We lived in Germany, fifteen years ago!, and they recycled all plastic. We took to the store and put through a shred machine. We had seventeen -17- different recycling compartments, from foils to glass (3 colors) to four different plastic areas. This is why many European countries won't take our products. Not because they don't want the products, but because there is no way to recycle the packaging. There is NO effort on the part of the sellers/manufacturers. It's all about the money. The numbers in a triangle don't mean anything. We are being duped.

How do we, as consumers, convince suppliers that wrapping their products in plastic is not desirable in the first place? Industry even has us convinced that we NEED plastic bags to store our garbage before we can put it in the garbage can to be taken away to the land file. Grocery stores have moved to a heavier plastic bag that is supposedly reusable as well as recyclable and for which you have to pay a deposit. Yet, in this day of having your groceries delivered, those bags don’t get reused or recycled. I would be glad to donate them to an organization, but since I have my groceries delivered because I don’t drive, I would have to pay a second time to have someone pick them up. And if they are not going to be recycled or reused, I am being scammed a second time.

    • @SaberToothBicycle

Where I live they deliver groceries in plastic crates. They come to the door, hand you a crate, wait for you to unload it in your kitchen, and you hand the crate back to the driver. You're stuck with the packaging included in your order, but there are no shopping bags at all.

@@SaberToothBicycle Now THAT is a solution! I had actual meals delivered to me in insulated cloth bags. If I left the used bags out, they would pick them up with the next delivery and I wouldn’t have to pay for them. That company stopped doing that altogether though. May I ask what state you are in and the grocery store if it doesn’t compromise you?

How do you stop them? One fix would be to stop using plastic and switch to corn, potato, hemp, to make 'plastic' from decomposable material. The tech is readily available as several manufacturers started to produce as testing model from corn and potatoes. It worked. They stopped doing it I don't know why. I believe in recycling. I pulled wagons with bottles and newspaper as a kid to earn money. Yes I am old! Make the deposit for a glass bottle a minimum of 15 cents. Aluminum same, tin same, Some things from back then still make sense to me. Separating glass, cans at the time newspaper and cardboard were also recycled heavily then. Schools did fundraising paper drives and bottle drives regularly as did scouts and little league.

_By 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans. It’s an environmental crisis that’s been in the making for nearly 70 years. Plastic pollution is now considered one of the largest environmental threats facing humans and animals globally.
In “The Plastic Problem: PBS NewsHour Presents”, Amna Nawaz and her PBS NewsHour colleagues look at this now ubiquitous material and how it’s impacting the world, why it’s become so prevalent, what’s being done to mitigate its use, and what potential alternatives or solutions are out there. This hour-long program travels from Boston to Seattle, Costa Rica to Easter Island to bring the global scale of the problem to light._

I long ago started using cloth grocery bags which are kept in the trunk of my car inside the plastic boxes(given from my grocery store) that I have used for at least 15 years. I make sure to go to my city's website for recycling rules. I have from the beginning taken my pop bottles & milk bottles recycled. I pay for that when I purchase those items and I want my money back. The USA will never get rid of single use plastic because of the oil companies.

Senator, there is a technology out, called thermal depolymerization, which will efficiently and cleanly recycled plastic. I’ve been trying to get municipal waste systems to install this technology for two decades.
I am asking that your office look into it and look into installing this technology. It is very simple to build. Basically it is a two chamber pressure cooker that well cook down under pressure. Anything you put in it to its constituent parts. So if you put a bunch of plastic into it, top off the first chamber with water, it will cook that down to oil that can be reused to make more plastic items or to be used in some other way. The technology releases only steam and uses very little energy, and it’s so clean, but it does not even require an EPA report to build. You can build it any size from something small to a large facility. I have been working with the ocean, cleanup project, which is currently harvesting tons of plastic out of the ocean, to ask that they install these systems onto their boats and D polymer as I the plastic back and oil. This organization is very interested in doing this and this asked me to find a partner, so I am looking for a partner anywhere I can. Therefore I’m reaching out to you here, but I will follow up with you in mail at your office since you were looking into this issue. The nice thing about cleaning up the oceans in this way is that it’s basically just plastic that’s floating around out there, but we can utilize this technology in Lambeth systems, especially in recycling centers. I hope someone in your staff actually sees this comment and looks into it. You can learn more about the technology and Wikipedia, or I read an article about it on the good news net work. :) by the way, this technology is already hideous in Philadelphia I believe, and it is in use at butterball turkeys, turkey farming to process all those feathers on someone into something that can be used in fertilizer.
