- September 28 | Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) speaks at an Environment and Public Works Committee hearing considering existing and proposed policies to improve the domestic collection of single-use beverage containers, aka “bottle bills.”
You are masterful at telling the American people, with stark honesty, what they need to hear in order to push for a more perfect union. Go!
*I LOVE Senator Whitehouse! We need more like him!*
Love this guy! Senator whitehouse for President!
Thank you for working on plastic recycling it’s such a serious issue for the planet
Thank you, Sen Whitehouse. ❤️👍✨
I've been telling people this for yrs! So, where is it all going??? Thank Sen. Whitehouse
Thank you Senator Whitehouse for your hard work!
We must add this cost/reward to plastics across the country. I've been recycling everything I can but am in dismay that plastics aren't being recycled.
It's sad that we can't get companies to do the right thing because it's the right thing... Thank you for your work, Senator Sheldon. 👏👏
We all are being charged extrafor recycle but no one can tell me where its going
@@garyayers9200, what are you talking about? How are we all being charged for recycling? I'm not asking antagonistically, but genuinely.
I get charged every month a fee i live in southern minnesota i dont know where your from we get charged its not the money its the idea we worked hard recycling to find out its not really being recycled its a scam
@@garyayers9200, I understand now what you're referring to. How frustrating!! I live in rural KS & I have to make trips to a town about 12 miles away to turn in my recycling. I don't mind the work of doing it, as I understand you don't have an issue with the fee for yours (I'm assuming its part of your garbage pickup fee?). However, to learn its not being done after all is kinda heart-breaking. Ppl wanting to do the right thing for our planet & it's all some kind of ruse, ultimately angers me. 🤷♀️🤦♀️😡
Companies will not do the right thing. We HAVE to make them do the right thing.
Thank You Senator! This is truly a HUGE CONCERN OF MINE!!! Please consider about running for President of these United States 🇺🇸 I think you would be an incredible leader. You’re very articulate, charismatic, intelligent and level headed!!! Thank you again for dealing with these imperative issues! ❤🌟🇺🇸❤️🌟🇺🇸❤️🌟🇺🇸❤️🌟🇺🇸❤️🌟🇺🇸❤️🌟🇺🇸
Thank You Senator Whitehouse. This does need to be addressed. Yes that has been a question, in our state, for a while. It doesnt even save on our bill for trash pick up. LOL @ 2% by accident- very true. We do need to encourage using recycled plastic more often. Thank the gentleman for the useful information, it gave a much better understanding of how the reward on return would benefit the states. 🎉🇺🇸💙
Stay strong senator! We are sick of this court, and billionaires!
Yes to deposit returns! I'm in Maryland, and we need that!
Bottle depots
work for Canada in many ways.❤
Thank you Senator Sheldon Whitehouse for addressing the plastics pollution crisis. Our earth is turning into one big trash bin. I'm tbrukked that you're talking about this. It is a chore to clean and rinse and separate recycles now knowing that they're NOT being recycled. It's very discouraging but I'm a creature of habit and I still recycle. I am more aware of what I'm buying at the store now that I know about the recycling debacle. ♻️♻️♻️♻️♻️♻️♻️🌏🌏🌏🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊
I had the feeling they were just using a different truck to take my recycling to the landfill.
Thank you for trying to address this horrible plastic problem senator whitehouse!
Since china quit buying our recycling a few years ago everything has gotten even worse environmentally.
Thank you, Senator Whitehouse. I believe with everything sold from water bottles to washing machiines, the cost of disposal or rec6cling needs to be paid at point of sale and a refund upon delivery back to the recover center such as happens now with aluminum cans.
We lived in Germany, fifteen years ago!, and they recycled all plastic. We took to the store and put through a shred machine. We had seventeen -17- different recycling compartments, from foils to glass (3 colors) to four different plastic areas. This is why many European countries won't take our products. Not because they don't want the products, but because there is no way to recycle the packaging. There is NO effort on the part of the sellers/manufacturers. It's all about the money. The numbers in a triangle don't mean anything. We are being duped.
I too feel like plastic recycling in the US is a con game. 'Planet earth R.I.P. We could have saved it but we were too cheap'. K. Vonnegut
Whitehouse always the best. And see @KeithWF
Our daily routine of recycling has been made for us to help with the reuse of plastics & therefore help our Mother earth...after all these years, to find out it is all 'REDUNDANCY'!
