Been happy doing upgrades on my Wal-Mart bike, a Mongoose Ledge 3.1 29". Upgraded the drive train, converted from a freewheel system to a cassette system, upgraded to hydraulic brakes, and I'm going to be upgrading the rear spring to the air shock he was using. The stock spring is just too stiff. I originally ordered the $49 DNM air shock for my bike, but after seeing this video, I went ahead and canceled my order and ordered the one he had.
I rather see a kid learn to do his own bike wrenching on a budget bike now than when he's an adult wrecking an $8000 bike and doing the walk of shame into his LBS and paying someone to fix his mistakes.
Danielb4life Im sorry you got so many negative comments for this. I think its cool that you made a video that showed us how the shock looked. That’s a big upgrade my man! Some people say to not spend money on this bike, but I would upgrade it slowly, instead of saving to buy a better one. I did this to my Walmart bike and I do not regret. Idk if in the States people buy used cheap bike parts, but here in Brazil they do. Every part I upgraded, I sold the “old” one on the web or in garage sales.

the air compressor will put a large volume of air in your air shock but may not reach the required pressure, also i think your shock still looks stiff maybe because there is too much air volume in the negative chamber. man what you need to do its borrow a shock pump off some one or buy one even better and setup your sag and rebound but first let all the air out of both negative and positive chamber. then do positive first then do negative then recheck positive after. your sag should be around 30 to 40 percent if its enduro kind of riding and 20 to 25 percent for bike park or dirt jumps.

I am impressed that the shock worked after putting an air compressor to it. I am sure by now you see your mistake and have figured out how to set sag and what not. Have fun
Jacob Kenyon the compressor didn’t actually inflate it, it had 150 psi from the factory, that was way to much for my weight, I saw that if you want to release a little bit of air, you can’t just do it like a tire. The pressure from the compressor and shock equalized, leaving about 110 psi in it.
Heard of a shock pump? Don't be cheap just pick one up, they are under 15 dollars! I bought one for my cane creek air shock and it works great. Don't use a air compressor again, good video!
Everybody is saying upgrade the fork, however I feel you should save up in the long term and buy a new drive train. That includes front and back casset, derailiers, and cranks. Plus hubs. Normally cheaper bikes come with crappy drivetrains, so you should upgrade it. Expensive yes but worth it. Expect you pay more than $500 ik big number but that's wyhat mountain bikers do
So, is this holding up after using the air compressor? Everyone sounds pessimistic but that wasn't that large of a compressor. A car battery compressor would be even lower air volume and someone you know probably has one. Also, have you found it to be much better than the spring shock?
fire7side Yeah, it’s been holding up perfectly fine for over a year, no air or oil leakage. I get why everyone was freaking out, but it can’t possibly be the first time anyone has ever tried that. It was definitely a much needed upgrade over that really cheap spring, it actually used up the travel opposed to not using any with that spring. I had used the bike for about 6 months after putting the air shock on, and it was a much comfier ride.
I never did do anything after the shock really. After seeing all of these comments, I realized that continuing to spend money on upgrades wasn’t too worth it. Spending that money on a higher level bike would be a smarter decision off the bat…
I would recommend forks bars stem and wheel upgrade. Its a nice entry level bike but if you buy new parts you are eventually gonna want to upgrade your frame and if you do try and make sure the new frame will go with your new parts. Good luck with your bike and hope to see some new content on your bike. Peace
Hey buddy, good stuff. Don't let rude people in comments about your bike get you down. We all start somewhere right? When I was your age I could not afford any bike, even an $80 Walmart bike. Now at 30 I have a Specialized Enduro Elite carbon frame. Its still middle line (4500) compared to the flagship 9000 S-Works enduros but still a badass bike. I say you should get a shorter stem absolute 100%! I went from a 60mm to a 30mm and it sits you back further allowing you to be more aggressive on downhill stuff. That stock stem looks like it's 100mm plus which is way too much. If you want I would send you the stock stem off my 2017 Specialized Enduro Elite, it's 60mm with 6 degree rise and prob just about right for your bike and it's geometry.
id buy a new fork, bars, stem and some 510 shoes if i had to keep the bike. Ultimately id buy a cheaper second hand bike that is maybe a few years old. bikes that were $3000 a few years ago are sold for as low as $800. bargain in my mind. but yeah a new fork would be a good idea and i personally ride with 510 free-rider canvas shoes and i would 100% recommend them they grip extremely well and are really good if you go trail riding often
I currently have a Cannondale Super V400 using an old 145mm eye-to-eye (ETE) rear spring shock Fox Vanilla X and apparently the EXA A5-RR1 shock has a 8mm (i think so) bolt size hence cannot be fitted onto the Super V frame which has a 6mm diameter hole/eyelets
1) Get a proper high pressure shock pump, compressor wont do the job necessary. 2) You cant rebuild theses cheap shocks, you replace. RS/Fox have rebuild kits, you pay more. 3) If the bladder is blown the shock will be bottomed out and not hold pressure. 4) Your 'Preload' shock travel should be no more than 1cm, this is what the blue washer is for, this will be the correct pressure for you and your bike weight.
I might consider buying this in a different size. But, I’m also looking at the RockShox Monarch RL. I know it will fit but it’s also dummy expensive. It depends on some timing and when I’m replacing my current rear suspension
anyone know how to take apart the dnm rear shock? I think my is due for some rebuild.

