I like both designs. They're distinct and reflect the area they released in. The NA version had the advantage of the two concave buttons, a design choice I really like. I don't like the purple buttons though, the colored ones would have still been the better choice. Also, I love the labels on the NA games. Here, in Europe, the cartridges are rounded though, so labels are not really a possibility. Same goes for Japanese cartridges...

I think the Super Nintendo makes sense in a sense this console was in fact designed to support a Disc Drive (DD) such as the one Famicom had except this one was going to be a CD drive and Sony actually wanted to further expand this console to 32-bit 3D capabilities early on... Reason why there is an "All-In-One" model similar to the Twin Famicom however this one was called the PLAYSTATION. The Playstation was a prototype of All-in-one SNES Super Disc with the option of System Cartridge to further enhance it to 32-bit level. The functional prototypes of System Cartridge were destroyed and the only one left was the Super Disc bios. So yeah like they said... The SNES and SFC were going to get upgrade modules, the Super Disc and possibly a SC for them as well.

purple is a girls color thats why i never liked the design. nintendo shouldve just gave ntsc regions the same design as the pal region.

imo red wouldve been a better choice, since the nes already had red accents on it

As a european I was first not a fan of the NA cartridges but after all the years I have to admit that the stickers on the top are much better and it's a shame that the japanese/european cartridges didn't have that feature. We also never got the dust protecting covers for the contacts below. Overall I think the NA design was very clever and it's better for collecting. Pal versions suck anyway. My only gripe is the NA Controller. I never got used to the different X and Y buttons. In Europe and Japan all buttons felt the same which I find better and I prefer the colors.

Jokes on Nintendo! My SNES drank some tequila with me years ago... It still works too, despite some temporary squish when inverting a cartridge.

Yeah, I always thought it was a great looking serious design. Especially with a cartridge inserted. They only look like hell if they start to turn yellow. It's interesting how divisive this one is.
The original Playstation was another fine looking console to my eye and it struck me as being partially inspired by the north american snes.

I’ve always thought the US design was ugly but it’s grown on me over the years and I now really like the aesthetic. I still prefer the PAL/SFC though 😀

Wow, I never knew anybody thought that about the NA SNES design. You learn something new every day! It's actually my favorite console design of all-time, and that's coming from someone born a decade after released, so I don't have any bias there. I always found the EU/JP design to be bland and a little unappealing. The NA SNES controller is also my favorite controller design ever made too. But then again, I'm one of the few who finds red, blue, yellow and green all on one controller to be ugly. It's interesting to see how different perspectives can be.

I personally prefer the overall look of the super famicom console because of how sleek and well put together it looks, but I think I like the super Nintendo controller better with the muted purple. Another thing I just realized the Donkey Kong Country 3 banana bird cave sections would have been so much easier for other regions because they could rely on colors and not just the buttons.

As a kid I was baffled why NOA ditched the RGBY color scheme and went with violet and lavender. As an adult, I actually prefer and love the purple scheme. The RGBY controllers look kinda kiddy, looking back.

Some things just aren't worth complaining about. Living in Canada, obviously the NA one is the norm. I also have a Super Famicom and to me that's the one that looks weird. Doesn't really matter what it looks like as long as it works.

I like the NA SNES design. It is really 90's. It's cool. But I definitely prefer the JP / EU design. It's just more sleek and timeless, I think.

    • @RetroBirdGaming

Both designs look nice and same with the controller, but I prefer the design of the SFC/PAL version, especially the controller. It's very ironic since I'm from North America, not PAL region or Japan.

omg you answered a question I was wondering for a long time. My snes is pretty yellowed *except* the area around the cartridge port. I was wondering why that is and it seems like it was a manufacturing thing?
Also, in terms of the look of the consoles, I can't say I'm a fan of the nes or snes. I much prefer the famicom variants of both. The original famicom looks downright futuristic. And the super famicom looks comfy as well. The original nes is ugly by comparison (especially when yellowed like mine is). The snes is *okayish* and I suppose most of that is due to growing up with it. But the square look is honestly kinda bad, especially when you compare it to the model 2 genesis which is super sleek even by today's standards. Sega did a great job designing their consoles as I like the genesis, saturn, and dreamcast. all of them look great. For nintendo, I'm just glad we started getting the same molds as japan.

    • @RetroBirdGaming
      @RetroBirdGaming  3 года назад

Basically, different parts of your Super Nintendo may have been manufactured separately. So, certain parts may be the plastic that is more susceptible to turning yellow than other parts.