There is nothing wrong with a charge/return system. I remember the 1970's when everybody would save their glass bottles (Coke for example) and return them to the shop in order to get money for them (like beer bottles and cans today).
I totally agree. Even up to a dollar each for all plastics. Moreover, for plastic wraps and ties buy back by the pound.
Well done, senator.
We need to clone Senator Whitehouse for all 50 states !
We The People need you in The Whitehouse and Yes I like recycling...Oval needs recycled. Thank you Sheldon Sir.
Michigan has done this for years. Use the blue print from Michigan. It works.
How do we, as consumers, convince suppliers that wrapping their products in plastic is not desirable in the first place? Industry even has us convinced that we NEED plastic bags to store our garbage before we can put it in the garbage can to be taken away to the land file. Grocery stores have moved to a heavier plastic bag that is supposedly reusable as well as recyclable and for which you have to pay a deposit. Yet, in this day of having your groceries delivered, those bags don’t get reused or recycled. I would be glad to donate them to an organization, but since I have my groceries delivered because I don’t drive, I would have to pay a second time to have someone pick them up. And if they are not going to be recycled or reused, I am being scammed a second time.
Where I live they deliver groceries in plastic crates. They come to the door, hand you a crate, wait for you to unload it in your kitchen, and you hand the crate back to the driver. You're stuck with the packaging included in your order, but there are no shopping bags at all.
@@SaberToothBicycle Now THAT is a solution! I had actual meals delivered to me in insulated cloth bags. If I left the used bags out, they would pick them up with the next delivery and I wouldn’t have to pay for them. That company stopped doing that altogether though. May I ask what state you are in and the grocery store if it doesn’t compromise you?
I recycle more than I throw out in the garbage. I re-recycle some of the plastic recycle items. I've been horrified at what gets dumped into our oceans and landfills and it's no wonder that our planet is so unhealthy. It breaks my heart to see. Then to find out that our recycled materials aren't being recycled! That's maddening! Manufacturers should bear some responsibility for the products they produce for consumers.🌍🌎🌏♻️♻️♻️♻️♻️♻️♻️♻️
A real human being. A politician speaking the truth. Can someone make a short of this? it would go viral on the internet.
The answer is not recycling but a change of consciousness.
My bigest issue is Big Oil first. Plastic second. I have been recycling since I was 12, and saw that iconic commercial about an Indian Brave, a Human Being, crying 1 tear, looking at GARBAGE. Everywhere. All my work, all those years, I am 60 now, for nothing?😮😢 Yep. I donate to Ocean Cleanup. But what to do wih it? Boyden Slat is working it out. With recyclers. I hope Mr. Whitehouse is successful. I hope Mr. Slat is successful. HUGE FRIGGIN PROBLEM. Maybe stop making more plastic? That would help. Good grief.
I have to stop buying stuff in plastic. Wish me luck. ❤❤ Jeannie in Lakeport California
Thank you Senator. Are you the last honest person that remains in the senate? Please keep up your good work and investigation into the Supreme Court corruption.
I am so relieved that our best watchdog in Washington has turned his gaze to the obscenities of the plastics industry. Over packaging is so extreme that merely attempting to open a pack of batteries results in personal injury.
:) Well done Senator. Note: This month's Scientific American Magazine has an article regarding plastics recycling that you may find interesting. :)
Great hearing, kudos!
Doing real work that matters to the American people. Senator Whithouse, you are golden!
How do you stop them? One fix would be to stop using plastic and switch to corn, potato, hemp, to make 'plastic' from decomposable material. The tech is readily available as several manufacturers started to produce as testing model from corn and potatoes. It worked. They stopped doing it I don't know why. I believe in recycling. I pulled wagons with bottles and newspaper as a kid to earn money. Yes I am old! Make the deposit for a glass bottle a minimum of 15 cents. Aluminum same, tin same, Some things from back then still make sense to me. Separating glass, cans at the time newspaper and cardboard were also recycled heavily then. Schools did fundraising paper drives and bottle drives regularly as did scouts and little league.
Your suggestion is really the way to go. Somehow the use of plastic needs to be phased out for alternative packaging. Glass, aluminum and paper recycling works better because the original materials are clearly recyclable.
RUN FOR PRESIDENT ❤❤❤
Hell yes! Glad to hear it! Hopefully more people wake up and start doing something about this.
