member of the family who were the original chateau owners. Sometimes it is hard for me to understand how so many of these families ultimately let go of their family homes. But, there were a number of large factors that came together at the same time- the world wars and the resulting loss of wealth of so many of the European families, as well as smaller numbers of family members and staff to take care of the buildings. And, if you didn't have the determination and willingness to put in a fraction of the work of Adrian and Carole, then the decline would continue. Except for one of the photos, most of the photos seem to be from before this gentleman would have been born. I get the impression that by the time this man was growing up in this building, it was long past the time of its glory days. By that time, they were likely having to be resourceful in finding ways to bring in basic income in the form of making their farm a producer of dairy and meat products that they could sell to the surrounding villages. It would have been a distant memory to when his grandparents and great-grandparents first lived here. It would be nice to know, though, how it became totally deserted to where it had so seriously declined like so many other chateaus.
I find it poignantly sad when I hear a young man dying in a war just a month, a few weeks, or even a few days before the end of a war. My goodness, that must have pierced the hearts of your Great-Grandparents and your Grandfather who was his brother. Your grandparents must have been such good Christian people to open their home to refugees during such difficult times during WWII also. God bless! @@SergeDUBOISLOUVEAU

For those that need an interpreter: The previous owner his name is Serge - "Surge" - Carole has difficulty pronouncing his name): "1918, the Armistice - a mass was celebrated on the grounds of the chateau. Regarding the entrance that was originally a cupboard. In fact, it held a type of dumbwaiter. The servants and the cooks were downstairs in the kitchen and would send the dishes up in the dumbwaiter to the dining room for service by the butler. Previous owner: The domestic staff (butler, housekeeper, servants, housemaid, assistant chef) - they were underneath, in the kitchen and they slept above the family bedrooms, on the 2nd floor. So... the cooking was done in the basement kitchen. Young lass: so there was a cook, a housemaid, a housekeeper, a governess, a servant, a housemaid (one who swept and Hoovered the floors). Carole: A "femme de ménage"? Lass: How you say, a house cleaner, (cleaning woman that doe the vacuuming and washing the floors), plus a gardener for the garden. Also there was lots of cookers for the cook (meaning the head cook and his/her staff - assistant chef, prep cook, etc) Adrian: What was the rack for? Serge: Winchester! (Rifles) for hunting. Carole: What did you shoot? Owner:The grandparents hunted wild boars (not pigs). They also hunted wild birds - pheasants. Serge: advised the vat that Adrian calls a "lavoir" - is a type of deep sink where clothing were washed in the old days. Animal games: Serge describe hens.....we break the eggs, then we eat them. But during the wars, there were people that would steal eggs (to survive or to sell to get supplies for their families). In regards to the toilet in the cupboard.... the reason the bidet was outside the toilet section was because there wasn't enough room next to the toilet for one, so they had to put it in the separate room. The rest of the video there is enough English from Adrian that we can all understand. Hope this helps every one. Take care.
This was very interesting, must say a couple of times I was literally thinking the previous owner was about to pop Carol, oh my. There was definitely a need for an interpreter, maybe that was the problem but the word koo koo was correct, lol. See you in the next video.
What was the concrete block in the basement for???? The only thing I thought i understood was it was to clean fish???!!! What did they say about the beautiful renovations you all have done thus far?

I think it’s so great to see the salon being used like this again!!!
Thank you for your kind comments 😊
What a wonderful visit.
Merci beaucoup 😊
That picture of Armistice Day is worth a million bucks (quid).
See you soon. Serge du Boislouveau
See you soon ! Where do you come from ?@@kindlydude
Wonderful information you discovered and such fun too
For those that need an interpreter:
The previous owner his name is Serge - "Surge" - Carole has difficulty pronouncing his name): "1918, the Armistice - a mass was celebrated on the grounds of the chateau.
Also there was lots of cookers for the cook (meaning the head cook and his/her staff - assistant chef, prep cook, etc)
Adrian: What was the rack for?
Take care.
Thank you 😊
Serge
That was enormous fun! Great to learn from previous owners! It is such a beautiful property!
We agree!
This was very interesting, must say a couple of times I was literally thinking the previous owner was about to pop Carol, oh my. There was definitely a need for an interpreter, maybe that was the problem but the word koo koo was correct, lol. See you in the next video.
what a lovely fun family great company
What was the concrete block in the basement for???? The only thing I thought i understood was it was to clean fish???!!!
What did they say about the beautiful renovations you all have done thus far?
The block was for cleaning clothes. They loved the work and have been following the channel for some time
Serge

Hi Carole and Adrian, how exciting to learn some of the history of your Chateau. I loved all the pictures they had as well. I am happy you had some of your questions answered. Did they know what the arch in the basement was, I didn't hear if they did or not. Great video. Love from N.Y.
They had no idea! Before their time

Serge
