Bushmeat is a term that is used to often describe wild game meat in Africa. And while there some types of bushmeat that are not good or unsafe to eat - grasscutter - also known as a greater cane rat, is safe and one of the most popular types of bushmeat to eat in West Africa. It’s a delicacy!
So while we were driving on our way to Elmina, Ghana, along the side of the highway, we stopped at some hunters, and bought a grasscutter.
Later in the day, we met up with our host family, and we drove over to the Elmina fishing market. The market was amazing, bright and colorful, and energetic, with some unique fish and seafood available from the Atlantic. We bought some fish to go along with our grasscutter, and then we continued back to the house to start cooking.
First for lunch, Mama made us a dish called Eto, a mash up of yam and palm nut oil, topped with eggs. It was a little on the dry side for me, but it was an honor to have a chance to try that special Ghanaian dish.
For dinner we prepared the fish and grasscutter. The fish was made into Ghanaian groundnut or peanut soup, which is one of the best dishes I at in Ghana. The grasscutter was made into a bushmeat grasscutter light soup which included chilies, garlic, onions, ginger, and tomato.
Finally, for the main start of the meal Mama made omo tuo, Ghana style rice balls.
How does grasscutter taste? The greater cane rats run around the fields and eat grass, so unsurprisingly some parts kind of taste like grass. But they are a white meat, and have a similar look to chicken, but the meat is even sweeter. It was also surprisingly fall apart tender. I thought it was amazing!
Across West African food, grasscutter is a very popular meat, and a delicacy eaten on special occasions.

The food and surroundings look so like the Caribbean where I live..we also drink coconut and eat the meat the same way. Yam is a bit dry so we always eat it with some kind of gravy like stewed fish..even if it is mashed it dries off quickly as it cools.

That spoon chopped off from one angle of the green coconut, to scoop up the coconut flesh. We do that her too, the islands of PNG.
By the way, what does palm oil taste like in the yam? I confirmed from what I thought and from the search online that palm nuts come from the 'oil palm' plant. I really want to know how Ghanaians make red sauce from the palm nuts..Thanks.
Grater Cane Rat is called 'mumut' in Papua New Guinea.

People , why can't we just respect other people's culture. Westerners wants to westernize everything thinking everything should be done the way they know how it should be, meanwhile we are all different. The things I know, you don't know, and the things you know ,I don't know. For once in our lives give respect to people and their cultures. Whether it is a rat or a grass cutter cant we just respect the culture? And those of you preaching hygiene here , please keep it to yourself because everything the lady dip her hands in later came to contact with fire and boiled over killing whatever germs it is that you are talking about. The plastic she placed on top of the yam was to trap the vapor so it doesnt Escape, in other words, the vapor ends up cooking the yam together with the water she added. Use your common sense, if you feel you know too much keep it to yourself and respect other people's culture and not talk trash about them just like the way we will not come to your countries and talk trash about you or what you believe in. There are other countries that eats snake , crocodiles, Etc but that doesn't mean they are less of a people , you might not like what they do but it doesn't give you the right to judge them or Westenize everything they do trying to make it sound right to you, just respect them and their culture. You can choose not to eat what they eat but keep your opinions to yourself cuz the last time I checked it doesn't really matter what you think.

She loved the way you explained the taste of the food, the way you ate everything, the amount of Chilli you put on everything, and she even loved your family. She talked about Micah like he was her own grandson. She would ask me everyday if you posted a new video. She passed away on the 18th of June this year and I just want to say thank you for making amazing videos and allowing me and my Grandmother to enjoy them. I see people complaining of him eating a “rat”. Well let me tell you all something. I’m from Mexico and I have eat skunk soup, iguana soup, frogs, turtle and so many things that others can find disturbing or disgusting, and it’s nothing wrong with it. If the food is washed and cooked chances of getting a disease are less. People negatively commenting about eating a “rat” simply aren’t mind open. Not everyone has a way to eat cattle meat. Its survival and most important it is culture. By the way I’m from Michoacán, I hope Mark goes back to Mexico and visit all the prehispanic areas from around the lake of Pátzcuaro.