I'm thankful for Sen Whitehouse & his dedication to this issue. PBS Newshour aired a 1hr documentary 3yrs ago: The Plastics Problem:
_By 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans. It’s an environmental crisis that’s been in the making for nearly 70 years. Plastic pollution is now considered one of the largest environmental threats facing humans and animals globally.
In “The Plastic Problem: PBS NewsHour Presents”, Amna Nawaz and her PBS NewsHour colleagues look at this now ubiquitous material and how it’s impacting the world, why it’s become so prevalent, what’s being done to mitigate its use, and what potential alternatives or solutions are out there. This hour-long program travels from Boston to Seattle, Costa Rica to Easter Island to bring the global scale of the problem to light._
EUROPE DOES IT! In the past, before the disposable mindset became established, glass bottles were returnable.
Try to avoid plastic and it will further open your eyes to the excessive waste. Let your eyes scan across the iside of a walmart or target. Then realize every bit of that is going into the landfill one day.
Exactly! Incentives to change packaging in the first place is key. If we can wean ourselves off of petrochemicals for transportation, then we should be able to do this.
@SenatorWhitehouse Our recycling has always been a joke in my City in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin! The make rules to clean, and separate plastic parts. But we watch them ignore plastic separating!
You are a hero, sir.
This does not mean to stop recycling. It means you should ask why it is not being used again. Bottled water? Stop. I did. Filters do a lot better job than your water suppliers do, for sure...
Absolutely! Grocery store aisles packed with various brands of water 💦 are so depressing to me. What a needless hassle!
I live in new York. There is a 5 cent deposit on each water bottle or aluminum drink container some people actually walk the streets picking up and returning for deposit. This should be a national law.
There is so much plastic that isn't recyclable that concerns me. Why are the recyclables not being recycled?
Didn’t we used to send our plastic to China until they told us a few years ago not to send it anymore? Thank you, Senator for all you do.
China woke up; now who can we dump it on ?
Sadly it seems this is true. What I’ve been doing is just refusing to by those single use plastics, if any plastic at all.
And yet the companies refuse to accept any bottle or can that has too much of a crease in it even if clean. They are making it harder and harder to redeem. And where does the non-redeemed money go?
Cradle to grave costs must be built into initial price for any product. Of course that would require ACTUAL capitalism not the debauched system now undermining life as we have experienced it. In addition driving this change will produce many many many more new businesses. Provide employment for millions. Innovation and risk once the drivers of US growth now dirty words in corporate world. Have been since Reagan's reality show posing as a presidency premiered. Thanks for your persistent efforts to break through the willful self ignorance of 2023
This is another thing that Canada is ahead of the USA. Single use plastic has been banned. I long ago started using cloth grocery bags which are kept in the trunk of my car inside the plastic boxes(given from my grocery store) that I have used for at least 15 years. I make sure to go to my city's website for recycling rules. I have from the beginning taken my pop bottles & milk bottles recycled. I pay for that when I purchase those items and I want my money back. The USA will never get rid of single use plastic because of the oil companies.
91% of the plastic you put in the recycling bin goes into a landfill. Recycling is more expensive than making new plastic. Plastics companies are all about the bottom line.
We hope at least the recyclables are being placed in an area separate so they can be recycled in the future 🥺
Love him...
Thank you.
Ban any consumer product plastic that cannot be recycled.
That Is the solution…but the USA is about $-so we use another “solution”- the stall tactic…Don and the Teflon
🎉the way plastic is made it is cheeper for the petrochemical industry to NOT recycle.
I LOVE how these men say stuff like "I'm just busy trying to get dinner on the table" and "I roll the outside bin down to the street"... I mean, I'm on the side of the point they're making but let's be honest here; they're not serving dinner and rolling trash bins, they pay people for that. 🙂
Not Mr. Whitehouse. He cooks and cleans. That’s why we love the guy.
Throwing up your hands is not doing anything….answer for all plastic..not a band aid system…reinstate return bottle bills
I wish he would run for president
Being responsible isn’t profitable.
Our economic structure rewards doing the worst thing.
It's wishcycling ♻️
Senator, there is a technology out, called thermal depolymerization, which will efficiently and cleanly recycled plastic. I’ve been trying to get municipal waste systems to install this technology for two decades.
