  • Born as Marie-José of Belgium in 1906, the young Princess would one day become Queen of Italy. Known as the May Queen she would only hold that position for 35 days. During the darkest days of the second World War Marie-José stepped up for her home country of Belgium and personally pleaded with Hitler for better treatment. She took matters into her own hand and almost single handedly tried to negotiate a peace treaty with the US before being banned away to an isolated village. Having lived nearly 60 years in exile, Italy’s last Queen died in 2001 at the age of 94. This is the fascinating life of Marie-José of Belgium.

I searched the last princess, not the last queen. I did not end the royalty in Italy.

It is pronounced MAH-REE YO-SEE. Not Marie HO-SAY. Also she is known as Marie Jose of Italy. Once she marries, a royal consort is known by the higher rank (Queen of Italy) not a Princess of Belgium.
It’s also the KEY-INN-EE-AL Palace. Please don’t be sloppy!

I'm sure it didn't help her marriage that her husband was gay. No wonder they separated.

😂 The modern concept of "gay" didn't exist then. If you mean her husband was homosexual, then who are you saying was the father of her 4 children?
The evidence suggests to me that he was bisexual, not homosexual (or "gay"). Bisexual men very often marry.
And whether her husband's adultery was with a male or with a female, it would have been equally good reason to separate, surely?

Her name is not pronounced in the Spanish tongue you use on her name but in French with a J and not a Ch as you say it!

You pronounce "José" in the Spanish way. That is incorrect. You should know better.

źosé I can't make my smartphone write the proper Symbol for the "j". Go to Google and look for "josé french pronunciation" and you will find the phonetic spelling and a spoken example.

The name is neither Belgian nor Italian. It is French, one of Belgium's official languages. The royal family of Italy wanted her to adopt the Italian Version, "Maria Giuseppina", but she refused.