Replace only, no seal kits.

Hey I know I'm a little late to the party but I would have liked to have seen your future up grades with this bike.
I never did do anything after the shock really. After seeing all of these comments, I realized that continuing to spend money on upgrades wasn’t too worth it. Spending that money on a higher level bike would be a smarter decision off the bat…
Damn spring gets loud and squeeks when riding. I took off that damn spring off
I would recommend forks bars stem and wheel upgrade. Its a nice entry level bike but if you buy new parts you are eventually gonna want to upgrade your frame and if you do try and make sure the new frame will go with your new parts. Good luck with your bike and hope to see some new content on your bike. Peace
keep it up young man..! and small advice, use a shock pump next time.
If you want I would send you the stock stem off my 2017 Specialized Enduro Elite, it's 60mm with 6 degree rise and prob just about right for your bike and it's geometry.
you didnt dhow the dampning part as noticed that at the top a red wheel#? did you change that as it makes a huge difference
id buy a new fork, bars, stem and some 510 shoes if i had to keep the bike.
Your video was very knowledgeable thank you for the information!!
Real mountain bikers cringe alert... But I admit that we all started in crappy bikes tho...
Bon LMDC I started on a 97 iron horse rigid then I snapped the suspension fork I put on and got a 97 Santa Cruz heklar
Being am experienced mechanic myself i disliked several things he did in the process
I started with an Ibis mojo slr
But we didn’t put a 165mm shock in place of a cheap Walmart shock.
but now his is upgraded.
Nice bike bro
Rockshox yari fork
1-10 derailerer
Hydraulic disc set
Bars and stem
That could be a really decent bike oh and a new wheel set
Ryan Molyneaux 3 times more expensive than stock
I agree
and a new frame dont forget that bit too
Ryan Molyneaux yess
Ryan Molyneaux he cant fit yaris on there his headtube isnt tapered
Awesome video man!!!
Start of the video when he says today I’m really excited.he really looks it
Roberts Family stop lying
Good job kid!!
Do you need to change the rear shock linkage bolts?
Good job! young man!
Spring is still de best!
Good job mate
Great video buddy. I am thinking about getting the same shock so this was helpful.
Name of bike please?
Great job bro
I currently have a Cannondale Super V400 using an old 145mm eye-to-eye (ETE) rear spring shock Fox Vanilla X and apparently the EXA A5-RR1 shock has a 8mm (i think so) bolt size hence cannot be fitted onto the Super V frame which has a 6mm diameter hole/eyelets
Now my only question are you going to go mountain biking with it
Great 👍 👌 keep riding kid nice video
Awesome video, i enjoyed it 💪
Great Job !!!
Do you even ride enduro or downhill. If not why do you need full suspension bike
Upgrade to some cheap xfusion front sus forks and new stem and bars. After that get a new crankset with a 1x10 or 1x11 drivetrain.
So compared to the spring type shocks. Wich one you prefer?
(Dull voice)- Uhh yeah I am really excited. Like is that excite naaaaa
may i know at the time where u take out the shock and what happend if you sit on the bicycle that has no shock on
Well, if you were to sit on it, it would just compress and use up the full “travel” of the bike. Just don’t ride it without a shock
Good work man.... for me ill give you 5 stars
New bars, grips and stem 👍🏻
And don't forget to use grease to prevent seizing.
You should get a new Fork and a Dropper Seat post next.
Vize Kingzz he doesn’t need a dropper he isn’t doing any Xc he is fine with the fixed seat post he needs a new drivetrain
This cycle weight and price???
What bike is that i like it
I might consider buying this in a different size. But, I’m also looking at the RockShox Monarch RL. I know it will fit but it’s also dummy expensive. It depends on some timing and when I’m replacing my current rear suspension
As the new air shock and front fork bottom out over a curb
Why youn dont also change the front suspension, with idraulic suspensio
Please give me a link from where you bought you'r bike, cause i want to buy a same one.
Cool Video!
Your old one is so great, why’d you need a new one?
Your cycle weight????