I am asking that your office look into it and look into installing this technology. It is very simple to build. Basically it is a two chamber pressure cooker that well cook down under pressure. Anything you put in it to its constituent parts. So if you put a bunch of plastic into it, top off the first chamber with water, it will cook that down to oil that can be reused to make more plastic items or to be used in some other way. The technology releases only steam and uses very little energy, and it’s so clean, but it does not even require an EPA report to build. You can build it any size from something small to a large facility. I have been working with the ocean, cleanup project, which is currently harvesting tons of plastic out of the ocean, to ask that they install these systems onto their boats and D polymer as I the plastic back and oil. This organization is very interested in doing this and this asked me to find a partner, so I am looking for a partner anywhere I can. Therefore I’m reaching out to you here, but I will follow up with you in mail at your office since you were looking into this issue. The nice thing about cleaning up the oceans in this way is that it’s basically just plastic that’s floating around out there, but we can utilize this technology in Lambeth systems, especially in recycling centers. I hope someone in your staff actually sees this comment and looks into it. You can learn more about the technology and Wikipedia, or I read an article about it on the good news net work. :) by the way, this technology is already hideous in Philadelphia I believe, and it is in use at butterball turkeys, turkey farming to process all those feathers on someone into something that can be used in fertilizer.
Thank you for the info, perhaps it’s past time to put filters on our tap water & use reusable water bottles
Recycling is a sales pitch.
Thank BP for their campaign to blame the public for environmental problems.
Discussion is when a oceanic revusion grossifed.
There were recycling 2015 then it stopped and everthing went back to the landfild .Washington and Oregon idaho have !!.. wrong post ..this was for senator whitehouse on recycling 🙂
Do we teach important of recycling in school system methodically, even with the waring if didn't do it.
What about the Chesapeake Bay???OMG AZ here
Why can't we change a companies fiduciary responsibility to the American people and not the stock holders? A companies fiduciary responsibility should be country first stock holders second. That would be a great law to pass.
Every state should do like MI pay for all plastic bottles item. Then they recycle ♻️ all if.
I am eco-crazy, and keep going though I know how disappointing it is to work to recycle for no results. Legislation needed.
My self where is the plastic going?
Can Americans get to a abliity to not buy more crap.
Everything design from the Oxford dictionary
As long as we have money in politics stuff so simple like this will never get fixed for sure when it’s not profitable enough year by year BUT buying a political party is.
MAKE IT A GOV. JOB.
87th as a Boomer Im so glad I statisticaly have only 20yrs left ...and no kids.... and live in a solid blue state - this country / world is screwed by GREED
So I'm hearing that the clean up of plastic will be the normal thing because it's CHEAPER than recycling. Big Oil rules apply. Well isn't that convenient for them. Perhaps Big Oil should be forced to pay for all the plastic waste removal programs 100% too. SMH
Non-biodegradable plastic, except for industrial and medical uses, needs to be phased out.
7:46 the homeless people thank you for the income stream. Cvs has now limited them to 25 items per day.
1:57 idk how you do it - you’re all over everything at once. While you’re at it though, I heard our food waste rotting under plastic at the dump is creating a lot of greenhouse gas….. we all need to start composting at home. Thanks for being awesome! Probably make a nice dent in the nyc rat problem too- someone put together a dog/rat hunting group.
From the beginning, the plastics industry co-opted the triangle indicator, by putting them on non-recyclable plastics. When recycling plants actually have a recycling market for a particular plastic, it is type 2 clear and color that is even considered for recycling. The rest is a scam
Plastic causes cancer, doesn’t it?
“The ones who cheat the most will always have an economic advantage”…are we talking Plastic Don or Teflon Don ?
i was under the impression that most if not all plastics can be recycled...once. they can be turned into a plastic bowl, say. then when the bowl's life is over, garbage it again becomes, and cannot be recycled....?
I'm glad to see something potentially constructive going on in our congress. That's not what the news media shows us most of the time. I hope that this is the majority of what they actually do.
What plastic recycle, our town got rid of all recycle places, because the homeless collected plastic and they wanted to get rid of the homeless, how crazy is that when every jug of spring water cost 10cents/60cents per six.we have 1recycling center in the county seat 23 miles away and we are a college town. How educational is that?
On good Americans side of life what the F.
Recycling just doesn't exist in the USA. At least in my part of the world which is Kentucky, USA.
OOOPS. I MEAN THRILLED ***
I do not like that discretion

I stopped recycling a very long time ago because, many years ago, I realized it was a scam; I am paying for recycling, which now is part of my mortgage, and have to pay for something that only enriches these companies.
