    Great video. Doesn't come up enough. Especially the bit about banking being intuitive. One of the few advantages of advanced years - it gets in your bones - eventually :)

    All great advice. One thing I like to do whatever possible. Is to shorten the rebound angle with inside English. To make the ball to come off flatter. Makes the pocket play bigger. But you have to be able to play them with all Englishes. When I practice banks I hit the same banks every way possible. Fast, slow, inside spin, outside spin. High, low, and every combination. Draw and follow changes the banks a lot to

  • @akquicksilver
    @akquicksilver 2 года назад +2

    That intuitive thing is for real. I don't make every bank I shoot, but I know when I draw down on the shot and get that feeling (this is going in) thats intution and it is cool. The more banks I shoot, the more I get that feeling.

    Yay! Got it. For banks - Right hand English on cue ball transfers to left hand direction of object ball, and vice versa. Liked that long narrow down table bank with slight right on cue ball.
    No more tossing & turning about which ball goes where. Finally can sleep at night!

    Thanks for more great tips, you are natural when it comes to explaining things to guys like me. You also validate so many things I have thought myself but have been told were wrong. Like relying on banking systems and aiming systems for example. They may work for others, but I want to understand the physics of the cue ball so I don’t need to memorize a million things.

    Great points. Aiming systems are a good starting point, but it takes practice to get the speed and spin down for the particular shot, table, and conditions. I play in APA and whenever someone takes a time out to ask where to hit for a kick or a bank shot, you can show them exactly where you would hit the ball/rail but most of the time the player misses because they hit the cue ball too fast, too slow or with different spin then needed to pocket the ball. Lol, then they look at you as though you gave them the wrong information. Just like pocketing balls, the sooner you get rid of the "system" and get to the point of automatic aiming the better off you will be. That is not to say these systems aren't helpful, especially when first learning or for very difficult shots, you simply can't play this way for every shot. Thanks for your insight. Keep the videos coming!

    If I've understood, and correct me if I'm wrong: on a bank shot, the sidespin on CB can change the 'outbound' angle of OB twice (both in the same direction): first, CB spin throws OB into the direction of the spin, and second, the transferred spin on the OB further adds to that angle. One effect may be more subtle than the other, though.

    The one thing you forgot to mention is how the flatter the angle of rebound off a cusion--the more spin is imparted to the ball on rebound. That last shot taking the 8 across to the side pocket: most of that spin is from the rebound, not the cue ball throw.

    Once again, great lesson. I’m getting that after I spend time with natural shots (speed zero) and get say 8 of 10 of those, instead of (though I can’t help but try a few) going to English and transfer, I ought to try speed at least to see how much I can reduce the need to cut.
    It’s funny, your zero speed seems like my natural zero speed. Is zero speed then the same for all? Just have to get it in muscle memory? Once I find out how much I can affect the angle after the rail I can find out if I need to cut at all or not when it’s not a natural.
    You mention it also, but after watching many of your videos I got out to the pool hall and worked on drills, draw, banks, English, and shot some 8 ball keeping in mind the key ball, key ball minus one, etc. and fixing problems (frozen clusters, blocking balls) early. I had a fantastic day and ran a lot.
    Today I went out expecting to continue my newfound upgrade in skill. And I sucked. If it were this easy, we’d be close to your level after just a year. It doesn’t work that way. It was a little discouraging, but not much. I know it’s plateaus, and think it’s important to work through even when you feel like nothing is working. So I did more bank shot natural drills. Felt a little better when I saw improvement over time. For some reason I was nailing long straight shots even though good planning would mean I don’t have to make those. But when trying to improve, you have to be honest with yourself, and also take encouragement with small victories.
    I’m very glad to hear that the diamonds and angle math on one rail is better done just by practice. Love the idea of zero, zero plus and zero minus.

    This is first time I've seen you and I just subbed. Thanks for this video! I never have used banking systems. I just sort of "see" the spot to hit the object ball at and do fairly well at it. However when it comes to banking with english, I knew what you said was true, but wasn't positive just how much it effected the shot. Sometimes I couldn't tell at all when I'd try it. Now that you explained this "clearly" I will be more diligent in practicing banks with english. I also wonder about 2 rail banks bc first rail needs to be wider than off of second rail. Very hard to judge those 2 angles for me. Thanks again!

    Not saying I'm the best at banks, but I think developing that "feel" is the best way. Better than any "system".
    Then you're ready for all situations.
    It's pretty easy to visualize a bank going long or short. I like to visualize it banking slightly long, and then make the adjustment in my mind accordingly.

    • @FXBilliards
      @FXBilliards  Год назад +1

      I will be making a video soon that covers the subject, but in the meantime- smaller tips are less forgiving for shot making but will put more English on the ball. A wider tip puts less spin on the ball but it will not punish you as much if you’re stroke is off.

    I have to admit I use to miss alot of Simple Bank shots due to Un-Needed English . English will throw your Object ball Longer or Shorter than your pocket .
    So What I do is Slow my Breathing down before I bank that way it slows my back Stroke down . I make more bank shots with a 4 - 7 speed range on a Diamond table anyway ..

    How about some words (in that future video) on banks where there's a fairly large cut angle. The cut induced spin has dramatic effect on the angle of the object ball leaving the rail. And it's not obvious to me just what is going to happen.
    My best bank shot is the one I didn't take. But sometimes I have no other choice.

    I know it's off topic. But I think two of the greatest players to watch and copy are Dennis orcollo and Warren Kiamco. Dennis's stroke has the fewest moving parts of most pool players and he moves the cue around effortlessly. Warren plays some of the smartest position play. Warren is one of my favorite players to watch. Both player remove variables from pool to raise their run out game

    Brian, I'm a beginner and am having trouble applying side spin (high, middle or low) to the cue ball without missing the intended aiming line. In this video, when you apply side spin, it looks like you put your cue tip in the center of the cue ball and then apply the intended side spin on your last stroke (high, middle or low --- right or left). Am I seeing this correctly? In essence, are you using back-hand english on that last stroke through the cue ball? An instructional video on how you apply side spin would be very helpful. Thanks!

      Thanks for watching Dave. I do have some videos on the subject but shooting with english is more about getting in the reps to understand what the CB and OB are going to do. I recommend shooting a ton of them to watch and learn what the effect will be. Anyone who tells you to "aim here" or "aim there" with english, is giving you suspect advice. The stroke, amount of english, speed and even the tip on your cue can change the aim of the shot. Reps are the only way. Thanks again for watching and please subscribe.

    A mathematical formula is only as good as the table it’s played on check lol

    • @YayComity
      @YayComity Год назад

      The real formula is accurate but it's very long, contains advanced math, and includes factors for speed, english, coefficients of friction (age and cleanliness of balls, wear of cloth, humidity, chalk residue), coefficients of restitution for the rails, adjustments for how close to a pocket you hit a rail, and on and on. NASA stuff. You can't use it in a game. And even computer simulations are surprisingly inaccurate.
      When a system doesn't work, and angle-in doesn't equal angle-out, it's not because the table is flawed. It's because it's not a ray of light in a vacuum bouncing off a mirror.
      A quality table helps because it is more consistent for learning. But if you get good only on your own table, good luck in a pool hall or bar. Hard work and years of getting a feel are the only answer.
